Quoted from PantherCityPins:

Looking for some opinions on this gold flake finish. This is a Reverend Jetstream 390 at my local guitar shop. The finish is exclusive to my local shop. The guitar plays fantastically and I really like the p-90 tone it gives. I don’t have a p-90 guitar and the triple pickup configuration seems very versatile.
I’m on the fence about the color, it’s a big departure from what I would normally get but that’s kind of a draw too if that makes sense. What do you guys think? Does it look too 1970s disco?

Looks pretty fuckin cool to me

Exclusive color. Looks pretty cool. I like their Ivy better but that one's cool.

It does make sense. Plus you cant go wrong with P90s.

Check out the Guild P-90s. Really fantastic guitars, especially for the price. Also, comes in a satin gold.

Love the Heavy Flake in that Gold(top) finish.

If you buy that guitar, you have to play exclusively 60s big band lounge jazz with it.

Rather than 70s disco era, that guitar really reminds me of a the 60s Danelectro vibe. I’ve never played a Reverend, but you report this one plays well. If it speaks to you, go for it. It definitely makes a statement!

That said, did you plug in that SG Jr.? They are surprisingly versatile, going from a nice clean tone to screaming scalded monkey! It’s all in the tone and volume. It’s not a guitar to set at 10 and forget. 500K pots, too.

New guitar day! After sleeping on it and talking with my wife I got the green light to buy it. The guy at the shop cut me a bit of a deal on the guitar and case so my wife headed over and grabbed it today. The last of 12 exclusive gold flake finish Jetstream 390s from Reverend Guitars.

Thanks for all the great input and help!

Thought y'all might be interested in this. My stepdad recently unearthed this video of his band playing at a regional venue in 1987. The lead singer is playing a beautiful Mosrite Ventures. My stepdad says he still has it. The lead guitarist is playing a Jackson, but I'm not sure if he still has it. My stepdad still has his Fender bass. I believe it's a '74.

Awesome, yet another reason why the 80s were the best. Great name for a band too, Ripchords - nice!

Very cool video. I love old concert footage especially of bands that aren't huge or anything like that. Especially love seeing old venues.

Funnily enough I was just near The Nick. I should have reached out and met up with you in Birmingham. Played pins all night at Mom's Basement. GC'd a few of em.

Attended a wedding held at a museum, they had Janice’ left handed Les Paul (and wig!)

Ever notice how all muppets are left handed?

So I bought my first Les Paul Custom this past week. I bought it from Gibson, has a unique “Tygermyst” (that’s what Gibson calls it) finish. It’s a bengal burst with a crazy transparent white sparkle glaze over it. Looks different every which way you look at it, pictures cannot capture how it looks in person. It’s impossible to get an accurate picture taken. Plays amazing.

LOVE the Museum of the Moving Image. That Muppets exhibit was the the I traveled for the first time I went to New York as a kid. Loved it then. loved it now.

I think the muppets are left handed because when the puppeteers were watching themselves in the monitors below the deck they have to think of things in reverse, so a lot of would be right handed things are left handed.

It’s because most of the performers are indeed right handed, and the dominant hand typically goes to the mouth to speak (far more important to get lip sync correct), while the other hand is held up by a rod (like Kermit) or the performer’s actual hand in a glove (like Ernie, Oscar, Fozzie, etc). Not every Muppet is actually left handed, although all the primary Muppeteers are right handed, so their counterparts are the opposite

I'm a musician, but I'm really not a gear head - primarily keys / songwriting. I can fake my way around guitar - but I have too many guitars when considering my skill level (4). Nothing expensive or that sought after, but I do have one of the Giger Ibanez's purely for the aesthetic. I absolutely hate the floyd rose on it. I can never get it tuned - I can't get block to work on it - so it just sits lol.

Get the Ibanez professionally set up. Never change the tuning or the guage or even the brand of strings. Depending on the climate you can get away with doing that maybe once a year. They are fantastic when they are dialed in and really not that difficult once you understand them. If you want to try a new tuning or something, use one of the other guitars. Good luck!

I have 2 guitars with Floyd Rose including one Ibanez. They hold tune like a rock. It’s not unusual for me to leave the strings for well over a year. I bang away on them like crazy and they stay solid, other than the high E string gradually going a little flat probably due to excessive bending. This is easily fixed with a quick turn on the adjustment knob. I keep one at standard E tuning and the Ibanez at E flat.

We are in desperate need of a keys player, so it would be great if you could just move to DC..

