I think the presence of the HD LCD transforms the nature of pinball at least as much as timed play for ticket reward, because of the spectator entertainment effect.
Pinball has always had entertainment in watching others play, but there is a generational component to that entertainment that I don't think resonates as well with the current youth. Not that they don't like pinball (once exposed), just not as much without more bells and whistles. I think the LCD provides that in spades. Like a videogame, which rewards persistent play with new images/sound, the LCD is more Pavlovian than the DMD. Add tickets and whoa, you've got something. And the LCD is able to hold its own versus a whole loud roomful of bright, loud, redemption machines, including coin pushers. The marquee effect of that large LCD can't be overstated.
But time and dollars will tell the true story eventually.
