molex issue (resized).jpg
#1 6 years ago

So I've noticed over the past few weeks that some lights in my T2 weren't lighting up. I went under the hood, traced some wires, swapped lights around, and couldn't find the problem. Then I pulled the molex connector off and two of the pins were stuck in the connector. D'oh, well at least that explains it.

So is this something that I can solder back together? Well, I know *I* can't yet, because I haven't learned how to solder yet, but it's on my list to learn... However I've read that newbies shouldn't even attempt boards, but I don't know if this is considered a circuit board since there's no chips... Reading this thread makes it sound like it's easy (the same part I'm having issues with): https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/need-to-find-lamp-assembly-for-t2-playfield

They recommend PinWiki.com (looks like a good resource that I haven't seen before), but I can't find the specific section they were referring to.

If I decided I can't do it myself or I screw it up trying, does anyone know if this part is available anywhere?

Time to learn. Youtube is littered with short how to videos. Practice at a table with some wire. Learn to flow solder. Then move onto the board. Pull the pins out of the connector and stick back in the board. Reflow the solder at the base of the pin next to the board.

You'll do fine. This is a simple fix.

I noticed you are in Minneapolis. I'm in Hopkins - SS Billiards. Noon to midnight everyday ( 2pm to 10pm on Sunday )

Bring it in. I'll learn ya how.

That's what I thought, just wanted to confirm. And I'll take you up on that! (I'm the one that referred my wife's company to your place and they loved it, but I haven't had a chance to get out there yet! ).

If you interested in learning how to make small board repairs this would be an excellent oportunity and a good starter. Go to Lowes and pick up a Weller soldering Iron and some solder. Go to YouTube and watch a couple of beginner soldering videos. This is a real simple fix
You should be able to heat up those two pads and each pin and push the pins back in It will be kinda fun to fix that not to mention self gratifying.

I bought a nice Weller iron a few months ago, but haven't had a chance to use it. Just have to find the time to take it out and learn. Thanks for the positive comments!

Just to close the loop on this in case people search it in the future - I went to SS Billiards a couple of weeks ago, and Lloyd was a great teacher! Turns out it was easier than I expected, and the biggest issue was me getting through the fear of breaking it. Thanks, LTG, you rock!
