Hi does anyone out there have an overlay on their playfield that has held up over the years? Did you need to clear coat it? Any information about it would be great. Just to be clear I’m talking about the playfield sticker replacement not a clear protector or Mylar

    #2 6 years ago

I have one on my Space Shuttle, but it is also cleared, so might not be what you're looking for. If you just put the overlay on with no protection I can't imagine it lasting too long...

    #3 6 years ago

I've done 2 bride of pinbot looks like new, I added a playing field protector, and stayed flat.
Bally's Kiss, same thing only problem I have had is I think I put it back together
to soon, because the posts seemed to wrinkle around them after a while, even with the protector,
but it still looks great, don't understand why the ball doesn't get that close to them?

How long have you had the overlay on for? Should it go on and let it cure for a week? Then clear coat? Any kind of tips or tricks or things you would do differently? Thanks for the information, been thinking about putting one on my gorgar and high speed

    #5 6 years ago

I applied mine wet, so yea I would give it a good week just so it adheres to the PF before adding a overcoat.

    #6 6 years ago

Kiss has been on for over a year, wrinkling didn't appear until about 2 weeks after applying.
I think the one on Bop was actual a little thicker, that's been on 10 months with no lifting.

Wow that looks amazing, good job, how many hours for the whole thing? Tear down to rebuild, and again that’s awesome

About 12 hours on the playfield.

Looks great, you'd never know that was a overlay

    #12 6 years ago

I believe outsidedge is working on coming out with a hardtop for Kiss

    #13 6 years ago

Inserts should be filled/raised before applying overlay. I see a bunch of cupped inserts.

There are no cupped inserts. Inserts where all removed , sanded , reglued , then playfield was clear coated before overlay . That pic is the first coat of clear. You are seeing the inserts from the overlay.

I have an overlay on a Flash Gordon with no clearcoat. Installed it 6 years ago and there is still zero wear. It looks more or less like new.

Care to post pics? I'm picking up a FG with a worn down upper playfield. Lower pf looks nice enough, so I thought I'd explore the possibility of doing just the upper to see how it turns out. Did you have any cupped inserts that you needed to level out before applying the overlay?

This is on my FG>Ghostbusters custom game from 2012. I don't remember the inserts being cupped, but if they were at all, they were sanded and filled with clear. The upper playfield had deep grooves carved into the wood from the ball, so it had seen a lot of use. The method I used was to sand the playfield down flat, paint it white, spray clear, then stick on the overlay. The overlay was printed on a clear film with a mylar top layer. It still looks like new.

On overlays ive found it helps to install washers under the plastic posts, about 2/3rd the size of the bottom of the post. When the post is tightened the outer edge of the post will not wrinkle the overlay as much if at all. Also helps to hold yhe plastic post steady with one hand while turning the nut or screw tight.
