Hey All. I purchased a PinBot a week ago and finally moved it down to the basement today. It was working before I moved it down. To get it downstairs, I had to unhook all the plugs and remove the head. I put tape on all the plugs with numbers. Stupid me, I connected a black plug to a white one, that was the same size. When I turned on the machine, I heard loud buzz and then a pop. I quickly turned it off and found my error. I fixed all the plugs and turned it on again. Now, only the GI comes on. Nothing else. I checked all the fuses and they appear to be good. The pop appeared to come from under the playfield. Nothing appears burned and the two fuses I found there were fine. How screwed am I? Any help on where to start would be greatly appreciated.

Very screwed. What does the 3 leds on the CPU board do when the power is on?

#3 6 years ago

Thanks GRUMPY for responding. Only one led on.

That is what I was afraid of. You have done considerable damage to the CPU board. Have you ever done board work? If not this is not one to learn on.

Ouch ! Feel for you buddy !

GRUMPY I've done some board work, but not alot. Any idea how much is blown? Do a I need a whole new CPU? Thanks.

I'd much rather fix a System 11 board damaged this way than one with a lot of battery damage!

Do you know specifically what plugs you switched? Knowing that will help determine what when where and how bad the damage may be. It will also make it easier to repair. It may be a pain and disappointing but these boards can be fixed.

Below are pictures of the two plugs. I know, colors didn’t match. Thought my masking tape numbers did.

Don't feel so bad about the colors. Apparently some earlier games didn't always use matching colors for the connector shells and it is a good ideal to look at the wires in the shells to help confirm a match.

You said you heard something pop under neath the playfield. Have you carefully inspected all wiring, boards, etc to see if you can find out what that was? Also, have you pulled and checked all the fuses?

All looks normal and fuses are good.

Could the pop sound come from the speaker? Just a guess.

Nope.

Unfortunately it could be most of the IC chips on the board or only a few. There are a couple threads where others have made this mistake. The 5v line gets overvoltage and pop!!

It may be more cost effective to find a replacement

Thanks All. I have removed the board and have it packed up and ready to ship to be looked at.

Hey all, update time. I sent my board off to grumpy to get repaired. Turned out grumpy had a spare set of system 11 boards he was willing to part with, so he made the trip to Zimmerman to drop off the boards and play some space station. Thanks Grumpy! While he was here we put the system 11 board in with the space station roms (came with board). Found out my sound board is bad. Ordered parts and roms. Today I tried getting sound board working and was not successful. Decided to try Pinbot sound rom in the space station sound board. It worked! So, time to swap mpu roms. Did them one at a time, very carefully, and put the mpu back in. Didn’t plug in the play field. Turned on the machine and got the result in the pictures below. Any thoughts? I didn’t install U19 on sound board because I read wasn’t needed and it wasn’t on my original board.

Hard time read but it looks as if u-26 is in u-27 spot.

#17 6 years ago

Thanks GRUMPY Doh!

#18 6 years ago

Does it work better now? Oh and good to know that the later version sound board (sytsem 11 B) works in the older system 11 A game, I really didn't think the older sound rom would work in the newer board.

#19 6 years ago

I didn’t get to swap the roms yet. Hopefully Tuesday night.

Pinbot has been brought back to life! Hopefully GRUMPY can repair my original board. Now on to the rebuild. Thanks grumpy for your help.
