I've been trying to find a Speedmaster 176.0014 (TV Dial) for years, I finally managed to get a somewhat beat up piece for a steal last week. It arrived a couple days ago and I'm very excited. I have a replacement case, pushers, crown, crystal, and movement holder coming. Once those arrive I'll be getting it serviced and the bracelet polished. It should look great once all done!

Good looking Omega, wasn't aware of that Speedmaster variation.

Do they make knock offs of Invictas?? Not trying to sound like a dick with that question honestly asking.

I’m not sure. Invictas are not that high-end of a watch to begin with. I live in Hong Kong and just across the border in Guangzhou China is ‘copy-watch’ heaven. I’ve never seen replica Invictas. Not to say that they’re not there though.

Hi all. I have some automatic watch winders for sale so that I can upgrade to a larger unit.

I have three Orbita single watch winders that are all rotorwind. They hold the watch vertically and the head turns till the watch oscillates back and forth to wind watch. They are he plug in version so you don't have to worry about batteries. I would take $100 shipped for each OBRO.

I also have a Monaco 2. This one is a larger winder with a wood and glass cabinet. It has a high gloss finish and is very nice looking. It has two winding heads that can be powered by the included plug. I would take $525 shipped for it OBRO.

I will post some pics and if you would like additional information please message me. The picture of the Monaco 2 is of the actual winder. The pics of the single winders (I have two rectangular and one round) are stock photos but I can send you actual photo and video of everything working as it should.

I am near Morristown NJ and a pick up meeting can be arranged and that will bring the cost down to 90 for the singles and 500 for the double.

Thanks, Ant

Hi. Uh... things happened and now I'm here.

The watch thing got me in December... bad. Like real bad. Came on like a tsunami. It always happens this way (pinball, headphones, audio, etc.), so I'm now in the "accumulation phase" for watches.

*sigh* I know how this goes. Nothing to do but ride it out.

Since mid-December, I've examined, cataloged, and sorted over 25,000 watch dials and viewed almost everything in the world which is in current production. As well as visited a dozen watch shops across Texas during my Christmas vacation.

1 (resized).JPG1 (resized).JPG

Since 2000, I've only had this watch, a Fossil Arkitekt FS-2919. Up to now it had been the first, and only, watch I'd ever bought. Got it from an airport kiosk for about $100 and thought, hmmmm, that looks nice.

2 (resized).JPG2 (resized).JPG

The integrated spherical strap was interesting and different. I didn't realize it was not possible to switch it out, but such possibilities hadn't even entered my mind yet. I just liked it and it got lots of compliments over the years. More than any other thing I wore, actually.

Last November, it stopped keeping time. I had the battery replaced, but it was still losing hours by the day. So I sent it to the Fossil factory shop for repairs. I noticed some options to have the "crystal" and other "things" changed.

"Cool. The glass thing is called the crystal. I can get a new one? Cool. No more looking at 19 years of scratches, so let's do that. Hmmm. What is a "movement"? Oh, the thing which moves the hands and date and stuff. I guess maybe I'll need one of those too."

The total bill was $65 including new crystal, movement, and shipping. While awaiting its return, the Googling began. This is when the Big Trouble started.

I began to watch YouTube videos about crystals and movements. Then stumbled across Just One More Watch, The Urban Gentry, Minitwatch, and Teddy Baldassarre. All of whom made this watch stuff quite entertaining. And THEN stumbled across the infamous Hodinkee article about the Seiko SNKL23 with its tuxedo stripes, applied indices, automatic movement, and a price of only $75. Sayyyyy, that DOES look pretty nice with a new strap on it. How cool... straps really can change the entire appearance. Wow... so many styles to pick from.

Subsequently, the comparison videos came... SNKL23 vs. SARB033. Then Tissot, Orient, should you really buy a Rolex, etc.

