With the recent clearcoat issues that Stern, JJP, and others are having, I would like to hear people's opinions and ideas for possible fixes and/or changes to how the playfields are done.
For example, what would happen if the major manufacturers decided to start doing reverse printed hardtops (like a printed lamination that attaches to the wood playfield and the printing is between the wood and the laminate) rather than direct printing the tops of the wood playfields?
Would the playfields play the same over the long term? Would they hold up longer or would they start having issues quicker than traditional playfields?
What other possible solutions are there if the clearcoat issues are related to clearcoat products that have been banned or discontinued?

If possible I would like to keep this discussion away from specific manufacturers and keep it about the way the playfields are made which appears to be fairly similar across most manufacturers.

I would like to have a different kind of discussion. It seems that the clearcoated playfields are problematic and I don’t want to go off on a tangent about changing the approach of playfield manufacturing in specific game’s threads.
The specific game threads regarding clearcoat problems are too much about manufacturer bashing or fanboys and also how the manufacturers need to replace the defective products and not enough about how the industry could possibly improve the products.

New construction: Wood playfield with a clear "plastic" hardtop that has the graphics printed underneath (like the guys are using in some playfield restorations at the present time). I said plastic in quotes because there's a more technical name for the specific plastic you'd want to use and it escapes me at the moment.

Pretty hard to come up with changes when the manufacturers won’t even tell you the current processes. Funny it falls to the customers to come up with solutions. They don’t have engineers? Point is the manufacturers better start talking or quietly figure this out yesterday before they lose more orders.

Imagine the cost savings of delegating your R&D to your customers.

Probably won’t be a popular opinion, but if regulations are becoming so onerous that quality MUST be compromised to satisfy them (not convinced this is true), why not explore outsourcing to a locale where the climate is a bit less overbearing and things like heavy-metal salts, VOCs, and organohalogens can be used as needed to “make ‘em like they used to”?

Also, given that we have been using wood since the days when pinball machines were literally built with pins but may not be able to continue doing so using proven processes/materials, it does seem like a good idea to explore “better living through chemistry” at this point.
