I’ve been thinking about using a couple plasma balls as a topper but heard that they can sometimes interfere with electronics, does anyone know if they are safe to put on top of the backbox?

I've seen a few people use them as toppers before, and don't recall anyone mentioning any issues. I doubt it would be an issue unless you make physical contact (or very nearly so).
Quoted from alveolus:I have heard some speaker interference but haven’t noticed any other issues.
Are you using them on one of your pinball machines?

I have 2 serving as a MB topper.

Nice, did you tie them into the 12v in your machine or do you have them plugged into a 120v outlet?
Low voltage ones (the smaller ones operate on 5v) will offer no problems or interference. It’s a bit tricky to get them bright enough to be seen next to the translite bit that’s about it. I too have some as a topper, along with a small guitar amp And a musical Tesla coil. Working on making it interactive with the game. No issues
