One of the first that I know of is Williams TORCHY from 1947. Its a pre-flipper
pin and most of the action is from a pair of BIG electromagnets under the PF.
They are normally energized until the ball rolls over a small button in the
center of each electromagnet, which shuts it off briefly. This causes to ball
to shoot off in unpredictable directions. Really enjoy showing mine to folks
that only know post 1990's pins!
