Quoted from Black_Knight:

My other expensive hobby.
At least I can use my trailer for both...

Car racing makes pinball seem very cheap.

The tyres for my race RX7 were $700 a pop. I can buy a whole pin for that and it lasts longer than a weekend.

I'm happy to say that my helmet has been hung up for now.

Quoted from pinworthy:

Nice ride RD, I've been seriously considering upgrading from my IS350 to an RCF

I bought an IS-F new in 2009, trouble free for 7 years (like the other two lexus' I've had) I wasn't really in the market for a new car, I was just going to drive the IS-F forever, it was a sweet car.

But a sweet deal came up on the RC-F Carbon, it was owned for only 3 months before the guy traded it for an Audi R8. I negotiated 40% off the new sticker price, and I grabbed it. It'll do me for a long time.

Yep, plenty of room back there.

Lots more than an RX7, that's for sure!

And maybe the group can identify this car for me?!! I have wanted to know what it is for about 30 years.
On a cruise in the early 80s down in Jamaica and Cozumel. Took this pic of a car in Jamaica, supported by some of the upstanding young locals. (And a pic of me enjoying the Cozumel sun...)

Yeah, its a Mark 3 Ford Cortina.

Quoted from ramegoom:

What people don't understand is that an opened-up exhaust can actually hurt performance. With a stock profile cam, there needs to be a certain amount of back-pressure in the exhaust. This keeps the combustible mix in the cylinder longer, instead of scavenging it out into the exhaust which happens with less back-pressure, at the top of the RPM scale.
Burning it in the exhaust increases EGT temperatures and reduces engine power.
SO
A bigger exhaust system isn't always better.

While this is particularly true for a carb/injected engine, Turbo engines (as in the Subaru mentioned) are a little different.

I'd be surprised if that exhaust is full 4" all the way from the turbo ... but with turbo rotary engines, we were going 3" all the way from the turbo, and bigger single turbos would go 3 1/2" all the way.

All this is dyno proven ... you just can't tack on any old exhaust or the engine will detonate and blow up. (Rotaries are infamous for detonating and blowing up when you get things wrong ...)

Turbo engines are running far higher exhaust temps than an NA engine (rotaries can throw out exhaust temps of 2000F. Crazy. You want that hot gas out of there asap.

http://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/maximum-exhaust-gas-temperature-before-trouble-657058/

For my older carby V8s, I always found around 2 1/2" with a cross over pipe was the sweet spot for a good torquey engine.

Ahhhhhhhhh the FD!! The most beautiful car that mazda ever designed in my opinion, next to the iconic 787B of course. Destined to be one of the next great collector cars along side the Supra, NSX, 300zxTT, etc. She looks naked without the factory wing on the back

The FD3S is probably the best of that bunch (except the NSX) but the rotary engine puts a lot of people off it.

I've owned 7 FDs I think. I sold my last one last year, I don't think there will be any more.

Quoted from RyanStl:

You know, I am 37 and your FD makes me drool more than a countach. Recently, I have realized I really want what was new 20 years ago and now obtainable.

That grey one, I built from a stolen and recovered wreck.

It had all custom tan leather (same colour as Aston Martin) R-Magic guards, R-Magic front, custom grey paint, 17x9s all round, rebuilt engine with 3mm seals, flowed de-sequentialised turbos, downpipe, 3" exhaust all the way, and Power FC driving it all. Cusco twin plate and 5 speed box.

It was a reliable 400hp every day, at only 1 bar boost. With FDs only weighing 1200kg, that's a fast street car.

If you really want to get the FD3S horn, and see more wings that Robby Ts Lotus, check out my old R-Magic race car.

If so, very sad result of globalization, I was always a bigger fan of the Falcon over the Holden's but what now will be on the Aussie supercar circuit?

Yep, all car manufacturing in Aussie is coming to an end. Toyota is closing its plant too.

They are still racing Commodores (the SS) and Falcons in the Aussie Supercars, along with Nissans and Mercedes Benz. Volvo were going good but they pulled out at the end of last year.

While I was more a "go fast" than a "go low" guy, I respect whatever people want to do to their cars. I know what work goes into custom cars, I've rebuilt a number of RX7s from the shell up.

The picture of the taco was because you said "slammed Taco". I presume you meant Tacoma? But a slammed taco is pretty funny.

If this is the last day of producing Holden's in Australia, what is going to happen now? Rebadged GMs being imported as Holden's? Worse yet, rebadged Isuzu's and Suzuki's?
Will Holden Dealerships, be taking down signage, to be replaced by Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac signage?

