    I was always under the impression that you paid your version of sales tax for taking things from US into Canada and that this was not really a duty type tax. What do you call it up there -- HST?
    Anyways, those of us "south of the border" are also supposed to pay sales taxes. If not collected directly then we are supposed to voluntarily pay a "consumers use tax" at the end of the year (most states). Most people don't pay this consumers use tax (I do for fear of being audited).
