Seen tons of articles like it before. Long story short, driving manual is a lot more fun, especially with a sports car. I dont care about being 0.60 seconds faster in a 0 - 60, but what I would be interested to see is if two people both are driving manual, who hits it faster. The other scenario is simply holding down the gas pedal.

99% of the time driving the manual for being fun vs. the 1% where I might need the "faster" car just to mess around with someone on the road.

Quoted from Rager170:

I love the way they look, but if a sports car doesnt have a manual transmission, its a no buy for me.. Yes, I am one of those people haha.

Many of the Sports Cars that appear to have an automatic transmission. Might have a computer controlled manual transmission, with multiple disc clutch set ups. If the manufacture states that the transmission is an automatic, it will not be like the one in your grand dads Chevy, or Ford.

If you arent pushing down on a clutch pedal and moving a shifter, its not a manual.

Hey, im old school in that department. End of the day, to me, manual shifting is much more fun.

I have one of these 'automatic's, thanks to VW owning Porsche and the trickle down effect of engineering. While in my youth I loved my stick, my age and impatience has me in love with my DSG. Thanks to some creative tuning I can redline this thing just to the point of failure but w/o it. It's even got paddle shifters but I actually use the gear shifter in Sport mode when I want to drive it like I stole it, then flip it to D to sit in traffic. While mine is not nearly as quick as the PDK in the Porsche, it does just fine for the daily commuter race. It's so fun handling cars that are 2X what I paid and watching them in the rear view.
I'm not hating on the stick, just making a statement of opinion.

Given any budget, I'd buy back my old mans '63 356 for Sunday drives!

I will loath the day of the self driving reality.

Hell in today's world it is also a handy anti-theft device!!

I work on the company owners cars. He has an r8, a3 and an r32 that I've done exhausts, brake and suspension upgrades on etc. I hate the dsg in all 3 of these cars. I would never own 1 after having the experience with these. Plus all the extra parts that can and do go bad. Just my experience. I know most people love them.

I had my DSG service done at 90K and am thinking whether or not it will need it at 180K, the wife has a DSG and I did NOT service it, 160K with no issues... maybe just lucky?

My two sports cars have manuals and yes they are a lot of fun...but if I were to buy a C7 or C8 I would seriously consider the paddle shift auto.

Quoted from bob_e:

I'm sure you would consider it, since for the first time since the V8 engine was introduced to the Corvette in 1955, a manual transmission is not available. Chevrolet opted to make the C8 the first Corvette with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic.

haha, not me. Just couldnt do it. I know im probably in the minority but it really comes down to having fun driving and it just wont be the same without the shifter/clutch. I have had a manual car since I was 16 and I still buy Jeeps since they offer manual transmissions.

My goal isnt about having the fastest model of car like some others want. At this point of time, I have actually given up on wanting to own a future sports car and I am perfectly fine with that.

I was very similar in theory, but some cars I've owned just weren't available with a MT.

My current car was never offered with one, but I wanted to car and was able to give in on that. It's all about pros vs cons.

Does the need for a manual outweigh EVERYTHING else? (Rhetorical question, more statement)

For me, yes haha. I have no fun just simply pressing the gas pedal, regardless of the car. Just does nothing for me.

Quoted from Atari_Daze:

Yes they are. I don't think that has anything to do with it though. There's a tune on the r8 and a3 that helps a little but they still shift to slow and at inopportune times when driving around town. Since I would have to drive in sport mode anyway I don't want all the extra expense and maintenance with that setup.

To get back a little on topic. My new summer car should arrive in a few weeks. Hopefully we aren't so locked down at point that I can't get to the port in Baltimore to pick it up. Unfortunately I have no pics with the gull-wing doors open.

Not sure how I missed this thread over the years, but as a car guy, here is my contribution of my last 15 years or so... Sorry for the number of pics, but this is just a sampling:

my 67 Pontiac Firebird with a Pontiac 400... I restored it, kept it for a while and then sold it. Now somewhere in Washington state.

bird-1 (resized).jpgCL4 (resized).jpg0306081207a (resized).jpgCL5 (resized).jpgVentura 2010 - Bird (resized).jpg

my 67 Ford Fairlane GT with a Ford 390... Restored it, kept it for a while, sold it. Also somewhere in Washington state (different buyer).

Pre-restoration:

my 67 VW Manx II with a VW 1600cc... Bought it mostly restored. Did a little to it and used it as a tow vehicle behind our motorhome for camping. Was a blast but now sold once we bought my wife a 2018 Jeep Wrangler (it's still in California somewhere in the central coast area).

20180831_134835 (resized).jpg20180831_140852 (resized).jpg20180831_140811 (resized).jpg

My 69 Ford F350 crew cab (one of 850 made) with a Ford 460. 3 year frame off restoration. Kept for a while and sold it. Now in Pennsylvania somewhere. This thing was a BEAST and huge! 21 feet long and could pull a house!

Book cover (resized).jpg20170621_152232 (resized).jpg20170621_152238 (resized).jpg20170621_152307 (resized).jpg20170621_152254 (resized).jpg

My 31 Ford Vicky with a '55 Dodge Red Ram Hemi (270)... Current toy and have no plans to ever part with it, but who knows.. Maybe someday.

_32I7862-X2 (resized).jpg_32I7667-Edit-X2 (resized).jpg_32I7698-X2 (resized).jpg_32I7821-X2 (resized).jpg_32I7870-Edit-Edit-Edit-X2 (resized).jpg

Obviously, none of these were pin haulers... Well, I guess the F350 could have been, but I don't believe I ever had a pin back there. Plenty of other things, but no pins. My 2016 F150 does the pin hauling for me when I have bought local.

We tour the country (and Canada) racing blown alcohol funny cars. Pinball almost seems like an inexpensive vacation compared to the time and money these cars eat.

After a house flood and having kids,,, just life really. I haven’t touched this thing in ten years. I have had some free time after work lately with the covid crap going on. I finally got it running. I still have a lot to do to it but for whatever reason a spark has been lit under my ass to get it done finally. Will be lowering it, new trans, front lip, and a few other things soon.

I'll add some fuel to the wagering.

Mustang is 2.3L stock.
Camaro is 5.7L 390HP 400tourqe, Turbo350 w GV od and 3.73 rearend.

It would be a fun race: Camaro beats the Mustang for sure at the 60' but the Mustang would close the gap at the end of the 1/4 mile.
No losers here, both are fun cars to drive.

Shes back! After about three years of sitting at shops I finally drove my 1992 Nissan 300zx back home today. Holy smokes this thing hauls a lot of ass!

For those who didn't see my previous post, I purchased this in 2004 and sent it to Z1 motorsports in Georgia to have it converted to a Twin Turbo in 2017. Got it back about a year ago, sent it to a local body shop where its been sitting until today.

Going to upgrade the stereo and have the interior reconditioned next.
