Peculiar thing: when I start a multi-player game on a cold machine ['73 Gottlieb Hot Shot], after Player 1 loses first ball, it won't advance to player 2, but just gives a Player 1 Ball 1 again. This happens again once or twice after each drain, then finally goes to Player 2, and everything plays perfectly normal for the whole rest of the game. The trough ball switches appear to be fine, as far as I can tell. After I've played for maybe 20 minutes, the problem goes away, usually. Thanks for any insight.

This might be a mechanical issue with the player unit. Check if you can manually advance the player unit by pushing the solenoid plunger. It should smoothly advance. If it doesn't, then the player unit will need to be cleaned. Most likely it's old grease that is preventing the unit from advancing properly.

Other issues could be a faulty switch in the player unit solenoid circuit. Do you have a schematic for the machine?

Hi Fred, thx a lot. I’ll check those now and report back. Yes I have schematic and used it to my first diagnostic success so far (led me to a weak spring) though it’s still a struggle as a newbie.

The player unit seems very clean and spry. Not sluggish. The signal to fire the solenoid isn’t coming, I have now observed. It kicks out the ball, lots of turning and resetting happening, but the solenoid on player unit never firing. Checking schematic for what’s supposed to fire it, any advice appreciated!

Find the add player unit solenoid on the schematic and work your way through the switches. This circuit includes a lot of switches, so you can always use a jumper wire to bypass suspect switches... Also, check all the switch stack screws on the player unit to make sure they're tight...

Could be one of these sw. leading into the First Ball relay (ZB)

If the Player Unit solenoid isn't advancing from 1st to 2nd player, Inspect and diagnose this circuit with Alligator clip jumper wires
