Bally Big Day playfield rebuild w/Vario “Empire” microbrand watch. Guilloche dial, Art Deco numerals, and thermally blued hands.

Makes me wish there were more Deco-themed pins produced during the 60’s & 70’s.

Nice classic Bauhaus design.

Just ordered one of these for the wife. It’s shipping from Singapore so I don’t think it will arrive for a couple of weeks.
It’s NOS so the watch is as close to perfect as you can find in 2020.

I really hope I didn't pick up another hobby. I've been wearing an Apple Watch for a couple years now, and I absolutely cannot stand the distraction it brings any longer. It's a great fitness tracker, but a poor everyday watch otherwise (unless you like getting tapped on your wrist constantly for email/text/sitting on the couch too long notifications).

Anyway, got a nice deal on this Orient Ray II, but decided to give it a more "spritely" feel with a NATO strap.

Heyyyy pretty much an identical build there, except the dial. Pretty cool twist on it!

Bond strap and Orient Ray = already off to the races! Sorry if this becomes a new hobby, but yanno, it's a good one. Time is universal. Why not give it some consideration instead of gluing your phone to your wrist? I think the phone has taken enough of my brain... it won't get my arm too.

Have you been watching Just One More Watch, Terry Baldassarre, Urban Gentry, Just The Watch, and other YouTubers? Some really fun ones out there! Of course, for sheer horological YouTube porn, nothing beats Watchfinder & Co.

Quoted from NicoVolta:

You said it! Enough is enough for me. I’ll wear it on my runs and at the gym, but I’m also tired of the cheapish “spy kid” look of the Apple Watch too. If I’m gonna be locked in my house, my wrist might as well look as good as it can be.

I’ve been watching a TON of YouTube videos, which really got me in the zone. I have another (simple field watch for work) coming in the mail, and I have one other watch coming in a couple months from the “motherland.” Couldn’t resist ‘diving‘ into a watch fit for Gorbie (hint hint).

#1863 4 years ago

OOF... if you're watching the vids, it's too late. But this is a cool hobby. You'll enjoy the ride.

Beware of buying any watches from India, Russia, or especially Ukraine. They all cobble together barely-working parts, print new dials on laser printers, and sell them as vintage. Nearly all of them are frankenwatches... had to press one Ukrainian seller via PayPal to get my money back. Hands fell off one, movement was rusted on the other.

#1864 4 years ago

The Russian watch I ordered is a simple Vostok Amphibia, new, and from a reputable dealer, but good to know! I’ll keep that in mind moving forward. For $75, I couldn’t resist grabbing a sweet scuba dude Amphibia. Probably gonna very ironically slap on a NATO band, because why not. I love the quirky history behind it, and I love how capable they are for such an inexpensive timepiece. It’s just going to take a couple months to get here.

#1865 4 years ago

OK cool... Meranom and other legit sellers are good. But practically everything from India on eBay or from Ukraine (Etsy too, also FB ads) are unreliable frankenwatches. Beware!

Etsy does have some cool watch boxes though!

Help me out guys, first post here .
I have a 2004 Rolex Submariner oyster/ date / stainless. I need to get a new dial face , I called the local authorized dealer and the answer I got was ...
" we would send your watch to rolex for an estimate that would cost you $1500 for maintenance , then they could tell you how much the replacement dial face would cost, and would take more than 8 weeks .
WTF ? an estimate shouldn't cost me anything, besides it doesnt need to be serviced , it just needs a new dial. So it sounds like for a mere $2k or more I can get a new dial face !?!?, what a crock of shit.
What do i do , options??? I'm looking to sell it .
Thanks

Not a watch expert but companies like OMEGA and Rolex If the case needs to be opened they will only do so if a full service to all gaskets etc are done. To change the face this service would be needed and honestly advised. It Is a tough pill to swallow trust me had to do the same on a Speedy lens replacement.

Oh man, that is 30% of the cost of the watch .

Yeah that is expensive, I hope to never have to send my Sub in for a tune up as long as I have it. What is wrong that you need to replace the face?

#1876 3 years ago

$1500 sounds high for a basic service, but maybe that's what Rolex is getting these days. My uneducated guess is that the dial would be closer to $1000 for the part. I believe on some models the replacement dial will have some subtle designation that it is not original which generally has some impact on resale value.

#1877 3 years ago

I'm not sure what to do, I want to sell it and wanted to get a good price so I figured I would replace the dial and sell, maybe I should just sell as is .
About 3 years after I purchased it, a small amount of condensation formed on the inside . When it cleared out it left small water marks on the dial . As soon as I could I took it to the shop for service and they sent it in and did the whole gasket service thing but I declined replacing the dial at the time .
What happened was , after I changed the date I did not tighten it up completely and washed my hands or did some dishes .

Have you tried bringing it to (or contacting) an independent Rolex specialist? Depending on how bad it is they might be able to clean it up better than you think, perhaps without doing a complete movement service if it doesn't need one as you say.

#1880 3 years ago

How old is the sub? Does it have any yellow or cream color patina to the lume markers? From what I’ve seen on vintage stuff, it’s worth more as it ages and stays original.

For a replacement dial you might want to contact an independent watch maker to avoid the cost and wait time of a full service by Rolex service center. Besides, I think they’re backed up from being shut down due to covid as I’ve read many customers’ watches are stuck there

Good points guys ...
It is from 2004, and yes the lume need to be refreshed a bit dull.

Rebuilding a Bally Wizard! pinball machine with the Geckota G-01 v2 (Space Age) in gold & magenta waffle dial on Milanese gold mesh.

Tried a ton of straps with this one... brown ostrich, brown weave, black textured, gold beads of rice, leather NATO, argh! It’s fussy, but really nice on the mesh.
