Quoted from dmacy:Very cool and different. Never saw one before but nice that it's different. I guess it's akward for drive thru's! J/K!
Quoted from ralphwiggum:Nice... Hard to believe that car is 25 years old. Did you have to use a broker to get it here?
Anything under $2500 doesn’t require a broker. You can self-import with 3 simple forms. Bringing my Cappuccino in was simple.
I found a reputable exporter in Japan. With them they give you access to the auction listings in Japan. Once I found a car I was interested in, they would translate the auction sheet. If still interested they would go to the preview and provide a full report on the car. Then they would bid for you. If you win, they transport to port, load on a cargo ship, pay for insurance and provide all necessary paperwork. Once it arrives at port you have 3 pieces of paper to fill out and you can self import through customs. All in, the exporter fees were around $2200. Import duty is only 2.5%, plus an unloading fee of around $90 if I remember correctly. I had zero issues with the title and registration PA. All went through without issue. The exporter did a great job explaining the process the whole way through.
Quoted from robertmee:You suck....I've been looking for one for over a year. Missed one locally about 9 months ago. Did you go the import route?
Yes. I’m importing it. I just bought it at auction about two weeks ago. I imported my Cappuccino a year and a half ago and the process was quite easy.
Quoted from robertmee:They're awesome....Autozam AZ-1. Made by Mazda but I think has a Suzuki engine. Engines you cant kill. Smaller than a first gen MR2. I've been looking one for a few years but havent had the balls to import one.
657 cc, turbocharged 3 cylinder, 64hp. It’s the same engine in the AZ-1 and the Cappuccino. Both are between 1500 and 1600 lbs.
The import process has been extremely easy. I’ve now imported my Cappuccino using the informal entry process and the AZ-1 with the standard process which requires a broker. I’d definitely recommend taking the chance and importing one.

They are essentially street legal go karts that also have the allure of being extremely unique. I love small lightweight cars. I consider them a more modern take on early British sports cars but way more technology and near bulletproof reliability.
To get back a little on topic. My new summer car should arrive in a few weeks. Hopefully we aren't so locked down at point that I can't get to the port in Baltimore to pick it up. Unfortunately I have no pics with the gull-wing doors open.
1994 Suzuki Cara. 1 of 531 ever made.

Quoted from bob_e:I found this on the internet, Auto Zam AZ-1[quoted image]
Yes, the AZ-1 is basically the same car except ten times more were produced. I previously had a blue one.

[quoted image]
Do it. I've imported a Cappuccino, AZ-1 and Cara and I enjoyed the Cappuccino the most out of any of them.
Quoted from RyanStl:This is a totally innocent question with no ill intent. Why import a Lancer Evo? Does this have a spec you just can't get here without import? It looks cool, but I don't know enough to know if that is a kit on top of the Evo.
It’s a 1996 EVO IV. They didn’t import the EVO into the US until the 2003 EVO VIII. This has only been legal to import for less than a year and there are likely only a handful of them in the entire country right now.
