Here’s an Armitron digital chronograph circa 1977. It was a birthday gift from my sister. Suffice it to say, it’s a special watch to me.
[quoted image]

You inspired me to put a new battery in my watch and get it going again after covid. Paired with my Members Only jacket I'm ready for the Flock of Seagulls concert tonight!

Quoted from NicoVolta:

Hey Therm... good bit of info there. Not sure if this is known in Pinball World or not, but my uncle is the original inventor of the LED watch (George Thiess, pictured below). He built the first prototypes from classified military transistors which could operate at 1 watt, partly due to his time in the Korean War in the US Air Force. He also built electric car prototypes well ahead of the curve which ran on sea water (magnesium charged the batteries).
Uncle George is an EXTREMELY ambitious fellow and is still with us today inventing things. When I visited his home around 2004, he had built an above-ground tornado shelter inside and ACTUALLY USED IT when the house took A DIRECT TORNADO HIT only a few years later. Just an incredible guy, all-round.
[quoted image]
His inspiration to make the LED watch came from the Bulova Accutron. He thought, "Hey! That isn't an ELECTRONIC watch! It's an ELECTRO-MECHANICAL watch. I'll show them a REAL electronic watch!"
...and of course the rest was history.

Great story, thanks for posting!

I think that mid 60s-mid 70s period was one of the most interesting in the history of watchmaking. I always wondered how those traditional watchmakers who became early adopters of quartz and digital calibers (Hamilton and Bulova in particular) failed to appreciate that these new technologies would ultimately devour their companies? Those old well-loved Pulsars eventually killed Hamilton and forced them to sell out to Swatch; if I remember correctly it ultimately boiled down to making the blunder (only a blunder in hindsight I guess, how were they supposed to know?) of ordering large quantities of ICs around a year prior to launching the watches on the market, then getting caught flat-footed with inventory they severely overpaid for when the prices of the chips dramatically decreased (possibly the first corporate casualty of Moore's Law).

That's pretty cool looking. Looks like it's limited to 3000 pieces. The pictures I'm seeing has more of a blue face. Is yours different or does it just change color based on lighting?

Lighting makes all the difference. The facets are like little blue mirrors… the more light, the better. Provides an array of different looks depending upon the environment. Love it. Best thing since the Grand Seiko SBGH267 which I sadly missed the opportunity to acquire.

Another arrival this week!

You don’t often see much about Kuoe (Japanese microbrand)… and that is a shame.

Nothing fancy, but perfectly understated at 35mm. The love is real.

Got my 17.09 back last week after MING got the movement upgraded to solve their independent hour issue. They provided free strap codes to those impacted given how long it took, so I ordered a white rubber strap to give it a more casual look than the default calf strap provides (their flared lugs require a non-traditional strap to look right).

Close. Prices are crazy right now. Same watch could have been bought for 32k last year. Now 45k plus. Let's just say I wish I bought last year.

NTH Thresher dive watch.

Quoted from HeyYouSir:

NTH Thresher dive watch.

I owned a "dive" watch once, not an NTH. Don't recall the brand but the springs in the band clips were ferrous. NOT the ideal metal for salt water!
Needless to say it was returned after the band broke, luckily I was on land when it failed. I did get a full refund, Costco has a great return policy.

That is a very nice looking timepiece you have there!

[quoted image]

Truth be told, I love this watch. Unfortunately, the NTH branded metal bracelet/clasp that came with it is disappointing. You’ll notice in my pic that it is on a far superior Hirsch Liberty waterproof leather strap. Longer term I plan to buy a Strapcode metal bracelet as a bracelet replacement option for this dive watch.

I've always found the Coke bezel insert interesting but I guess most people prefer the Pepsi.

I looked into that line when it was announced. Was tempted by the Ryu.

I got a Marathon field watch yesterday. Did not expect it to arrive until next week. My first field watch and first to use tritium tubes.

My wife got me this kit for Christmas. You assemble an automatic watch, essentially putting a dial and hands on the movement and putting everything in a case. This was my first time doing something like that, and it was harder than it looked. I messed up a couple of times and bent and scratched the dial. My fault for hurrying through a step and not watching the full video. Eventually, I got everything together. You can only see my errors with a loop, which the kit was nice enough to come with. The end watch is ok. It uses a Miyota movement. It was good to get some hands on practice using these tools. Like any hobby, you make a bunch of mistakes at first.

Yeah it can be tricky. I have not tried one of those kit watches but I have bought several manual winds off eBay to take apart, clean and service, and re-assemble. That last step is easily the worst, so easy to damage a pivot or bend a spring. I have destroyed several parts in my learning process. Feels good when it comes together though.

A peasant timepiece compared to most of the watches in this thread, but this is my citizen. I have been into watches since I was a kid. It’s kind of like pinball, a machine under glass. Next will probably be an older citizen navihawk or sturmanskie Gagarin.

While it is named the 300t the actual dive rating is 1200m! (Approximately 4000ft).
Decorated Swiss automatic movement