3 (resized).JPG3 (resized).JPG

I liked the blue dials I was seeing, so I bought a Seiko 5 SNKE51 and put it on a Fluco blue suede strap. Cool... this is easy! And wow is this comfortable! And how cool that it doesn't need a battery and the second hand sweeps so gracefully...

4 (resized).JPG4 (resized).JPG

Then came the Orient Bambino, gen 2, version 3 in anthracite grey. Originally got it in blue, but was too dark for my liking. And hey! Now I have a blue AND a grey dial! Those 21mm straps aren't easy to find, but eventually located a very nice Hadley-Roma genuine alligator strap to complement it. I must say, my first few outings were Instagram-worthy indeed:

instagram (resized).jpginstagram (resized).jpg

OK, this is just cool. Now let's get something with visible moving parts. How about another Orient? Already, I began to learn the value of Japanese movements and how Orient made them in-house (and what that meant).

5 (resized).JPG5 (resized).JPG

This time, an open heart sun moon w/roman numerals (still awaiting the strap). Now we got blue, grey, white... how about something different this time. Maybe green?

6 (resized).JPG6 (resized).JPG

Behold the Seiko SNKP23 Recraft in green, fitted with a Tech Swiss croc strap. Awesome. Feels like I'm on a vintage episode of Buck Rogers or something. Are we done yet?

7 (resized).JPG7 (resized).JPG

Nope. Let's go mainstream Swiss w/ETA movement this time. Tissot Visodate w/white dial fitted with HNS tropical NATO strap (yes, I copied Urban Gentry's recommendation since I liked it so much).

8 (resized).JPG8 (resized).JPG

Gosh, this is so fun! Are we done YET?

IMG_9199 (resized).JPGIMG_9199 (resized).JPG

Moonphase! Gotta have a moonphase! I did try on a Jaeger LeCoultre moonphase in rose gold at the store which I liked an awful lot, but at $18,000... er... ah... that's not where I need to start looking.

Enter Davosa. Yeah, it's quartz, but the lovely hands, raised indices, and overall simplicity will dress up nicely once the navy croc strap arrives. Also they gave me a great deal on a new one... just couldn't pass it up.

IMG_9193 (resized).JPGIMG_9193 (resized).JPG

Saw the Timex Marlin in an Urban Gentry video and couldn't get the image of it out of my mind. Well, I don't have a 34mm small dress watch yet and this would be a good opportunity to try a Colareb strap, so why not? Turns out it was a great decision. Already getting lots of compliments on this little guy and the strap (Colareb Matera) is the butteriest, smoothest, most luxurious thing which has ever touched my skin. Heavenly.

guanquin-15 (resized).jpgguanquin-15 (resized).jpg

I grew arm hair?!!? Nah... had to use a stock photo of the next buy: Guanqin GJ16034. Why this one? Well... I wanted to try ordering a cheapie straight from Alibaba. But this ain't no crappy $1 Daniel Wellington wannabe. It's got a genuine Japanese movement (either Seiko or Miyota), sunburst dial, nice hands, and a unique sculpted bezel I've not found anywhere else. Sort of a dressy/sporty hybrid... so why not?

Any other niches we need to cover?

zeppelin (resized).jpgzeppelin (resized).jpg

My first misfire: Zeppelin 7336-5 in rose gold with carmine red dial. Looks nice, doesn't it? Unfortunately, the internet can be deceiving. The lack of applied markers makes the dial look flat and uninteresting in person. The light falls dead on the dial with only the hands to reflect anything back. Until now, I never noticed how all of my other watches have raised indices and appliques. Sure do miss them when they're gone! Had to send this one back.

russia2 (resized).jpgrussia2 (resized).jpg

Vintage? Anyone say vintage? This Russian radiation/chemical military Pobeda watch has an unusual octagonal-ish case which I like. Hours on the inside, minutes on the outside, second hand spinning away the rads. Pretty cool. Wonder if I should check this with a geiger counter when it arrives... might be Chernobyl salvage. It did come from Ukraine after all.

russia8 (resized).jpgrussia8 (resized).jpg

Yanno, I like that case so much I might as well get one more. Russian Sturmanskie military watch. Love the arabic numerals on this one. If they have lume I'll squee... but not expecting it at this price.

