The drop targets on the DE Simpsons I'm restoring were rather balky about the "drop" part, so I pulled the whole bank. On the backs of the targets, where each one slides against a switch, was some orange substance which I presume to be some sort of lube. This must have been what was causing the targets to hang up, as they drop down quite freely out of the machine. I'm assuming this lube/goop shouldn't be on there, but just wanted to make sure. The plastic targets should just rub against the metal switches, right?

I would not use lube in that application.

Interested in what people say as my data east lw3 had the same stuff on the drops. I wondered what it was. I figured dried lube as well.

When in doubt the operators would lubricate stuff. Sometimes a quick fix but as you can see not a good long term solution. The manual will typically note any locations that need to be lubricated, and there's only a few.

The only "lube" I ever use on drops is just auto wax.

Once it drys it does not attract dust or turn gunky.

This gunk was causing the targets to slide slowly down when hit, and then overpowered the strength of the spring and held them halfway up. Off it comes!

Slightly O/T, for a laugh I thought I'd post a pic of the sorry-ass 3-bank drops I just pulled out.
