Maybe (hopefully) Your "odd problem" is a simple problem. Williams and Bally have the so-called "Ball-Index-Relay" - it is mounted in the Cabinet on the bottom board - usually on the left, usually "rather away from the player". Williams and Bally are generous - when You launch a given ball AND immediately afterwardsYou lose the ball NOT making a point: SAME ball (same player) is given again. For to handle this the "Ball-Index-Relay" was invented - At the time You make the first points: "Ball-Index-Relay" pulls-in - STAYS pulling - You loose the ball (STILL pulling) - the "Brain of the pin" says: "Ball-Index-Relay IS pulling - I am entitled to step to next ball / next player".

And when Your "Ball-Index-Relay" is (faulty) NOT pulling - when it comes to "stepping to next ball / next player": The brain of the pin says: "NOT pulling - therefore I give the SAME ball.

Look in Your pin - look at the Ball-Index-Relay - make some points - question: Does the Relay pull-in and stay pulling ? IF (if) "No": You have found the problem, IF (if) "Yes": STILL the "Switch on the relay (to tell the brain of the pin) can be faulty NOT beeing closed, contact-points on that Switch may be oxidated, wire on the switch may be broken-off (?).
