Rolex, one of the worst/over-rated watches for accurate time....

Maybe not the most accurate but look at how they have appreciated over the years,I have had one since I was 15 and paid 500.00 for it that SS Date Just now is 7000.00,I seem to be happy with just one Rolex unlike pinball and have been wearing a 1977 GMT with Pepsi bezel for a while and it keeps really good time and they are the easiest to sell with little to no loss if you need that last pin

The expensive watches are cool, and I can appreciate them, but to me they are like pinball machines.....

I can enjoy a $600 pinball machine as much as a $10,000 one, in the same way I can enjoy my $130 Citizen as much as a $10K omega or whatever.

It is really cool that you can afford these, and I certainly don't discount the collectabiity, but to me it just doesn't do it.

I like looking at them though! Interesting the collection connections we have

Rolex, is one of the most over-rated watches for accurate time....Very nice Omega Op.

Not true, actually....my Daytona chronometer is VERY accurate, the most accurate is my digital Casio G-shock Atomic daily wearer (ha). But as far as craftsmanship, name recognition, retained value, etc. Rolex takes a back seat to no other......is what it is......

And a nice Montechristo diamond cut, with Grand Marnier dipped on the end...sort of brings it all together......

Pretty dorky of me - but I miss the calculator watch I had when I was about 10. Kinda handy!

I built the "wrist calculator" by Sinclair in the mid '70's. No watch function, just a four function calculator that looked like a watch. Also had one of their "paperback book size" teevees with the direct view b&w CRT long before the Sony Watchman.

Yes, I was. Sold most off though. Had the Rolex for quite a while. I had a $3k custom band made for it. (as I did for most of my watches) Most were 18k. I still have my solid gold Movado with custom 18k and diamond bracelet. I'll snap a pic tonight for you "watch guys"

My Brother in law head of R&D for Timex so I am a Timex guy.

#61 10 years ago

The watch on the right was a Limited Edition Pinnochio. Every hour his nose grew until 12 and then it would snap back! Fun stuff! I used to love the "digital" watches. You push the button and the time lights up in red! I had a custom gold body made for one and sold it about 10 years ago for a pretty dollar.

My "TIG" (fake TAG) bought for $35.00 from a street "salesman" in San Francisco. His starting price was $400.00 and my first COuNter offer was $20.00

I also had the first Swatch Automatic. It was a great watch. I can't find a pic of my actual one, but this is it. I mostly collected automatic or wind watches as I hate batteries.

My friend has a collection of the repro watches. They are not like the cheap old ones. Now they make them with sweeping second hand and the correct weight. An excellent quality Rolex knock off can cost $150!

#67 10 years ago

my ex bought a breitling as a wedding gift. I was fishing in the gulf about 5 years ago when a pin in the band broke right as I was casting... oops? the good news is I had a jewelry policy that I didn't even know I had. the better news is insurance paid off more than I was expecting. the best news is I received a lot more than I would have had I pawned it.

#68 10 years ago

My buddy traded his very good condition Breitling Superocean Steelfish for money to fix his car. $800. Lol.

These are very nice. Can you snap a close up of the watch which is second from the left? I love that mesh bracelet. Is that an 18K deployant buckle?

I have a friend that works in NY at breitling and gets some great deals on watches. She says that a lot of her clients spend sometimes up to $40K-$60K on watches from her store. The last watch she bought she paid $2k for it and said it's worth around $20K. I am still waiting on that deal from her that she said she was going to hook me up with..

Lemme ask what is probably a dumb question but I will expose myself anyways .. how do you discern a real watch from a replica* Is there a website that shows the difference? Do you only buy direct from Rolex or Omega, etc stores?

* wanted to say "refake" here but was advised I'd owe Tiki royalties

The most basic is that most fakes have quartz movements and have a "sweep" seconds hand. While genuine mechanical watches generally have a ticking seconds hand. You can spot prolly 75% of fake Rolexes by the seconds hand.

Here's a site with a pretty good rundown. http://www.bobswatches.com/rolex-blog/rolex-info/the-top-ten-ways-to-spot-a-fake-rolex.html

Once you have a real one, you can spot most fakes from, literally, 5 feet away.