IMG_9172 (resized).JPGIMG_9172 (resized).JPG

And finally, the limited edition Grand Seiko hi-beat SBGH267. Sure is pretty! OK, I kid... this has been sold out for a while. But I must say it is astonishing to behold and one on my grail list.

Overall, I have been most impressed with the value, style, and design of Japanese, German, and French-designed watches thus far. For some reason the Omegas, Rolexes, Pateks, AP's, Vacherons, etc... just aren't that interesting to me, though they are superb pieces of art and machinery. If I had that kind of cash to burn, JLC and A. Lange & Sohne are where I'd be looking. Or perhaps Louis Moinet, Bovet, Grieb & Benzinger, Jaquet Droz, Arnold & Son, ArtyA... geez I've seen some truly eye-poppingly astounding dials out there.

Of course, Jacob & Co.'s grand complications take the cake but, c'mon, nobody is going to wear a $1m lightbulb-sized wrist automation in public without a security detail!

Final irony: Got my Fossil back & turns out I had been wearing it wrong (too loose) for 19 years. Compared with the others, it now feels exorbitantly heavy and sweaty. Poor thing. Might have to sit at the back of the drawer for a while. Speaking of which... where will I put all of these dials?

box (resized).jpgbox (resized).jpg

Maybe this? But it only holds 16... LOL... and so it begins.

#1762 4 years ago

Yeah, that's already way too many... But if it makes you happy, why not? I feel lucky because aside from some unique modern Citizen watches, I ONLY like vintage automatics from the 70's. They are typically a lot cheaper than similar newer automatic watches with the same features.

Right now I have a daily worn Citizen BLS 8100 and a fairly rare 1975 Breitling Datora (Ref.2018) that I wear roughly once or twice a month [Pics in posts #1696 and #1715]. I may pick up another daily watch but haven't found the right one yet... It takes me literally 6 months of looking before I see something and instantly know "that's it". Condition is so important with vintage pieces.

Collecting watches can be a sickness, just like collecting pinball machines. At least they're smaller.

Here is my watch storage solution.

When my grandfather passed away in 1997, he left me his Heuer Autavia Chronograph from 1972. It’s a 73463 with a Stahl band.
I locked it away in the safe and had actually forgot about it until seeing this topic on Pinside!
Any of you watch guys know about it’s value? I would never sell it as it is an heirloom but I’d love to know what I should insure it for. The bezel has wear as my grandfather wore it everyday since he bought it new. The glass is nice but the band has light scratches throughout. Works amazingly!
Thanks and have a great day!
Eric

Nice. I would say for insurance/replacement value, $3K-$4K. You may find one cheaper but that's a very nice and very collectible watch. There's actually a very similar one on ebay right now that's $4400 but it's a slightly different model, and in better condition. You can find items cheaper if you are patient, similar to pinball. Remember with vintage jewelry and watches, condition is everything, just like pinball. Having the original receipt actually means quite a bit to collectors.

The linked ebay auctions are Cal 11/Cal 12 movements so might not be a good comparison. The Cal 12 was one of the first automatic chronographs and has a few unique features that make it more collectible. You can tell a cal 11/12 from the versions with more generic movements by the winding crown being opposite the chronograph pushers.

OP's watch likely has a handwind Venus 188 or the later Valjoux 7733. A very nice vintage chrono indeed!

True. I found a much closer match that actually has a sold price:

I believe for replacement value, you should be able to find a working watch like his model for 3-4K.

My newest vintage watch to add to my collection. It’s a 1947 Hamilton “Glenn” 747 17 Jewel movement with solid 14K gold case. Has original Hamilton embossed crown and those sword hands. An excellent example of this period watch in my opinion. It’s not as popular as they once were but I love them. Thanks for looking.

