Wow! Congratulations! One of my dream watches!

#2302 1 year ago

Anyone here ever trade a pin for a watch? I’d be interested in a swap for a nice Rolex! Don’t think there would be much interest here, but if so contact me direct.

#2303 1 year ago

I bought my Datejust at a pawn shop in Detroit for $2200 I’m sure you could do the same.

I recently tried the Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 silver dial as a potential sporty/dressy “do it all” piece, but thought the 40mm case wore a bit too large, only average quality sunburst effect, weird 21mm lug length, and didn’t care for the bracelet.

During the return, an online acquaintance recommended another Tissot which I hadn’t seen before (and isn’t even listed on the US Tissot website)… the Tissot Courturier.

A8F41E57-9F69-4E2D-BD4F-46B3B802C717 (resized).jpegA8F41E57-9F69-4E2D-BD4F-46B3B802C717 (resized).jpeg

Jomashop was running a sale so I thought… why not? 39mm case, framed full date/day, sub-11mm thickness, and Powermatic 80 movement (!) for only $250? Dude.

The included 22mm steel bracelet is quite attractive, but unfortunately has too many sharp edges and doesn’t articulate well. Since I tend to wear straps rather tight, it was a no-go… so it has been fitted to a Colareb leather strap.

Great everyday piece. It’s always fun to find an oddball choice which punches a couple tiers above its expectations. Thrill of the hunt.

New straps arrived.

Quoted from Frippertron:

Have any of you guys checked out the new CW bel canto? This thing is unbelievable and under 4K. It has a chiming hour and is the best price point for such a complication.[quoted image]

I missed out on the limited editions but have one of the new colors on order which should be out sometime next year. I really like what CW stands for and the quality of their pieces.

You can see my C60 Tide in this pic. Apologies for the bad lighting.

I've been around here a couple years and somehow never knew there was a Pinball and Watches thread! Great stuff, some beautiful pieces in here. Rolex and Panerai make up the majority of my collection but I also like IWC, Sinn and a couple others.

The colorway on this IWC Petronas makes me want a Bond LE to match!

Love this color

Me too! It uses a very slick quick-change strap system, even easier than Panerai's push-button quick-change setup. Came with a second strap that turns it into a more dressy (less "fun"/flashy) than the bright color rubber strap. Makes it a pretty flexible watch.

Ti case so it wears really nice for a watch of its size.

Question for all of you watch aficionados. I’m wanting to buy my dream watch which is a Rolex. I’ve been looking for the GMT-Master II Oyster, 40MM in oystersteel. Every dealer I’ve looked at wouldn’t put me on a list unless I lived in that respective state. And the local Chicago authorized dealers will only put you on a list of you buy “other jewelry” which I just found out today was a banable offense by Rolex, S it goes against there policy. Does Anyone know how a pleb like me can get one? I’ve included a picture of the exact one I want.

Pawn Shop! Most dealers have one or two you just have to show them cash. When I got my Daytona years ago. I asked how much they were they told me with a giggle. I grabbed the cash walked in again they walked past me like I wasn’t there. I said to the lady I spoke with earlier that I wanted it. She said sorry sir you have to wait to get one. I pulled the cash out put it on the glass and one suddenly appeared.

Buy from a trusted, highly reputable Grey dealer (DavidSW, Bobswatches, Crown & Caliber, etc). You’ll pay a premium above retail, but prices have been slowly inching towards retail in the last few months. It’s likely that premium you’ll pay would be similar to what an authorized dealer would encourage you to spend on junk jewelry to “build a relationship” and be considered to purchase that watch at retail. Nobody should have to lick an employee’s ass just to buy a watch, and there’s no guarantee you would even get a call. Your time, dignity and effort are worth something and life is short, so it’s justifiable to buy grey in my opinion. I did it with my Submariner and while I hate the way Rolex does business, unfortunately those are the breaks.

Ref Rolex:
Many are losing their AD status for getting caught with their poor practices including selling direct to Grey Market.
Sold my Daytona + Hulk last year as I needed funds for my mother..... another story.........
I purchased years ago when you could buy them in store if they were in the window.

I have my name down for two new models.....

Find a reputable AD in or around your area.
ADs don't stock any watches or if they do they are generally exhibition only for sizing etc...

Rolex are trying to protect the brand and stop flippers...lol!!
There is NO list per se.
They have criteria that puts you in a better position than other Joes
My advice?
Make an appointment with your AD in advance.
Tell them you have a special occassion. 50th, aniversary etc....

Go with your wife and try on different models.
Put your name down for a 36mm Datejust or similar for her and a sports model for yourself.
Have some knowledge on the brand.
Be polite and likeable.
Trust me, you will have much better chance if you opt for a bi-metal - gold/steel on any model, register your interest on these.

You will be paying more than your average Joe who generally asks for a steel sports model which retails low and the dealer gets peeps going in all the time asking for these.

The AD only gets 30% on any watch sold.
Be patient and wait, you don't need to pay more than retail.
Play the game.

You can have it verified by a Rolex Authorized Dealer but don’t expect them to give you a warm reception if you just want to use them to authenticate a watch. eBay has an authenticity guarantee where your purchase is sent by the seller to an independent third party authenticator after sale. If it fails, you get your money back. I’ve used it twice with no problems. Also, in my experience, if the watch does not include box and papers (which can still be forged btw), some dealers will offer their own COA and appraisal upon request. Remember, it’s the dealers reputation on the line. So always be confident in the dealer/seller first.

-Doug

#2334 1 year ago

Very much a case where "buy the seller" is a good rule when buying second hand. I only buy nicer watches from people I have past experience with or who have an extremely good, long-running reputation. I'd rather have confidence in the purchase than pinch the $ when it comes to watches, personally.

And as a registered cheap bastard, that pains me to type out.

I know that taste is personal but if it were me I would just go straight past the Rolex store and to the Breguet dealer to buy a Type XXI. Added benefit is you won't have the same watch as your neighbor.

I think they take your name and contact information.

I’m betting they do get items to sell but it might be like you ordered it a year ago and whenever it arrives it is sold to you.

Rolex does make 1 million units a year so I’m sure they’re always selling just not inventory for walk in people. Like Stern was operating at a backlog.

I got DP and Elvira premium (will be in February) that doesn’t mean you can walk in and buy an Elvira or DP. I was on a list for most of a year.

Man, they really do. I have an old t-dial Speedmaster and an IWC chrono that both have that kind of creamy patina on the indices. This one's deeper than the others but something special about those old watches.

Because the demand for Rolex sports watches is so high, ADs keep them aside for high valued customers who have a history of buying large sums from them. There’s lots of articles and videos explaining this. There are just certain brands and watches that you can’t just go in and buy, and Rolex is one.

forget buying a Rolex from an AD. Just not going to happen. Stupid state of affairs but look at the grey market e.g. Chrono24. Expect to pay at least double MSRP.

If patient, you should be able to find a NIB Explorer II Polar between 13 and 14k.
