Set up a small tank recently, now thinking of setting up a large one…

Quoted from frenchmarky:

Thanks, I'll check all this stuff out!.... Okay I ordered that stuff. I only have a small packet of water conditioner that came with the aquarium so needed a bottle of it anyway. I'm feeding him flake food, do I need to soak those first before feeding?

Just drop flake in the tank. Here is a betta care guide by a great youtube channel on FW fish.

Quoted from frenchmarky:

I don't know why but this rescued betta has gone totally down the toilet, figuratively speaking. Went from happy and swimming around and inquisitive and eating to hiding under the log and now for last two days just floats at the top looking like it's dead but it isn't and doesn't react to me anymore. Water temp is 81, ph measured mid-7, and the ammonia, nitrate and nitrite tests from the kit I bought all measure at zero end of color scale (it's only been in this brand new tank for about a week). Looks sicker than when I found it.

How big was the tank it was in before vs the tank its in now? Ive heard of some bettas being put in 20 gal + tanks and freaking out from the space. Once they were put into a 5 gal they were fine

Quoted from ScubaScott:

Routine water changes are important.

I havent done a water change in either of my tanks in over two years. Just top off the evaporation. I havent cleaned my filters either, both tanks are doin great

Quoted from BMore-Pinball:

I would say you are lucky
I would at least clean the filters -
just becuase fish are alive doesn't mean they are thriving

They have spawned multiple times, no illness to treat, plants are thriving so the tanks seem stable. I know its not for everyone but alot of times i think people mess with/clean too much. Just leave the tank alone and let it stabilize, the more you change parameters the more things can go sideways. I do have to clean the prefilter sponge on my hob filter but until the flow out of the other filters cuts too low I dont see a reason to clean anything