A great site!!! Have to very careful, however, as the fakes have gotten very good in some areas. Best advise...handle, wear, fully examine real versions ( weight, detail in appearance, movement, etc.) helps to spot a fake...the ONLY way to know 100% is to know who you're buying from!!! absolutely no eBay! regardless what they say.

Depends on the watch but there are MANY ways to tell the real ones from the fake. Although the fakes are getting better (some of them).

In regards to my Speedmaster Professional its really pretty easy to spot 99% of the fakes.

1. In the fakes the little sub-dials are spaced way too far apart (because of the fake Chinese movements that are used most of the time). Also the spacing of the numbers on the outer "Tachymetre" ring are usually incorrect as well.

2. The fakes are normally a lot lighter due to the cheap bracelets used.

3. The fine details (The logo, they type face, the markers) are often way off on the fakes.

Replica watches are highly frowned upon.

I can remember when a $100 watch was expensive to me; and I would buy a $100 watch.....not a fake Rolex. (In fact I still don't own a Rolex).

#90 10 years ago

Most people would never be able to tell a fake from a real watch, but a watch enthusiast can spot a fake almost immediately.

The interesting thing I find is that there are two groups of people we are talking about here: the average Joe who couldn't give a crap if you are wearing a $5 digital watch or a $500,000 Patek (90% of people), and wouldn't even notice you had something on your wrist at all. Then you have the watch enthusiasts who do look at people's watches and sometimes even compliment you on what you're wearing.

Now, observing the fact that the people that would compliment you on your watch or notice that it even exists is going to be someone who knows what they are looking at, wearing a fake means that for anyone who looks at it even once already knows it's a fake and will pass judgement appropriately.

It's why I've never really understood why someone would wear a fake. The people you are trying to impress are the ones that know it's not real and will think less of you as a result, meaning you were worse off than just wearing nothing at all!

…, meaning you were worse off than just wearing nothing at all!

that's why i opt in with going through the day just wearing nothing at all
it's a little odd at work at the beginning…

#92 10 years ago

I have a Tissot Touch, I bought it because I liked the look of it, and the features it has. I wear it all the time, in 5 years only 4 people have commented on it. Many people want the BLING. They don't care if they buy a fake. I still wear a watch, as my phone spends 97% of its time in my pocket, not attached to one of my hands.

Quoted from Mar:

Not totally true anymore. SOME of the expensive copies are excellent. (sweeping second hand, correct weight, excellent stencil, etc) I had a Rolex that I would use when I went to New Orleans or someplace where I might lose it.
I was in a bar in LA and started talking about watches with a friend. Another guy looked at my watch and offered me more than I paid for it. Guess what?...it's gone!

Here is my solid gold Movado with custom band.

Ok, so this pic will probably make people cringe, but this is my daily watch. It is also the most expensive I have ever bought (and it's not expensive really).

I am very hard on watches, so for me, it makes no sense to buy an expensive one.

Before buying glorified consumables & their marketed fiction of ideology please read the book "Affluenza" & the blogs of Raptitude & Mr Money Mustache.

Buy investments that contribute to your freedom not flash & bling for you life avatar that only become a shackle

Unless it's pinball, rum, strippers, cigars & bacon...

Well I certainly don't suffer from "Affluenza". I drive a 7 year old Dodge and have no plans to upgrade anytime soon.

I appreciate watches in a very similar way that I appreciate pinball machines. It's their mechanical nature (yes I mostly own mechanical watches....I only have one quartz watch and only because that one has an alarm on it). I'm fascinated by their complex mechanical nature. That something with hundreds of moving parts and no power source (other than a spring) can keep relatively accurate time is very cool to me.

Same way I appreciate the complex mechanical nature of pinball machines.....although granted I prefer the more modern SS machines over the the EM's generally speaking. I still appreciate the complexity of the EM's.

I found a company online that does affordable custom watches. On a whim I custom'd up this one.

Probably a little inside for most. This is one of the eponymous symbols from the 1960s British Spy series called 'The Prisoner'.
