Playing competitively on a weekly basis (Pittsburgh Pinball League in PA, Tales Of The Tuesday Nights in WV) and in various tournaments throughout the year, I have always thought that I played better with my glasses on than I did when I was wearing my contacts. One reason I believe I think this is is that my contacts are monovision contacts...meaning my right eye is my "far" eye and my left eye is my "short" eye, as far as power of the lens goes. That is a far cry from my glasses, which are basically the same strengths in both eyes.

Just wanted to hear what you all that switch between contacts and glasses have to say about the issue...

I wear neither. Thread title sucks.

I never tried contacts, I only wear glasses. For some reason the idea of putting something directly on my eyeball horrifies me. However I did meet a player that had LASIK eye surgery and he swore it made him a slightly better player.

I usually wear contacts during the work week but sometimes just go with glasses on the weekends. Cannot say it makes any difference in my playing but the glasses have some sort of HD lenses in them and at times they can almost make me dizzy or give me motion sickness. I am at an age where glasses are somewhat convenient -- being nearsighted I just take them off and can see clearly for soldering/board work. I'd need readers/magnification to see close up if I kept the contacts in.

I wear glasses (don't have contacts) and have tried different things to see if it makes me a better player or not.

Glasses on or glasses off, drinking or not drinking, having only 5 beers instead of 6, wearing my ugly shirt or my favorite shirt, eating before or after the tournament, wearing underwear or going commando...none of it seemed to make any difference. I'm just mediocre at playing pinball and I've come to accept it.

I don't notice a difference in what I am wearing. I been wearing contacts for over 25 years and cannot imagine ever going back to glasses on a regular basis. If anything I'll get surgery next. I'll wear my glasses in the morning until I shower but that's it. My eyes are around -4.75 so cannot see anything more then a few feet away without them.

I don't wear correctives, but I am of such an advanced age that i suffer badly from presbyopia. If you don't have presbyopia now don't worry! You will.

So I consulted my eyewear specialist (Walgreens) and obtained +2.5 "cheaters" for reading, computers, working on games. But for the distance to the playfields, +2.0 is perfect. So i have a couple pairs of glasses just for playing.

Glasses over my glasses. 6 eyes FTW.

I wear the ol' 'coke bottle' type glasses. Tried different contacts over 40 years but they were too annoying, bothersome and problematic for me personally. How ever your eyes see things, your brain compensates and gets used to it... except very nearsighted lenses do make things seem a bit smaller and farther away than they actually are so that is a minus.

The only glasses I need when playing usually have Jack Daniels or beer in them.

Thank goodness my eyes still work like they should.

I was having some eye irritation recently and so was wearing my glasses rather than my contacts while playing a bit last week. I found no discernible difference in my pinball play, but it was something i have often wondered about before.
I dislike wearing glasses outside of the house, because of the more limited peripheral vision. When wearing glasses rather than contacts, i find my balance when cycling is off, i bump into doorframes more, knock things over more, I assume for lack of that extra peripheral clarity. But the area of the machine i am looking at when playing is squarely within my clear visual frame, so it doesn't really change anything, other than occasionally taking my hand off the flipper button to push them back up my nose!
My vision is pretty damn bad btw. While attempting to read paper books/magazines without my glasses or contacts on, i have gotten a papercut on my nose before because i was holding the book so close to my face!

Shouldn't this thread be in the "All Pinball" section rather than the "Generally-Off-Topic" section since it is regarding playing pinball?

I like to play with one contact in and a monocle in the other eye...I switch if its a game that reverses flippers...

If its Twilight Zone (Magnetic flippers) I put the blast shield down....

This is actually a real issue for me. I wore glasses for 10+ years, but recently was having red/painful skin where my glasses were on my face. I switched/tried 3 different glasses/material and they all do it. So I finally forced myself to use contacts. I've had contacts maybe a year now daily and can get away with wearing glasses a day or two, but after that they pain comes back. Anyway.... so I'm usually used to playing with glasses and having had an issue, unless my face has grease and they slide down. Otherwise my contacts, in league or when I'm playing seriously, I must not blink? as one or both eyes get cold/dry and then I can't see well when playing. Not sure what the best way is, maybe blink a lot while you play.... or have googles

Oh yeah, i couldn't play in contacts without the help of eye drops a lot of the time. My favorite are these mentholated ones i got into in Japan: Rohto. Shockingly refreshing! Although strangely, i sometimes have a killer ball in spite of my contacts fogging up along the way... like de-focusing lets my instincts play faster instead of thinking too hard what i want to aim for.

Ohh good idea. I'll have to get a set of eye drops. I actually never use them.

Yeah, it loves to happen when I'm actually making progress in LOTR's hahah.

Have you tried pure titanium frames Japanese or German quality ? It’s unusual to be allergic to a quality zyl frame aka plastic.

No, I have a carbon fiber pair, ray ban plastic and rayban metal. However even my ray ban sunglasses (rubbery coating) make it happen. So I’m not sure what is going on.
