Quoted from herg:Why should it be any different than how most people use words?
It isn't. It just comes down to whether the parties agree on the intent of the "insult."
I've got 2 downvotes. Anyway to find them? I'd like to know if I was wrong about something or just an asshole.
Quoted from dmbjunky:I love pinside. I love the disagreements and arguments that provide insight and entertainment. I love the people I meet digitally and irl. I'm not ashamed to tell people my pinside name. I love thumbs down and ratings. I love it all.
I'm with DMB on this one. I love the wealth of information I get on here, the help I get when I need it, and the conversation in general. Honestly, I've met some pretty awesome hobbyists IRL from Pinside. I even started "attacking" some people on here recently, purely out of frustration of their trolling and negativity...which is not like me at all and not who I am. And also like DMB said, I have no problem sharing my name on here...my name is actually in my damn handle. Doesn't get anymore transparent than that. I get that privacy is both sought after and necessary on some level, but most who have chimed in with not wanting to share their real identity when such ideas are proposed are...surprisingly...the trolls themselves.
On a recent trip to Cali, I was itching to play some pins after a few days away from mine. Got in touch with Promojoe23 (awesome guy), who I've chatted with occasionally. Turns out he was only about 10 mins away from my sister's house. He invited me right over without question, got to chill for a couple hours and play his very nice line up; got to introduce my brother-in-law to the actual pinball hobby who tagged along for the ride; exchanged some hobby and repair talk; knocked back a few IPA's and had some great convo. If not for Pinside, that wouldn't have been possible and I would have been searching for some arcade with run down machines to satisfy my thirst. Even after just a few years on this site, I feel confident that anywhere I would travel I could easily reach out to a fellow Pinsider to chill, talk some pinball and play some games...and I would do the same if any of you are ever in the Philly area and needed a fix.
What's funny to me is that most of the trolls to whom Robin is referring (conceivably) have actually chimed in on this thread already, as if they aren't the problem. I love this site too and want to see it thrive, and I certainly don't mind arguing here and there like every person. Discussion gets heated sometimes...and that is good. Like life, it won't always be rainbows and butterflies. This hobby is great and unique, but can also be frustrating at times. It just doesn't have to be the same 5 - 10 people always jumping in on threads they could really care less about, and implanting their egotistical, unsolicited, off-topic and unintelligible banter. I don't think I'm smarter than any of you. I don't think I know more about games than any of you. I don't care how much money you have. I don't care if you're a Bally/Williams guy/gal, Stern fanatic or you just collect EM's or Gottlieb/Premier games (wink). We are all pinball hobbyists & enthusiasts, and we are keeping this hobby alive.
Just my two cents, and thanks for reading.

That would be a cool feature I know I have wanted to see where my downvotes received were from and what statement I made to acquire them.

I am not banned from VFW show, nor banned from Pinside. I doubt either will be happening.
Quoted from spfxted:Has even THIS thread derailed??
In our defense it started as the "Beginning of a new Dawn" bitch slap to pinside that was then quickly neutered by Robin
Quoted from Whysnow:I am not banned from VFW show, nor banned from Pinside. I doubt either will be happening.
You're just banned from playing Clay's Predator
purge
verb: rid (someone) of an unwanted feeling, memory, or condition, typically giving a sense of cathartic release
noun: an abrupt or violent removal of a group of people from an organization or place
I figured since I went back to eating Captain Crunch instead of that not to be named cereal, that I might get to participate in that thread I was booted out of temporarily yesterday.
The timer ran out on my temp. ban a while ago, but now it just says this.
"You won't be be able to post to this thread for another . "
Oh well....
Quoted from Topher5000:I've got 2 downvotes. Anyway to find them? I'd like to know if I was wrong about something or just an asshole.
They don't mean anything.
Quoted from metallik:You're just banned from playing Clay's Predator
as far as I know, we are all banned from playing it, lol.
Quoted from o-din:Just a tip for you guys. This is how you get ejected from pinside threads and get on the shit list. See you guys later!

Downvotes really should not offend people. It's not that big of a deal.

Had to down vote it.

