I have to ask: what is a tournament grade game? Is there a list or is it a condition of the game? I have seen games with toppers saying Tournament Game, but was not sure what that meant. Enlighten me please.
Quoted from Tophervette:I have to ask: what is a tournament grade game? Is there a list or is it a condition of the game? I have seen games with toppers saying Tournament Game, but was not sure what that meant. Enlighten me please.
Stern Tournament topper is not what they mean (that just means it has a TOPS kit in it, where locations can run a tournament and the game keeps track of top
scores for you)
Basically they're looking for games where everything works well, no weak flippers, all lights working, tilt working correctly (a must), etc. Hopefully freshly shopped.
It won't matter in the end, because one thing that is a truism is that players will complain about the games' condition anyway, when we all know it's because the voltage available at the show is shiity, so hopefully, your game works well with between 92v-108v.
Some games don't lend themselves well to tournaments as they play very LONG. What you want is a short to medium long playing game. Expect the organizers to pull/move posts, etc. to try and make the games play shorter (not needed with games like Stars IMO, but they pull the center post anyway)
I helped run the tournament at Allentown back in the late 2008-2013 or so era, most of the time what we got for games that weren't from mine and Brian's collection arrived at the show last minute, and were never working 100%. We (me, really) had to fix them to even make them play. It's one of the most difficult things to do is get people to bring good games for a tournament, because although you get in for free, if you're trying to sell your game, prospective buyers can't really play it, and you can't remove it until the end of the show - a lot of people bring games for the freeplay area because they honestly want everyone to be able to play them.
I am glad that Ivan got someone to run a tournament at the show, because there are definitely a lot of players that won't go to a show unless there's a tournament attached. It's a certain segment of the pin scene that does it, and it's significant to get the extra attendance. Luckily a lot of tournament players are also collectors and some of them like zacaj always bring a game or 2 for the tournament.
There are a couple of games that due to randomness (that hasn't been patched out via custom roms) or some game breaking feature don't lend themselves well to tournament play.... you want an even playing field so everyone that plays the game correctly will place well in the tournament, not one person getting 1st place because they got the 'correct' random award, and everyone else didn't.
