This is how I remove those old "C" clips:

Use a pair of standard slip joint pliers with a good grip at the tip of them. With one hand, slide the long shooter spring back. Now with the other hand use the pliers and grab that C clip tight and quickly yank it hard. It will come right off.

I don't generally reuse the original C clip. I replace it with a conventional 3/8" E ring.
