PINSOUND: AFM without an AV Board?

I recently picked up a project AFM that is missing the AV Board. Rather than search for a replacement, it appears that the Pinsound board can be used as an alternative. Their website makes the following statement in the list of compatible applications : -

WPC-95 AV Board (with or without original AV Board) : A-20516-50041

and their installation manual https://www.pinsound.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/WPC95_No_Audio_Video_install_full.pdf shows how to connect it all up.

Has anyone done this? How well does it work? Worth the investment or am I better to source a replacement AV board?

It's probably much easier to do this than hunt down an AV board. The cost would probably be about the same; maybe slightly more for an AV board if you can find one. They sometimes go for $400-$500+.

Works great, easier to source parts. Better sound, stereo!

I think wpc 95 you still need your original av board for the display???

No, a Pinsound Board & a WPC89 DMD Controller replace the AV board.

You can also purchase a Rottendog board from Big Daddy Enterprises or K's Arcade. They are listed at $365.

Correct

Good to know this option exists. I’ve always been hesitant buying WPC95 games because the AV board is more or less unobtainium.

And it turns out that’s kind of a myth too. There are Rottendog replacement boards, and there are NOS rebuilds that are still available. The PinSound solution isn’t any less expensive, but it does give you the option of stereo sound and replacing your audio

Both of those were only recent developments.

I understand the reticence but 95 games are some of the very best!

And some of the sound packages are great.

I have a MB that now plays the Monster Mash when you get Monster Bash - love it!

Shame there aren't more custom AFM sound packages.

A David Bowie mix would fit so well.

Space Oddity
Starman
Ashes to Ashes
Life on Mars
Moonage Daydream
Ziggy Stardust

I know, but I’m specifically thinking about how Wayne in Australia has been saying he bought up all the NOS parts 5 years ago or whatever. Not that everyone else knew about it, but the supply was there

Absolutely!! I’d love to fill my game room with them. They’re also the most nostalgic to me.

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated. Being new to PinSound, is it just a case of copying the sound ROM images and uploading them to the board?

Just watch the videos.

Pretty easy to do actually.

Great video, seems straight forward enough. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be anything uploaded for AFM though, so I guess this won't solve my problem, without the sound files. Seems odd, I wonder why these aren't available for such a popular game.

Cool!

Drop one of the Bowie songs in if you can

Will you add it to the community mixes on the pinsound website?

Might have to buy another pinsound board if it's awesome

The AFM listings was down. I emailed PinSound and Timothee explained they were about to put it back up, which it is now.