Anyway, get one of these: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/FRTES--floyd-rose-frtes-trem-endus-tremolo-stabilizer?mrkgadid=3331288145&mrkgcl=28&mrkgen=gpla&mrkgbflag=0&mrkgcat=guitars&acctid=21700000001645388&dskeywordid=92700046938601027&lid=92700046938601027&ds_s_kwgid=58700005283398302&ds_s_inventory_feed_id=97700000007215323&dsproductgroupid=523156528048&product_id=FRTES&prodctry=US&prodlang=en&channel=online&storeid=&device=m&network=g&matchtype=&adpos=largenumber&locationid=9008168&creative=332063179836&targetid=aud-377243944973:pla-523156528048&campaignid=1708733954&awsearchcpc=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjKbI-LCy8wIVVAiICR0ouw56EAQYBSABEgLdp_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I have an early prototype with a much stronger spring but this thing works wonders. Stays in tune great and I can still use the trem as much as I want - downward AND upwards. Comes back right in tune every time

A fully floating trem is notoriously difficult to get “just right”

But once you do, there’s no going back.

As others suggested, either get it professionally set up … or another option is to “block it” … you put a shim between the body and the trem so it only goes down. A lot of people prefer them this way, as they don’t go sharp when you’re palm muting.

They’re also much easier to set up this way. And don’t go out of tune when you break a string.

Yep .. heard good things about those. And can’t complain about the $20 price tag!

Never had the need for one as I have the knack for setting Floyd’s up, no problems. Mind you, I’ve had them since my Kramer Focus 6000 back in the mid 80s.

Geez I’m old.

#986 2 years ago

Actually, mentioning that Kramer reminds me of a story …

Back in high school in the mid 80s, there were some dudes who played guitar in the hall every lunch time. They all played 60s Cream and British invasion stuff, all older music for some reason.

One day I had my gear in my car, so I asked if I could come and join in. Bought in my cream Focus 6000 and the 60w amp I had at the time, cranked it up pretty loud, turned the distortion to 10 and played Eruption. Lol. You should have seen their faces, they’d never heard anything that sounded like that. Their eyes looked like saucers. Haha!

Anyway - fast forward about 10 years and this guy calls me up and says he’s selling all his music gear, did I want to buy any of it?

So I trundled around there - and low and behold, the guy had a cream Focus 6000. I asked if it was my old one - but no, after seeing me play Eruption in the school hall that day, he went into the city and put a deposit on a new one just the same.

So I bought it - and it’s still on my wall now. One of only 4 guitars I kept when I sold up last year.

(The guitar on the left is my Jackson LTD88 which I bought new in 1990, that was my main stage guitar throughout my band days)

I’m not a tinkerer, so I hate setting up Floyd’s, but I have them on almost all my guitars! LOL. Did a side man gig in Japan a few years ago and the main guy had his tech set up my 2 main guitars for the whole week (tours in Japan are really short but good paydays). Absolutely perfect setups, I am still grateful

Would consider a trade for pinball machine.

#990 2 years ago

Probably not the place for this but I have a few guitars that I havent touched in years if anyone is interested and is local to me. I dont want to ship, PM if interested. No trades at this time, I have no space left for pins

Gibson SG menace: I bought new and still have the box and case candy. I had it professionally set up and took a few lessons and its been in the case since. $1000

ESP LTD (?) Horizon NTII: Nice guitar (brown) with original case $1000

Peavy (dont remember the model of hand) Needs set up and some TLC. I use this just to pluck on unplugged when watching TV sometimes, soft case. $300

Ibanez GIO Bass: No case, great starter bass I just hate the active pickups with the battery. $100

I have some others and amps/pedals/etc but I dont want to give up on learning to play totally just yet.

Nash double-bound Tele & Fender Custom Shop both heavy relics with chunky necks.

Well, not a guitar, but a really cool place to play it. My brother in law and I build this band shed in his backyard. Since this pic we added some things like DMX lighting in the ceiling. We also have lasers, a fog machine, and a projector that we can play videos up top on the exterior (cut off in the pic)

Going back to this again, I remembered that there is a whole "thing" with the Ibanez tremelo bridges. It could be that the Giger model has one of the troublesome ones. There were several iterations of these over the years, and some of them are despised by the Ibanez people. So it is worthwhile checking which one you have. This was one of the reasons I hunted for years to get my late 80s MIJ RG, that one has the Lo-Pro Edge which is supposed to be one of the better ones. And also the original Wizard neck.

I absolutely do not understand who the target market is. If I'm not mistaken, this is the same basic 90s Strat cut, neck, and bridge. Crusty old "vintage" guys by and large are not going to understand who Mark Levinson is. I do like the carbon fiber changes and the blue paint looks nice. The pickguard though!
