Both my Williams 7 and 11 series use 22 and 18 awg along with the Molex KK396 (0.156") or Molex 0.093" pin and socket connectors, I'd say it is safe to assume even their System 9's used the same.

My vote is for it would be fine since 16awg is a bigger size than the 18 or 22awg.
I added more led's to my Black Knight's GI circuit, worked out fine. I went a little more OCD and bought the same color and gauge.
