Looking for some assistance on rebuilding flippers for a Playmatic machine. I've reached out to PB Resource and they don't carry anything. I also reached out to Mayfair and they don't have anything either. Numerous people have stated that Playmatic simply used Williams or Gottlieb parts to build their machines.

How can I confirm this?

If I want to rebuild my flippers on my Playmatic Conquest 200, what "generic" parts would I order?

At a loss on how to rebuild my flippers.

Last I saw under a playmatic playfield it didn't look like any other manufacturer I'd seen. Can you post pictures of your mechs?

Playmatic used *mostly* Williams and Gottlieb assemblies on their machines *except* the flippers were their own design. Absolutely ZERO parts (except for the flipper coil) are available for the flipper assembly. My advise is to purchase complete Williams system 11 flipper assemblies and reuse the Playmatic flipper coil.

#5 4 years ago

I can't believe they did that! Thanks for the feedback Ken. I'm not too swift when it comes to repairs, so if I order a complete Sys11 kit, is it basically plug and play by removing the old parts and inserting the new parts, or do I have to make some type of modifications?

Looking over kits, looks like it comes with everything except the coil stop. Just use the existing one or is there an equivalent replacement?

EDIT - I guess it depends on where you order the kits from. Pinball life does not include coil stops, other sites do.

Pinball life includes coil stop and tapered spring:

https://www.pinballlife.com/full-flipper-assembly-for-williamsbally-machines-from-021984-to-011987.html

Just email Terry and tell you want "no coil" because you will reuse the Playmatic one.

Awesome. That link actually answers my other question. When I was comparing the linkage of my existing flippers to the linkage in the Williams flippers I noticed that the link assembly length was greatly reduced with the Williams kit and I wasn't sure how that was going to work out by "swapping" parts. But since this is a fully built assembly, it solves that issue.

Just make sure that the new assembly has a similar stroke, so that it doesn't become easier/harder to trap

Hmm, I'm not familiar with "similar stroke". Could you please elaborate a little more?

By stroke I mean how far the flipper moves. Different mechs and different coil stops will make it go up farther, making cradling easier. Williams has three coil stop sizes available, hopefully one is similar to the original playmatic flippers.

The original Playmatic flippers had massive overtravel/slop and as they aged/wore became even worse allowing super easy ball trapping. I think using Williams assemblies would be much better for game play.

In the process of having my Playmatic Conquest converted to Williams. Can’t wait for the finished product.

So, I just wanted to post saying that I upgraded a Playmatic Conquest 200 flipper assemblies to Williams System 11 assemblies (less the coils). Originally I thought the Playmatic coils were going to be a drop in, but they are a little shorter then the standard Williams coils (see pic). I tried to use washers to space out the difference, but the flipper link would bottom out before reaching the backstop. So I ended up moving the front coil bracket back to the coil, drilled and tapped 6/32 holes to hold the Playmatic flipper coil into the System 11 flipper bracket (see other pics). This seems to have been the best solution as now other then the coil itself which is still available, the rest of the flipper mech is now Williams with parts easily available. I want to thank Ken Layton for some pointers and djreddog for the opportunity to do this for his machine. IMO the flippers feel way better and aren't spongy any more from wear.

The flippers have a much better, snappier feel to them now, don't they?

That they do. (This is my game that was modified). The original flippers were very wonky. So thankful pefdude was able to modify the game with System 11 assemblies.

Why not use the Williams coils?

#17 2 years ago

I'm doing this mod. Unfortunately, I can't reuse the original coils because the sleeves were melted in and the plunger wasn't sliding smoothly. The new Williams coil (FL23-600/30-2600) looks to be configured differently, so I want to make sure I attach the wires to the correct lugs, if anyone can confirm this:
Original coil:
Left: EOS switch
Center: Power return
Right: High voltage

Williams coil:
Left: High voltage
Center: EOS switch
Right: Power return

You can figure this out by looking at the wires attached to the terminals:

One terminal will have only a thick wire attached to it
One terminal will have only a thin wire attached to it
One terminal will have both a thick wire and a thin wire attached to it

The EOS switch will connect across the 2 terminals with thin wires, etc.

Thanks. It actually looks like I might have a problem with the Williams coil anyway. I don't know about how coil voltages work, but I see here https://www.flippers.com/coil-resistance.html that the FL-26-600/30-2600 uses 50v. I can't find any info on the Playmatic B-1008, but from the schematic it looks they're only being fed 30v.

If I recall correctly, the voltage is the reason we kept the existing coil.

30 seems like an odd voltage for flipper coils. I suppose that's to be expected with foreign made games. I ordered new ones.

I don't have a 6/32 drill bit. Would a 3/16 work?

6/32 in this context means to a hole with threads in it

i have a playmatic jolly ride 4p and im missing the coil and bracket that holds the coil in place. so i kinda have the similar problem. you don't happen to have the bracket still? if so are you willing to part with it ?
i copied the pic off your post to show what piece im missing r-77