I would start the list with the most "ignored" members. BTW, a lot of posts in this thread say: Ignored user post.
I think this is a great idea. Only three people in my ignore file and it makes the place so much better. If only they were actually gone and not stirring up hate and discontent with others...
Maybe its time to cut out some of the cursing too and make this place more family and work friendly? This could just be a user selection not to display those words. In a forum that I run, words are automatically substituted for more benign words. For instance F-word becomes flowers.
Quoted from Cornelius:Then you just get people going F this F that F them F it.
Flowers to you.
Quoted from John_I:For instance F-word becomes flowers.
I frequent another forum where all cuss words just become *****!!*@*@*#* sort of stuff.
I like the idea of Flowers. Daffodils. Bearded Ibis.
Here's my opinion:
Everybody here loves pinball. Everyone here likes to express their opinions on pinball. Sometimes certain people express their opinions a little too much. I don't know where that line is. You might be surprised to read this coming from me, but I really am not interested in testing where that line is. I feel that if you post something that I don't like, or that I don't agree with, I should be able to express myself accordingly. And vice versa! I would much rather have a discussion with you about why I think you're wrong (or, again, vice versa) rather than you report and / or ignore me.
So that's why I think Crazy Levi is being incredibly, sociopathically disingenuous in this thread, this thread about people being cool with one another. I've got my own personal reasons as to why I don't like the guy, but I also have reasons that are perfectly framed within his silly argument about ignoring people and being stalked as well as within the supposed Pinside "rules" framework.
As to the former: like I said, I'd rather argue with a person about something than have that person put me on ignore because they can't win the argument. A little behind the scenes action for you: CL PM'd me once about something stupid, and when I responded, I got the "this user is blocking you!" notice. What kind of F'ing BS is that?
As to the latter: coming into a thread with the title "Who likes [fill in the whatever here]" and interrupting the supposed 'lovefest' with why [that whatever] sucks is the epitome of "not being nice". It's incredibly... poopy is what it is. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one that feels this way around here. Maybe I'm the only one that's stupid enough not to have them on my ignore list.
But I hate ignoring people! I think that's such a weak way out. What to do, what to do.
I hope that this whole Pinside "purge" is fair, and a level playing field for everyone posting here. I get the feeling that it isn't going to be, though. The shit-stirrer with pinball trophies is always going to be >>> the passionate dude with a shitty Gottlieb in his collection.
Quoted from Cornelius:I just get tired of the same person flaunting their ability to get away with breaking Pinside rules, but whatever. I also get tired of being moderated, so I'm dropping it.
Quoted from Cornelius:So that's why I think Crazy Levi is being incredibly, sociopathically disingenuous in this thread, this thread about people being cool with one another.
Man you made it like 12 hours too
Quoted from TheLaw:Man you made it like 12 hours too
If this isn't the thread to communicate why you think this purge might not be the greatest and / or fairest idea, please point me in its' direction.
Quoted from Whysnow:I frequent another forum where all cuss words just become *****!!*@*@*#* sort of stuff.
I like the idea of Flowers. Daffodils. Bearded Ibis.
I remember Moe calling Curly a "pussy willow head" so that could work.
Quoted from dmbjunky:oh geez...
Care to discuss what you mean by this, or are you going to do the exact same things I mentioned in my post?
Ouch, I just looked up what "snowflake" means. Whoever's still using that term... you'd better realize what you're aligning yourself with by saying that.
I'm all for moderation. As in, moderated by people with no personal investment in an argument. That's how you conduct politics, that's how you conduct business.. that's how the courts conduct themselves... seems reasonable that this approach has been successful for 3000 years. Except for the fascists and dictator sojourns. Those didn't seem to work out so well. Nor did the chaos-filled free-for-Alls
Quoted from Cornelius:So that's why I think Crazy Levi is being incredibly, sociopathically disingenuous in this thread, this thread about people being cool with one another. I've got my own personal reasons as to why I don't like the guy
..and other folks (like me) think he's pretty cool. Don't use this thread to further your personal vendettas.
Quoted from cooked71:It's probably a good thing, but I get the feeling it will be a heavy handed approach early on, and then gradually become more lax as time goes on and moderators tire of the endless workload and constant adjudication.
I thought the block user and drain thread tools were great and surely they achieve the same purpose. They allow a user to customize Pinside to their own personal tolerance level.
