I recently made the switch over to Stripe for my Pinside Shop. Im a first time user for Stripe and never heard of it before now. So my first question (many more to come Im sure) for the Pinside shops that have used this before is:

Once I get an order how do I use Stripe to create a shipping label to ship the product? Paypal was easy (when it worked), just click and add the weight and dimensions then print label. There is no option for this that I can see. I did do a search on it and "Shippo" is the only thing that comes up and, if I read this correctly, its not supported? This may explain why the instructions dont work, but Im frustrated at this point so I may be missing something.

Hopefully someone can help me out here.

    Thanks
    Rob

    Hi!

Shipping labels are in the works as we speak.

Stripe doesn’t support this is itself, so I’m partnering with Shippo building a system for generating shipping labels right from within Pinside in just a few clicks. You can do this directly from your order management page. Shippo are pretty cool. They offer great rates with discounts similar of even better than PayPal, is my understanding.

I expect the first beta of this to drop within a few days. First only for US based shops shipping to US addresses. International shipping will be added a little while later as this requires customs forms etc.

You can pay-per-label, directly from Pinside. Alternatively, you can sign up for your own Shippo account with automatic billing with them as well as setting up your own courrier accounts with UPS, FedEx, DHL etc.

    Hope that answers your question!

Will This "pay-per-label" shipping cost be pulled from Stripe? This would be ideal for me so then I would not need a Shippo account.

Robin- I am have a few issues with Stripe acct set up already.

    - Stripe wanted a business name from me and a website to proceed. I don’t have a website so I used pinside.com. Is that ok?
    - I asked stripe about how I get paid( like PayPal I just give my email address)and they said I would have send an invoice. What do I add to pinside so my buyers will pay thru stripe and not PayPal?

    - also if I buy something on pinside from another shop, do I now have to pay with stripe? If so, stripe will not allow me to add a credit card to my stripe acct( only a bank acct). How is this easier?

Please let me know. -Cento Creations

With a credit card. Stripe is a credit card payment processor. Buyers don't need an account with stripe.

Stripe isn't a digital wallet like paypal. All the service does is process credit card payments from buyers, then deposits the payments into your bank account.

Takes longer for the seller to get there payment. I think this will delay shipping in the long run. Stripe transfers the money from the Stripe balance to the seller's bank account. Stripe takes about 7 days to move the money.

If you don't have a business name, I would suggest to use you own name. It will be displayed on your invoices and while I can't give you official tax advice, in the EU this is how you would do that.

For website, you can paste a link to your Pinside Shop home page. Or to your Biz homepage on Pinside.

    Quoted from Cento:

Ok this is a common misunderstanding about Stripe. They are not a bank or an online "wallet". They are only a processor of payments. They are specialised in safely taking (credit card) information and processing payments with them, then depositing the funds of said payments to the account holders bank account. they take care of the security (i.e. 3D secure authentication), invoicing, and all the technical stuff of getting this working on a site like Pinside.

Yes, they will also allow you to take payments by email, phone or send out invoices. For that, simply log in to your Stripe account and follow their help guides. But understand that Stripe is not a "wallet".

But for Pinside, we just use them to accept and process payments, without us (Pinside) actually having any access to card details. That's important because this way Pinside can be PCI compliant. We don't have the burden of security that comes with processing card payments. We let Stripe handle this. They are great at this and already process payments for big names like Shopify, Booking.com, Deliveroo, Google, Lyft, Zoom, Slack, Amazon, Salesforce and many more.

So you set up an account with Stripe (easiest through the "link to stripe" button in your shop setup page, as it will pre-fill most of the form for you) and then they will handle card payments and deposit the funds to your bank account on a rolling basis. I think the default payout scheme is 7 days, but you change that to every day or every month or anything in between. Once your account gets the "trusted status", funds can be payed out as quickly as 3 days after a payment was processed.

It's also important to note, as a Shop owner, that once a payment is successful, you can safely send out your goods immediately. The funds are guaranteed by the card issuers bank and will be deposited in your bank account in the next batch.

    Quoted from Cento:

    - also if I buy something on pinside from another shop, do I now have to pay with stripe? If so, stripe will not allow me to add a credit card to my stripe acct( only a bank acct). How is this easier?

Well it's important to understand that you cannot pay for purchases with the funds in your Stripe account. It's not a wallet. It doen't act like a bank account. It's only a processor. An intermediary step between your customers card payment and your bank account.

You pay with your card. Stripe processes that payment. Payee gets their money.

