At my son’s Pinewood Derby they have a race for parents and siblings. Here’s my entry. You can see where a man’s heart lies by the kind of derby car he makes. The gold and red car is my son’s. I applied the stencils and he sprayed the paint.

Very nice. Don't forget to maximize your weight.

Was thinking the same thing... might go quicker with the wider side of the flipper in the front.

Tip from my youth: I'd hollow out an area on the bottom of the car, then put it on a scale and add lead weights until it was _just_ shy of the legal limit, then epoxy the weights in place.

Max weight, low center of gravity - 3 years, 3 blue ribbons.

Also, polish the shit out of the nails/wheel axles. My dad and I used to put them in a drill and wet polish them with strips of fabric.

Love it! Takes me back to my Cub Scout days when I actually won the Pinewood Derby. My car was shaped like an open-wheeled racecar - very streamlined, low center of gravity, perfect weight, etc. I remember doing special things like hollowing out the bottom of the car and filling it with lead, rounding off all the square edges, polishing like crazy, modifying the wheels to have better grip and spinning like well-lubed bearings, etc. However, if I recall accurately, my dad probably performed 99% of the build. Either way - I won and the trophy was mine!!!!

The next year, my dad let me do the car 100% by myself. Even so, I still came if 4th place.

Thanks. It’s 4.99 oz. I was 1/2 oz heavy and had to drill a bunch of lead out. My son’s car took 2nd for the scouts and the flipper car was the fastest overall.

Great car, always loved the Pinewood Derby. Wish I would have thought of a flipper!
We still have all our kids cars on display. Heres a few of them...Frankensteins table, skateboard and coffinmobile.

That’s awesome! Great ideas. I’m already brainstorming for next year.

I think the adults had more fun making some of their own than the kids did. Here's my Cheese Wedge design from back in the 80's. With a shortened body I think I stuffed a lot of the weights in the back over the axle as well as underneath.

I love the cheese wedge! I am from Wisconsin doncha know. I was thinking of making next year a little easier and making a “doorstop” car.