Personally, if I get sick of a thread I just don't visit it any more. If I get sick of a user, I just don't read their posts. It's not that hard. Some users that are no doubt on the "no fly" list are actually occasionally entertaining. Funnily enough it's the ones that complain endlessly about said users that are the ones I usually ignore.
But the problem users usually won't have that kind of self-control and then the shit-show just continues leading to pollute the thread for everyone else.. including new folks.
Is it better to turn your eyes from the trainwreck? Or should it be fixed?
Quoted from metallik:..and other folks (like me) think he's pretty cool. Don't use this thread to further your personal vendettas.
This is exactly what I was afraid of: people who know the dude and need to be like "oh but he's so wonderful IRL, you must be a troll to disagree with him!"
I outlined two completely valid reasons as to why he is being dangerously disingenuous for the good of Pinside in this thread, and I get "bubububu don't start your personal vendettas in here!". My discussion = your personal vendetta. Unless you're just shucking and jiving for upvotes, and honestly, like 90% of yawl are doing that.
Definition: Generation Snowflake, or Snowflake Generation, is a term used to characterize people who became adults in the 2010s as being more prone to taking offence and less resilient than previous generations, or too emotionally vulnerable to cope with views that challenge their own
Quoted from Cornelius:I kinda wish I never shared that Gorf video with you, chadderack
Down vote is a disagreement, that's all. I think that in general focusing on individual pinsiders is a waste of time. That's what good moderators are for. I think the staff is doing a good job at that. If they're not, that's what it sounds like they're prepared to do.
Only 30 days? People rarely change. If not a permanent booting, I'd recommend severely restricted access and limit of site privileges.
Quoted from chadderack:Down vote is a disagreement, that's all. I think that in general focusing on individual pinsiders is a waste of time. That's what good moderators are for. I think the staff is doing a good job at that. If they're not, that's what it sound like they're prepared to do.
Well, you're doing an awful lot of downvoting on my particular visage, my man.
This thread is all about the individual, though, is it not? People are going to get the boot, all in light of the Kaneda situation. And here I was, thinking that particular issue was solved with the whole "verified Pinside member" thing. So that's why I'm calling to light Mr. Levi's particular brand of trolling, in this thread and this thread only. If the moderators think his whole "I'm a little stinker" act is okay, then they need to adjust the rules so that ALL of us can be little shitbirds if we wanna be, rather than him get exceptional treatment.
Quoted from Cornelius:So that's why I think Crazy Levi is being incredibly, sociopathically disingenuous in this thread, this thread about people being cool with one another. As soon as you make points or retorts about the poster.. instead of what they are talking about... then I think you've and the participants have missed one of the core tenements. The topic is pinball - not bashing individuals.
Quoted from Cornelius:Well, you're doing an awful lot of downvoting on my particular visage, my man.
I don't really keep track of who downvotes me. But, if I'm getting the downvotes I assume that maybe I'm full of shit... so I'll go back and think hard about it. It's actually pretty useful.
As for the comments about that particular user... again. I'll leave that to the staff. I was an admin on an art site with heavy traffic for about 4 years and it was no fun, and pretty thankless. They're doing as well as could be expected.
And if an a-hole is an a-hole? I don't care. Tigers don't change their stripes; pigs can't help being pigs; let people be what they are. I'm an a-hole most of the time too.
Quoted from chadderack:I don't really keep track of who downvotes me. ...
i do... keep the paper & pad right next to the pc. each user with a list of X's by their names.
so then... years down the road when they least expect it...
Quoted from Cornelius:As to the latter: coming into a thread with the title "Who likes [fill in the whatever here]" and interrupting the supposed 'lovefest' with why [that whatever] sucks is the epitome of "not being nice". It's incredibly... poopy is what it is.
This is totally off topic but that thread title was kind of a trick. By asking in the question in the title I felt he wanted opinions on why Premiers were or were not loved. It seemed like I wasn't the only one because many others gave their opinions on the matter. When it was stated that it was more like a club thread, many people understood and backed out including Levi but you seemed to only take offense to his posting and have brought this matter into a separate thread.
Isn't that a sort of stalking or trolling? If you're looking for people to pile on, this isn't the thread. I think you've misunderstood.