So allow me to make a simplified explanation of the whole process: You put some stuff in your Pinside Shopping cart. Then you go to our checkout page and hit the "place order" button. You will now be forwarded to a hosted payments page where Stripe takes your card details and process the payment securely. Your bank tells Stripe "it's okay, this payment is valid". The Shop will be notified that the payment was successful and the order placed. They are guaranteed of those funds and ship out your cool new mods. The money will be deposited in to their bank accounts in a few days in "batches" of payments. This keeps the fees low.

    Quoted from Brtlkat:

Takes longer for the seller to get there payment. I think this will delay shipping in the long run. Stripe transfers the money from the Stripe balance to the seller's bank account. Stripe takes about 7 days to move the money.

Yes and no. It indeed takes a few days for the actual funds to hit your bank account. And you cannot use those funds until they do. On the other hand, for a business this shouldn't be an issue. Again, the funds are guaranteed once the payment is made and approved (i.e. when Pinside says the order is paid, it IS actually paid), so you can start shipping straight away.

For what it's worth, I personally feel Stripe is much safer than PayPal. Stripe only handles card payments, then sends the money to your trusted bank account ASAP. Your money doesn't sit in an online 'wallet', like PayPal, waiting to be hacked by someone. But that's just my unsolicited opinion

Only the first payment is 7 days. After that in the USA, it is every 2 days.

I switched to stripe on the day Robin announced it. It is nothing like PayPal, but I actually like it a lot more.

I have had a few people contact me that were confused about payment using stripe through pinside.... In those cases, I just interacted directly via PayPal with them.

Why do I have wait 2 days for payments from stripe?? When PayPal was instant? So I have make my customers wait 2 days before I ship their items? Again I ask how is stripe better?

I am confused ... Why do you have to wait two days to ship? If it is in stripe, the funds have been confirmed. Stripe is a legitimate credit card processor.

PayPal was the exact same, except they took 3-4 days to transfer to your bank account unless you paid an additional 1% to transfer instantly.

PayPal sends your withdrawals via ach which is never more than 3 days(industry regulation). WithPayPal you can withdraw instantly on upon payment. With Stripe you cant withdraw for 2 days after you receive payment. Then another potential 3 days via ach for your bank to receive it. Big difference. With Stripe your always 2 days behind PayPal. According to Stripe if you ship during the first 2 days that they are holding your payment, the buyer could dispute the charge with their bank/credit card( not with Stripe) so if you shipped you’ll be out your payment and your product. That’s why you can’t ship immediately.

I'm still showing the following warning on my Shop Overview page -- though I'm set up with Stripe and I am receiving payouts:

"NOTE! STRIPE PAYOUTS ARE NOT ENABLED YET. PLEASE LOG IN TO STRIPE TO MAKE SURE YOUR ACCOUNT IS ALL SET UP.
You can go ahead and set up your shop, but it will remain invisible to anyone but you and your Biz team members until your Biz can be verified."

Any other shops having this issue? I'm pretty sure my shop (Rocket City Pinball) is visible since I've received orders but I'm not clear why the warning is still there.

In transferring your received payments to your actual bank account, both Stripe and Paypal don't differ all that much. Stripe might be a bit slower (especially for non-established, new accounts) but in all honesty I don't see a big issue here. Funds are indeed guaranteed upon receiving, unless you get a dispute (but the same goes for PayPal).

Speaking of disputes. PayPal is much worse with disputes is my personal experience. PayPal often sides with the buyer and you could well be out of your money AND your product (I have been there). And since their customer support is near non-existent, good luck in discussing those disputes with an actual person who can help. On the other hand, I have great experience with Stripe disputes and never lost a disputed case (luckily I only had a handful of them in the several years I've been accepting payments through Stripe). Their evidence uploading tools are slick, a streamlined process and you shouldn't have anything to worry about if you are a legit business.

The biggest difference is that Stripe is not a wallet. On PayPal you would be able to spend any income you make directly at places that accept PayPal. With Stripe, you cannot spend it until it is transferred to your bank account. That's the biggest difference to Stripe. But this does not weigh against the gazillion failed payments that I had to deal with due to their buggy platform.

Look, I respect everyone's opinion and if you like PayPal that's absolutely fine. But I couldn't justify spending so much time on PayPal issues anymore. Sorry!

Is there both buyer and seller protection on Stripe?
If not who covers the loss.
Last I looked Stripe had a max coverage of $250 per month, that is why we do paypal.

If you're worried about chargebacks, Stripe offers chargeback protection costing 0.4% per charge.

But realistically, how many disputes have you had over purchases? And how many of those disputes did you lose? If you have evidence of the purchase and shipment, wouldn't that be enough to win any dispute?

As a seller on Pinside; My shop is now in Maintenance mode.
I will not be signing up for Stripe.
As far as I'm concerned; this is not cool... to switch this up with no warning to sellers.
That said; I'm small potatoes ... so will respect the operators decision.

    Ya'll have fun.
