Hello, new user here looking for some clues on troubleshooting a problem with playfield lamps on a 1978 Bally Playboy. This is my first pinball machine, so I have a good deal to learn.

There are two lamps in the playfield that are not functioning properly. One lamp (the 2,000 point light in the bonus area just above the flippers) never illuminates and with the machine in the lamp test mode, I have determined that there is no voltage at the socket.

The other lamp (the #3 light in the Playboy Grotto area at the top left of the playfield) is constantly on and with the machine in test mode, that lamp alternates between bright and brighter, rather than between off and on as the others do.

It strikes me as a possibility that these two anomalies are somehow related but I leave that to more experienced folks to assess. Any pointers?

Thanks much,

Richard

the light that stays on, bad driver on lamp board (thinks its a 2n5060), the one with no voltage you need to find out why.

Are you sure about the no voltage at the socket? The bare wire the goes from socket to socket carries the positive voltage and the insulated wire completes the path to ground.

I start off by using a wire jumper to connect the tab of a known working socket (where the insulated wire is connected) to the tab of the non working socket. if it works then the bulb and socket are good and you have voltage at the socket. Then I test continuity back to the lamp driver board. These boards have problems with crushed or damaged crimps on the lamp connectors.

Check the board for bad solder joint at the connector.

For the not working lamp, check Q29 (2N5060 or 2N5064)

Also very nice is a Tech Chart with everything on it.

Thanks to all for the tips, gives me several things to investigate. Those reference materials look very useful, thanks Peter.
