I've done it both ways - replacing vs. not replacing sockets.

I'm not a fan of wedge sockets so I stuck with bayonets. I had just as many problems with socket reliability whether they were new or used. I will say that the used sockets were in nice condition. If yours have surface rust or oxidation i would probably opt to replace, otherwise save the money, pull up the staples and transfer everything over in one piece.

Yes they're the same design. The biggest problem is the coil spring inside the socket. If it rusts or corrodes to the point where cleaning it to make it work results in removing the plating, then the socket will never be reliable.

Another problem is the insulator between the base and the socket. They can shrink allowing the socket to turn loosely and the connection will be poor.

I've heard evaporust works well. I wouldn't tumble the sockets because you'll spend forever picking the media out of them. Just soak, rinse and blow dry.