The Holden name will continue.

For many years, other GM cars have been sold in Aus/NZ under the Holden badge anyway. Opels from Europe and something GM from Korea.

The original Commodore (the Chevrolet SS) was based on an Opel.

The new imported Commodore is also an Opel, the Opel Insignia made in Europe.

Talking of new wheels, I got a deal on some a month back.

I saw an ad online for some used 20x10.5 which is what I was after. (With 20x9.5 for the front)

A car dealer had taken them off a used Lexus GS430 which he had imported. His rationale was that luxury car buyers just wanted stock wheels so he always removes them. I paid him $400 for them, and got them repowdercoated in satin black.

Turns out they are COR F1 Mesh wheels which are forged and made in Florida, of all places. They are crazy expensive at like $1500 USD per wheel!

They give the RCF a stealth look, and the satin black matches the carbon bonnet and roof.

And the dealer was correct - buyers always want the original rims so they are safely stored in my warehouse.

Quoted from MacLean:

Just thought I'd ask any corvette owners/enthusiasts here on Pinside Car Club for your opinion. It's been a dream of mine to own a corvette. I finally have the extra $ to now buy a new C7 series. I've been debating back & forth with buddies & on Corvette Forum trying to decide which model, the Z06 (650 hp) or the Grand Sport (450 hp). I'm going with the Arctic white with black rims & Aero ground effects package, similar to this photo.
Has anyone owned either model Z06 or GS in the C7 series? Thanks

If I was moving to the USA, I’d go with a
Corvette I reckon. The same as you ... white car, black rims (pretty much the same as my Lexus RCF you see above ...). White/Black just looks sweet on any car IMO. And I’ve seen a lot of Vettes with that scheme since I’ve been here, including one this morning. Fixed roof for me though, don’t like convertibles.

Of course, 450hp is way more HP than you’ll ever need, unless you plan on going to the track.

But the Z06 is a pretty sweet package ...

What’s the price difference?

rd

#1041 6 years ago
Quoted from Who-Dey:

The new Corvettes are Bad Ass, best looking Vettes ever made in my opinion!

I concur. By far. Except for the classic 60s ones.

The new generation Vette is the only Vette I’ve ever considered buying. Even the new interiors are ok, the old ones (80-2013) are pretty awful for an expensive car.

Yesterday there was a white/black Corvette next to a new red Camaro at the traffic lights.

The Camaro looked like a truck next to the sleek Corvette. All those other American “sports cars” are huge in comparison. Vettes are 3400lbs, Challengers for example are 4400lbs. My RCF fully loaded with all the extras Lexus’ have is 3700lb, which is way too heavy for a sports car really.

The only problem with Vettes is they only have 2 seats. That’s a bit challenging when you have 3 people and 2 little dogs to get around the place.

#1060 6 years ago
Quoted from MacLean:

The price difference with the Z07 aero ground effects package (wider cup tires, Brembo ceramic brakes) added to the Z06 puts it up about $35K over the Grand Sport. Any C7 without the aero package just looks incomplete. Still, I'm leaning towards the Z06 with Z07 package.
I think it's comparable to buying a new pin, whether it's "Pro" or "Premium" rarely do you ever regret buying a Premium.

The pin comparison is maybe a little off, because with a lot of the Stern pins the Pro is the way to go.

GOTG for example, why buy the more expensive models? You gain little except an emptier wallet.

With the Vette, if you sold the Z06 in say 4 years, do you get some of that $35k premium back when you sell it? By that, I mean if it’s $95,000 now and the other one is $60,000 now, in 4 years are they worth say $60,000 and say $35,000 respectively? Or does the cheaper model lose less value? I don’t know the market for used cars here. In NZ they halve in about 3 years.

That’d factor into my thinking if I was buying. But that’s me.

Hey, I’d probably take $50k with me and go buy this one. Cause I’m a tightass

Hearses make the ideal pin hauler.

My one fits 2x WPC/Stern end to end down the middle, no problems. The “tray” is 10ft long.

To get any more in there, you need to start dismantling.

I had 3 in there for the whole Route66 trip, plus 3 people, plus luggage, plus $1200 of pin parts under the floor.

I can’t see why you’d need a supercharger for it though. It’s pretty f**king fast out of the box. Unless you want to go racing. I did fit straight exhaust pipes to my old ISF (no rear mufflers) and it did sound super awesome.

Plus - being Japanese, and a Lexus, it never breaks down.
