    Quoted from ralphwiggum:

I don’t disagree at all. It is just unfortunate that guys like Hibler that are the true backbone of that site, are now in a tough spot because of something that is beyond his control. That is a ton of time for these guys they aren’t going to get back if the ship can’t be righted.

Considering Robin and Pinside are willing and able to absorb Pin wiki it will almost certainly get “righted” unless the offer is rebuffed. Pinwiki could be so much more than it is with gaining such a large number of members and infrastructure.

I just visited pinwiki today, and it's displaying this message:

    This is EXCELLENT news!

Many thanks for your efforts for all involved!

I'm happy to see the issues being resolved and the site getting the attention it deserves.

    #258 4 years ago

Wow; I admit I had honestly given up considering the time period involved... happy to be wrong. Sounds like a lot of work is going into trying to fix this once and for all and it sounds like some positive steps have been figured out for the future!

I look forward to checking out the site next weekend to help with my Sorcerer project.

On behalf of Casey and all of the contributors to PinWiki, thank you all for your patience. Together, we have a lot of work invested in the Wiki. I personally use it all the time. And I know how it is to have a resource unavailable when you really need it.

I'm also appreciative when folks let me know how the Wiki can be improved. I add to it as I come across oddball issues. I want to restructure the Williams 3-7 section since it doesn't match the "look and feel" of the rest of the Wiki. Sounds simple...but it takes quite an effort working within the MediaWiki editor/structure.

    Thanks again.

This is a temporary situation. The images must all be re-vetted. As is spelled out in the blog, Casey expects them to be back on line by the end of this weekend.

Pictures are back on line...Uploads to be enabled near term...
    Latest blog post...

    2/12/2020

This will be a short one, as I am preparing a more thorough "Going Forward: the next 10 years of the wiki" type post.

All uploads have been vetted and brought back online, this includes all archived uploads (the beauty of MediaWiki is that both uploads and page edits keep a history, so any time an upload has been changed (original was blurry, too small size, etc) the original gets archived in case of accidental removal, something malicious, etc.

With that said, uploads are still temporarily disabled, and are still going to be until some time later this week so that we can verify a few more security settings and configuration items. This will still adhere to the 2/16 timeline originally placed on it.

With the rebuild of the website, caching of pages has been temporarily disabled to flush some things through the system. What this means for you is that page loading speed may be impacted, however within the next day or two it will pick back up.

@kenlayton, that must have been a transient. Can't see that link now. Should be up this weekend.

It's Casey making a stop in. Newest blog post was just added: https://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Blog

I don't get here much, but now that PinWiki is 100% again, I am going to try and stop in for some Q&A if anyone has anything. If I miss it, Chris usually directs it my way.

I've said it before, but it's one of those things that doesn't feel like you can say it enough. Thank you everyone for your patience on the matter as we worked to resolve it. It honestly means the world to me.

    #272 4 years ago

Thanks for the update Casey, and thanks for addressing the issues with the site

    #273 4 years ago

No problem! As it's more or less mentioned, I want PinWiki to be around for the next 10 years! And the 10 after that...and after that.... Basically as long as we are relevant to exist on the web, we want to be there!

Considering the issues persisted for years and you want to see it survive for decades why not offer it to Pinside? It would seem to be an upside to all.

    Quoted from tacshose:

Because we have a better suited team to move forward on this now and not have issues like this again, and we in our committee don't want to hand this off to someone else and lose control of it. If we hand it off to another group to run it, we have zero control if it continues to exist, what their intentions are going forward, etc. Do I trust Pinside to not have nefarious intentions? Yeah at face value, they seem like great people. If we hand it over and tomorrow they decide that pinball is no longer their hobby and they pull the plug on it, we are going to be at the same spot we were 9 years ago with very little pinball repair information available.

In the end its my word of keeping it going vs anyone else's. You can trust my commitment to keeping it going or you don't have to, but at least at this point we have the core group that has been around since the beginning still supporting this, and I think that attests to the fact we aren't going anywhere. I can't correct the past, but I can correct the future on it.

With all of that said, we have systems in place to make the future better than the past has ever been. Our team is still running daily security checks. I still run regular back ups, and we have behind the scenes "disaster recovery" that is put in place in case anything from the host disappearing to me dying tomorrow. Trust can only be rebuilt with action and not speeches, so I do ask patience to see this going forward.

I can't speak directly for Chris Hibler, but he is actually retiring from his day job, and it seems he may be committing more of his time to getting information restructured, cleaned up, and generally easier to read. Ken Layton has been patiently waiting on file uploads that are now active again, as he has been graciously documenting some of the more modern and more obscure stuff.

Not quite years, but too long for most people.

    Quoted from tacshose:

why not offer it to Pinside?

PinSide is PinSide. The Wiki is the Wiki. If it remains up and available, I don't see the upside to somehow placing it under a PinSide umbrella. It wouldn't integrate well. It would still be two separate entities. I love PinSide. But I don't want the additional "over head" that being a part of PinSide would bring.

Pinside could easily create it's own wiki and integrate it into the site. I'm actually surprised they haven't done this already as it seems like a good fit.

I'm not a fan of this idea. Just IMHO... nobody is wrong.

I love Pinside yet Pinside content simply isn't very technical and, as I see it, getting less and less technical as time goes on.

I like the "dedicated to tech" pinwiki concept. And we don't need to create an Amazon or Facebook of Pinball.

Where I think Pinside could be real helpful is if they could create a repair tracking log. Instead of creating a thread for problem XYZ a "repair ticket" could be created. Something along the lines of a software bug tracking system. Problem status could be tracked... open, working, fixed. Over time this would be a great searchable repair database.

As a dev, I can only imagine how badly the backlog would build up in time haha.

    Casey is investigating the issue.
I don’t know if the resolution has been tracked down or not. It seems to be pretty random.

Aware of the issue, but still tracking down the root cause. We have been having this on and off for several weeks now, and have been collecting some timestamps to check logs, but so far nothing has been a smoking gun yet. I will be pushing some updates through this week that I am hoping will be a final fix.