Started looking to replace my current timepiece, looked at dozens of similar analog & digital watches, ended right back up with another Timex.
Still might get a Tissot touch but the one I was looking at with the 5 - 55 on the bezel, did NOT seem to rotate. My current watch has no moving bezel and I miss that feature, found the current Expedition and for the price figured I'd give it a shot.
I don't dive, fly nor sail so a bezel with items specific for those would be lost on me. But a simple 'countdown' bezel is very handy.
Went with the Timex only as the Breitling Aerospace is still just little beyond my grasp.

Nice! If it's been sitting for a while have it serviced. They can also buff out the scratches on the band.

I love the old stuff as well. Most of my watches are 1960 and down. One of my favorite Hamilton's is the solid gold "Donald" from 1948.

I'm a big fan of vintage watches and I love seeing all of your photos. I have a handful of vintage watches with my favorite being my RCAF chrono and my Strela. They are probably the only material possessions that I love more than my Jackbot!

Side note: Let me know if anyone would like to trade a Speedmaster Professional for my Judge Dredd +/-.

Bought a NIB Hulk from Leonardo in Red Bank, NJ last year for my nephew for 13.5K as a graduation present.
I found that to be a silly Price since I’d paid less for my SS Daytona from the same dealer, but that what the kid wanted.

Are they really that much? I have one I purchased new a couple of years ago for 9050.00 but I see the price has been jumping. Very nice watch no matter what the price. I think my next purchase will be a deep sea.

That’s a good question. I probably got ripped off, but I was desperate to find a new one. If I recall correctly, they had a gently used one with box and papers for just over 10K.

60 and sunny in the dead of winter in Roanoke, so it’s gonna be blue tropical strap today before the Stupor Bowl.

GMT Batman on oyster bracelet out for Sunday.

A few years ago I could have gotten a brand new Submariner hulk for 8k at the same time I got this GMT BLNR, but passed because it was green and weird lol. Fast forward been trying to get one at MSRP for about a year now with no luck, so last week the search ended but cost me considerably more. The hulk I shared a few posts up is a new 2020 though and I’m glad to have one in my collection finally, so it’s all good

10k would be a steal in today’s market

...CCCP radioactive & chemical crew while rebuilding Jungle Queen today. Maybe I should have it tested with a Geiger counter?

Sadly, cool as it appears to be, I have learned this is a Frankenwatch. Basically all of these Russian-style watches you see on Etsy and eBay are remakes with new dials and hands. Neither original in design nor history.

Oh well. It'll make a fun gift for someone as a conversation starter. I don't collect novelties or homages.

Some of those old Pobedas have pretty nice movements.

See this this IS a thing! People get a Rolex for graduation. That happens. I tried convincing my parents this when I graduated high school (some many years back) but they laughed. They never did buy me a Rolex even after graduating college. Pfff

I recently finished an MBA and just bought my own damn Rolex. Used - but the exact model I wanted after high school.

With such lack luster games coming out recently, Pinball has me in a bit of a funk. I sold two pins recently, but nothing from my wish list is coming up locally or at sane prices. Hoping for a re-issue of JJPOTC at a CE level, but who knows if/when that might happen. Nothing on the horizon inspires me at the moment. I think I'm going to get more into watch collecting for the time being.

Is that a salmon dial Explorer? Nice.

My nephew had graduated med school. I’m not sure I would buy a Rolex for a high school graduation.

Same movement from the Explorer of this era (caliber 3000) but this is the Air King and slightly smaller at 34mm.

I never actually expected they'd buy it. I knew a kid that got one for HS and so that's what gave me the idea to ask (somewhat jokingly). I picked out the Air King because I had small wrists at the time. I still like the smaller case though. I have enough big watches that it makes this a little more special being small IMO.
