This sounds pretty cool to me, so I'll give it a shot! I don't really have any friends that play pinball, but I do play a few machines near me and I post the highest scores on here.

I tried it out to add my LotR score, worked great! Added it to my Pinside profile and everything! I'll see if I can head down to the arcade soon and try and break my highscore, and see how well it works when I'm not online.

Or what about a knocker system? Give someone a knock instead of a thumbs up. You could even make the notification sound a knocker!
