Quoted from Jaeg:

I'll be interested in your review on the titanium Oris. I went with the titanium Aquis over the 400 movement.

I'll probably get a full review up on my wristwatch YouTube later this week, unless I get too busy at work. No earlier than Wednesday though, I want a few more days wearing it before I finalize my thoughts.

My son (23) has become interested in watches. On his very limited budget he has combined this with interest in Eastern Europe/ Russia.

This arrived yesterday.
Apparently, it is styled after a wall clock at a well known athletic facility in Pripyat, Ukraine.

And now for something completely different, my limited edition Wu Tang Casio G-Shock showed up yesterday. Check out the hidden Wu Tang when illuminated! Only for special occasions of course…

I've accumulated some watches over time (sound familiar?) and I was wondering what you do with respect to servicing your mechanical watches? Of course, taking the cost of the watch into consideration there are a number of options. For divers, do you really do more than desk diving and how critical is the water resistance, etc. Thoughts?

#2458 11 months ago

I have used this guy (below) before with very good success. You might want to give him a try. As for diving with my watches, I used to regularly swim/snorkel with my 30 year old Rolex Datejust, until I was entering the sea one time and saw that the winder had popped out and wouldn't screw back down. Close call! I sent it in and Mark (below) fixed it for me. His advice was never to take your Rolex or other expensive watch into the water. He said that although a watch in good condition SHOULD be water resistant to the approved depth, and he tests the watch to assure it is within specs, the consequences if something goes wrong can be significant. He talked about watches that he received for repair where the internals experienced significant rust only a few days after immersion in salt water. He said repair costs can get extremely high if the movement is partially or fully damaged. His bottom line is don't risk it - buy a less expensive dive watch to swim in and save the Submariner for other activities. I guess if I had baller money, or was a bit of a gambler, I might just go ahead and dive with it anyway. But since my funds are somewhat limited, I take it off when going in the water.

On a side note, I'm trying to decide what a good relatively inexpensive (< $500) dive watch might be. Giving thought to the Luminox watches. Anybody got a better choice?
Rolex watch repair
All Rolex watches are completely disassembled, ultrasonically cleaned, reassembled properly oiled and timed. Cases are polished; crystals and bands are buffed. Case tube, crown and back gaskets are replaced. I pressure test each Rolex repair to check for water resistance. I use genuine Rolex parts where needed.

Rolex overhaul cost is $200 plus the return shipping.Delivery time is usually 3 weeks.

Why spend $700-$800 and wait 2 months for the factory to service your watch. I can do the overhaul and have your watch back on your wrist looking and running properly in half the time.

 Mechanical Watch Repair
I can work on just about any type of good mechanical watch:
Bulova, Tudor, Seiko,Omega, Rolex, Hamilton, Gruen, Tissot etc...
Call or email anytime for an estimate on your watch repair.

Hard to beat Seiko for a less expensive dive watch. They've been building reliable dive watches for nearly 60 years.

I service if I notice the watch is running notably out of spec or if something is broken. Most watch companies give recommended service intervals that are, in my opinion, far too frequent (and many watch companies make good money servicing their own watches and that's an incentive to promote frequent servicing).

High water resistance does matter a lot if you are going into the water frequently with your watches. It has to do with the water pressure the watch experiences. Worrying about surviving rain/splashes isn't a big deal for most watches. Submersion is another factor. It is recommended to have a watch you wear in the water checked regularly. Lots of watch shops can do a pressure test for you. The repair on the water proofing is gaskets it in and of itself is not an expensive fix.

Independent watchmakers are excellent for a lot of servicing and are cheaper than going through the manufacturer. However, this does depend on the movement. Ultra-complicated watches with in-house movements I think should go through the manufacturer for a variety of reasons. However, most sports watches can be handled by an independent even if the movement is in-house. They should be able to inform you if you need some sort of part they can't get.

I believe they say they will, but the half life is something like 12 years, and it will take about 20 I believe until they fully dim, so you have some time.

I have the Trainmaster Moonphase, and the whole moon is yellow tritium tubes. Very legible at night.

This damn thread. Had to dive in and order two more. Should be here next week:

Kuoe Royal Smith 90-008

Kuoe is an EXCELLENT microbrand. I still have the Kuoe Old Smith 90-002 field watch in green. It has slowly made its way into my top five. Looking forward to seeing their new flagship in person. The applied Breguet-style numerals and parchment dial is a killer combo.

Seiko Rowing Blazers collaboration SRPJ71

I previously knew nothing of this Rowing Blazers + Seiko collab... but after taking one look at the email blast I thought, sure, why not. I enjoyed wearing my "DressKX" SRPE53 in blue so let's try something fun. Glad I did... it sold out in minutes!

I’ve been waiting for somebody to post this! I’d been refreshing the page for months waiting for it to come back in stock, but then once it did I couldn’t bring myself to buy YET ANOTHER watch. It’s pretty cool though. I don’t have any other movements like that. How do you like it?

#2478 11 months ago

Some great watches in this thread. Guess I’ll throw in my 2. I bought the Omega 24 years ago and I bought the Seiko last week.

My family wanted to know why I bought the same watch again. Damn those blue dials.

I tried an Uncle bracelet on a Speedmaster. I’d heard great things from people using them on Seikos. On an Omega, I couldn’t have been more disappointed. Poor quality. Uncomfortable. And for what it cost, I felt it was actually overpriced.

Today I’m wearing a Sicura Full Lever. On a Breitling calfskin strap. Looks like a datejust. 1/70th the price! These are great for the money.

Aw man.... that sucks. It's a helluva lot better than the stock Seiko bracelet, that's for sure. Just happy to find a good option since there are such limited options for curved endlinks on the Dress KX.

That’s what was so shocking is the Uncles for the Seikos are second to none. I knew it wouldn’t be anywhere near a factory Omega bracelet, but to put it into perspective, think about the difference in quality between a wedge head and a Zizzle machine

It’s the second Rowing Blazers + Seiko collaboration in the SRPE series. Very cool crossover. The DressKX date wheel always bothered me when it didn’t match the dial (which would be most of them)… but the RB collabs got this little detail right on the black and white dials.

Random Rob covered the black variant from the 2022 collab here (mine is from the 2023 set):
