Quoted from DCP:

Is that a Travis Bean neck on a Jazzmaster? Where in the heck did you find that? It's cool![quoted image]

DCP It's a neck made by Electrical Guitar Company. I bought the neck from them and assembled the guitar around it. It's a Japanese body, American Fender tremolo, Rothstein pick guard assembly, Mastery bridge and Fralin pickups. It's my main guitar.

It's a Frankenstein guitar. He plugged it into an amp and it came alive!

Oddly enough, it shares the same room with my most recent project.

Quoted from CrazyLevi:

Been playing a TON since this started. In fact the only thing I’ve had shipped are 3 dozen picks and a couple set of string.
I honestly hadn’t touched this in a couple years, so that’s one good thing about all this, at least for me if not my neighbors. My calluses are pretty much back now too.[quoted image]

The KNOBS!

My wife owns a Baritone Longhorn Danelectro guitar, that she seems to think is kinda rare and collectible.
She has yet to figure out how to play it properly or to its full potential.
She is wondering if she uses a kaypo on the 5th fret and re-tunes it
she can then play it like a normal guitar.
pasted_image (resized).pngpasted_image (resized).png

OOOPPs! Silly me,
the above is not a baritone, that is just a normal 6 string longhorn.
She does have a longhorn baritone, i just can't find a photo handy at the moment.

#106 4 years ago

My first guitar. My dad bought it for me at a pawn shop near Detroit in 1990. Cheap Asian Les Paul ripoff (Magnum). Nothing great, but I enjoyed it. Don't play it much any more, if I do decide to play it much, I am going to have to have it set up, the action is all goofed up...

IMG_4046 (resized).JPGIMG_4046 (resized).JPG

I always loved Telecasters, but never could justify getting a real Fender when I was younger and really wanted one. I settled for this Hamer, and I still REALLY like it. Bought it when I was in my mid-20's. I do need to take this one in to Pete and have him set it up again, it's been a while...
IMG_4042 (resized).JPGIMG_4042 (resized).JPG

My wife bought me this Yamaha for Christmas in 2018, because she hated my previous "goofing around" guitar (featured after this one.) I really like this, again, nothing really special, but it plays really easy and has a nice full tone. I probably play this one the most.
IMG_4044 (resized).JPGIMG_4044 (resized).JPG

And then there's this one. It's an old Harmony that my buddy gave me decades ago. I played the shit outta this thing. Intonation is off a bit further up the neck (which is why I have the bridge set up odd like that), but it's a great little guitar.
fullsizeoutput_3e5b (resized).jpegfullsizeoutput_3e5b (resized).jpeg

Then there are these last two. This first one belonged to my dad's dad. As far as I can tell, it's a late 1940's Kay. It needs some help. The pick guard buzzes really bad, and the tuners are horrible. Sound is okay, but nothing like the one my other grandpa had (up next). Don't play it much at all, but I'll obviously never get rid of it.
IMG_4039 (resized).JPGIMG_4039 (resized).JPG

And finally, my favorite. It was my mom's dad's guitar, and I grew up watching him play weird old Woody Guthrie and Hank Williams songs on it. It somehow made it's way to me, and I will treasure it forever. 1937 Gibson L-30. My grandpa bought it from one of his relatives in about 1961. Made just up the road from me in Kalamazoo. It's so easy to play, and has a really nice, bright tone. Has some buckle rash, and there is a small crack in the top, but as far as I'm concerned, it's perfect....

That les Paul rip-off is so cool, especially the panel. Reminds of the professional or recording or whatever they called it.

I remember those Danelectros. Fitting that it's your wife's guitar...with the "lipstick" pickups.

Thanks for the walk through time. I felt like I was reading about and looking at a Back to the Future guitar story.

Anyone here use a Tonewood amp?

I just discovered these and am considering getting one.

Gibson J-185 EC
Solid spruce top, arched flamed maple back and sides.
Ebony fingerboard with mother-of-pearl inlays.
Ebony "moustache" bridge.
Gold kidney tuners.
Abalone rosette inlay.

The camera just can't do the flamed maple justice on this one. This guitar plays so bright and is full of volume.

And here's a fairly uncommon 12 string version to compliment it.

I really like this stand I bought from All Wood Stands. You can get different woods and configurations for more guitars or acoustic.

That is super efficient space-wise. I like it.

At my previous house my wife was always complaining about guitar cases on the floor everywhere. So when we bought our current house, one of my first projects was to install this custom built-in. The big drawer at the bottom is perfect for strings, accessories, and such.

I like your storage idea. Nice SG! I have one with P90s. Great for AC/DC and Sabbath.

Sweet! I love single coils on an SG! Throw up a pic or two. We need more guitar porn.

#118 4 years ago

Pic of the guitar rack in the basement (pinball room) and a pic of my two latest creations - custom body and head shapes I designed, made with all really cool woods - curly koa, quilted maple, birdseye maple, and some honduras mahogany for good measure! I sold all my amps over the years and now only play a Line 6 Flextone II, 2x12 combo digital modeling amp.

When I started this thread I figured there had to be some pinsiders that have guitars and we would see some cool stuff. But this is exceeding expectations, what we have so far is just ridiculously cool. And the hits just keep on coming!

Well, those are cool, but I kinda meant throw up a couple of pics of your SG with the P90s.

