Anyone know if coils like this are available? Nominally a S-24-850 but it seems to have a possibly (now burned up) fish paper core and a metal insert that provides the slider/curve feature. I think these coils are still good resistance-wise but they are kind of falling apart / burned.

The diameter of the metal insert is 0.710". I measured the inside diameter of a S-24-750 coil I got from pinball resource that has a plastic core and it is 0.705".

Apart from the metal insert, there is nothing in the coil except the wire.

the new coil you got from Steve probably has a plastic coil sleeve . metal sleeves are no longer used.

I had a friends pinball machine where the sleeve was removed at some point in its past & it wore through and falling apart

are you saying the plunger doesn't fit in the new coil sleeve ? ... or is that a plunger at all ? I wonder if it's supposed to go in without a sleeve & induces a magnetic field in the path of the ball

It’s a solid piece of metal that acts as a magnet to divert the ball. The flat part at the bottom sits directly against the bottom of the playfield in a routed recess. The diameter of the opening of the new coil is too small. I bought two NOS coils from John’s Jukes.
