I didn't play in the match play tournament, I view these kind of things as distractions when I'm focusing on a main tournament. Thinking about it for even 10 seconds - free play floor games of uncontrollable QC, 100 people - it was pretty clear it would be some kind of a shitshow.
But I do think it should hang around - some friends who are pretty much amateurs did it and it was PERFECT for them, an easy to understand format that was fun for beginners - nothing like the main tournament. With some tweaks I think it can work much better. Pinburgh gives each round almost 2 hours, so I think it was kind of unrealistic to expect they could go through rounds in 30 minutes or whatever they forecast at first. And yeah EBs have to go as well.
Not for me but a good thing to do I think. I do wonder about the top players who think they need to play in something like this, which is clearly geared toward beginners, but some folks just can't get enough.