Here are my main 3 road guitars:

The Yakima String works guitar is a custom job I had made a few years ago - fat thick neck, unfinished for speed. OFR tremolo, 5-piece neck, and original Bill Lawrence L-500-XL in the bridge.

The middle one is actually a synth I use on one song (think Holdsworth’s Synthaxe) - the whole screen area lights up, I am programming it to react to the music too

The other one is a Washburn N4, but without Nuno Bettencourt’s $1000 signature on it. Has the original Stephen’s cutaway neck, Bare Knuckle pickup in the bridge, and in the neck a tone zone I removed from my John Petrucci Ibanez a million years ago. I love the body shape and size (it’s a 3/4) but I’m not in love with the neck. Not sure what to do about that.

Edit: maybe not a Tone Zone, I’m not sure what pickup that is in the neck any more. Definitely a DiMarzio

Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

I used my ARP Avatar guitar synth (with synth pickup mounted by the bridge on my '76 Les Paul Custom with two DiMarzio dual sound pickups) on a whole one song also (my composition "Push It!" that features Ron playing a hot mini-Moog solo).

Awesome! I was a long-time player of the Roland GK-2A and GK-3, with various synths and COSM modelers (IMO Roland has still never topped the original VG-8 modeler). I just recently switched over to the Kitara (that big plastic thing masquerading as a guitar) purely because it looks flashier on stage.

That's rad you have an Avatar. I picked up an Arp Odyssey in the mid 90's. That was my second analog synth, I had a Korg Poly 800 when I was a kid in the 80s. I still miss that Arp.

Not the best picture, but I really like this Japanese "Barth" guitar. Got it from a guy in Western Maryland a couple years ago, along with a 100w Yamaha amp and a Kramer Striker 100ST, all for $100. Single pickup is loud, and the rosewood fretboard is very thick.

Here's the Barth with a 1976 Gibson Firebird and a 1981 Greco strat copy. I bought the Firebird in Boulder, Colorado in 1985. The Strat came from Hawaii via eBay about 10 years ago.

My oldest guitar, a 1953 Fender Champion lap steel. The pickups and knobs are original and were not robbed by a Telecaster restorer. It has a razor-sharp sound and sounds best through old small tube amps. I play it through this 1955 Valco Oahu amp that's about 15 watts. It has the original field coil speaker (electromagnet on speaker). The amp came from luthier Larry Pogreba when he lived in Lyons, Colorado. I picked it out of a room full of National, Gibson, Valco, Magnavox and other amps that Pogreba had collected over the years. I had told him I was searching for a 50s tube amp, and he invited me over to his shop to try out 20+ cool small amps and pick the one I liked best. I've had it for 20 years, and I'll never sell it! That homely little amp rips with any guitar. It doesn't need any pedals, just a cord straight to the amp.

She was a big big fan of Elvira.
In fact that is how I met her, when i bought her EATPM pin 10 yrs ago this month.

#137 4 years ago
Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

Does she still play

Barely.
Never really got the hang of it, more or less took up the guitar as a tribute to her late daughter; who did play.
She can tune it and play a few basic chords and play a couple songs where one can recognize the melody.
She just sold the Danelectro Longhorn that i posted photos on here about a week ago,
She still has her Baritone Longhorn, since it is fairly rare.
She took up the harp about three years ago, but has been very lax lately with her practice.
She was better at picking up the harp than the guitar.
DSCF1012 (resized).JPGDSCF1012 (resized).JPG
That's one of our cats (Jack) curled in a ball taking a nap.
the cats tend to gather around when she plays as the sounds are soothing.

If you think vintage guitars are expensive,
wait until you try pricing a Vintage Lyons&Healy harp from 1917.

My dad bought me my first electric about 23 years ago. An old Red Kramer Aerostar ZX30. The neck has a warp that makes anything past the 12th fret buzz pretty bad no matter how I set the action.

Would like to replace the neck, wish I could find one if anyone had a pile of Kramer guitar parts from the 80s lying around.

There’s a bunch here: https://reverb.com/marketplace?query=aerostar

Looks also like the neck has a truss rod - you could probably get that adjusted

Hey guys, I have an acoustic and figure with all the time I now hav at home in isolation, it's my opportunity to start learning to play guitar.

Wondering if anyone can suggest a good program to follow?

Had a couple of friends suggest learning some finger position and tab sheets, but not sure where to get started with that. There's a plethora of videos on Youtube, and then apps like Yousician.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Yes indeed. How to tune, hold the guitar, notes on the neck, etc. It is geared toward new players, but there is also a library of songs with lessons and tabs.

Guitars really are like pinball machines/arcade games, etc...they have a way of multiplying. Someone mentioned they like the figured wood. My Breedlove (damn need to wipe it down!) is a '94, made during that brief period when Larry formed Breedlove before returning to Taylor. Some of the nicest quilted maple I've ever seen. The Gibson is a '34 L7 (I wanted the smaller body of the pre 35's and all the L5's in good shape were crazy $). I have the original, matching serial#, pickguard for it. It is only slightly warped at the end towards the saddle so that it sticks just above the 1st string. I play fingerstyle so I took it off.

Here is my wall of guitars,on the other side of the room are the pins. Before getting a pin I used to play the guitar for 2-3 hours in the evening ,now play pinball for an hour or two and guitar for an hour or two!

Love all my guitars including the vintage 1966 guild and the 1959 les paul. Have a small brugera tube amp with the .1 watt attenuation ,gain high and volume low, sounds great
