Before I got into the hobby, if you had asked me if pinball games had magnets, I'd have responded with, "Yes all of them -- the ball is never really in your control. It's brutal how much control the designer has in pinball."

Well, now I know better...

Which pins have magnets under the PF to take away the player's control of the ball?

thanks!

The Addams family is one of them. It called the power it can be brutal

#3 10 years ago

Godzilla and GnR are a couple more.

#4 10 years ago

X-men excels above all others IMHO.
It can fling the ball between two magnets in complete opposite directions.
It can do so and have it make a ramp, or SDTM...

Even Seasoned players get bitten.

#5 10 years ago

There's alot of them. Pinsiders brainstorm!

TZ, Spiderman, and Star Trek is my contribution.

The magnets on my GnR have flung the ball up one of the ramps on a couple of occasions. It was amazing to watch. It is also pretty good at throwing the ball straight down the middle as well (not so amazing to watch).

#22 10 years ago

Nascar, I think Indy500,

#23 10 years ago

Also added Black Knight, Black Knight 2000, and Solar Fire.

#24 10 years ago

Twister and Gorgar of course.

Some people are adding games to the list that have Magna-Save or other user-controlled magnet features, which allow you to gain control of the ball. The OP is looking for games where magnets are used to add chaos to the ball.

WCS94 has a player activate magnet under the playfield in front of the flippers to try to "save" a ball going down the middle. It's effectiveness can be debated, LOL. There is also a magnet used to capture the ball on the mini-playfield ball lock area.

Jurassic Park, Demolition Man, Johnny Mnemonic,

Quoted from Street:

Nascar, I think Indy500,

I500 doesn't have any magnets but a spinning turbo ball lock and indy car diverter on the left.

demolition man ?

#35 10 years ago

Are we really counting linear induction uses as "magnets" in the vein of the OP's question? Nascar and the turbocharger on Getaway? No randomness at all, just a ball on a path.

I'll let WCS and Magna-Save games count, because it doesn't always work, and especially on WCS you take a gamble trying to use it. =P

Centaur/Centaur 2, Rollergames, Demo Man, Johnny Mnemonic, like Nascar and Getaway, are 100% controlled situations...not really any randomness or loss of player control.

Where is there a magnet in JP?

Haunted Cruise. The magnets are know as the Pranking Spirits.

Quick question:

Are there any pins where a magnet takes control of the ball away from the player in the upper playfield where there are upper playfield flippers? Or are all "chaos-creating" magnets in the lower playfield?

thanks,

X-Files and SWE both have magnets under the playfield.

None on the upper that I am aware of. Two of them- Jolly Park, and Twilight Zone use magnets in lieu of flippers to manipulate the ball.

An in JM? do you mean on the hand to pick up the ball? Not really a "ball diversion" magnet. But nice try. LOTR is in the same boat - don't deflect to ball to create chaos.

"chaos-creating" magnets

This is what I assumed you were talking about when you started this thread. Not magnets that stop the ball, but ones that re-direct it. Which is why I mentioned Godzilla. I have never seen the kind of action on another machine that Godzilla has. It is total mayhem.

#44 10 years ago

One of the first that I know of is Williams TORCHY from 1947. Its a pre-flipper
pin and most of the action is from a pair of BIG electromagnets under the PF.
They are normally energized until the ball rolls over a small button in the
center of each electromagnet, which shuts it off briefly. This causes to ball
to shoot off in unpredictable directions. Really enjoy showing mine to folks
that only know post 1990's pins!

Wow! you got me there! I never saw this one!

Makes you think there are a lot of great toys in old games that can be brought back!

The kickers on my 1935 Peo All American Football are magnetic....

i think the OP has highlighted what he wanted to know.

under the playfield magnets. i.e. TAF LAH perfect examples amongst quite a few others.

the cryoclaw has nothing to do with under the pf magnets.

LAH has three magnets in the middle of the playfeild and with 6 ball multiball its CRAZY!

No kidding. I seen multiple times the magnets make the ball do a U or even a O before whipping it right down the middle.

#50 10 years ago

What I find interesting is that the large majority of games listed (44 of 52) were made in 1990 or later-- and some of those 8 before 1990 are ones where the magnet(s) is/are completely under player control, like Black Knight and Black Knight 2000.
