Gotta believe next year is going to be EPIC, especially with all the games coming out and DR entering the fray.

One thing I would recommend for ALL of the manufacturing participants is take advantage of Pinside and actually come on here and explain your position, views and rationale on games. Yeah i know that's not happening.

To say its a "cancer" or "sewer" is WAY overly generalizing the situation, highly offensive and totally untrue. As a buyer of all these games i don't get it.

It's my opinion that despite all the criticism, praise, hate, love etc...you manufacturers, artists, designers, etc. better appreciate the fact that people are talking about your games, good or bad, love or hate.

It's when people STOP complaining or commenting is when you better start F ing worrying. That's means nobody gives a shit about what you are making.

People are just having a conversation. I love the Red Sox, I hate the Yankees...blah, blah blah Embrace it people!

2019 trend.....you have to differentiate your LE models from "premiums" and "pros" in additional minor ways.

For example, the autographed card and "episodes" on BM66 is really cool and provides some differentiation.

    Do more of it!

Franchi, we love pinball and we love to talk shit about it, praise it, and we love to buy these games. What don't you get about that?

I just bought a Beatles despite the shitty art package! Just kidding, i love it. Along with BM66 btw

Good lord dude, who gives a F who likes it or doesn't? I'm pretty sure you, Donny and Yeti get blown regularly on here. The art is phenomenal. Take your panties off and grow a pair.

    WTF

    Quoted from DBLM:

I hear what you are saying Iceman but just look at the interaction with Zombie Yeti in the Primus thread and you will see why a lot of creators do not come on here. Outside of Spooky who a variety of Pinsiders have adopted as their cause celebre, people crap on Stern, American Pinball, Multimorphic, etc all the time. People crapped on Auric for his work on Alien, they crap on people making mods, stadium lighting, everything. I get that we are all passionate about a niche hobby but I think a variety of folks have the attitude that they are owed something or are entitled to something.
Reading the Beatles thread has been hilarious. People were so disappointed in it being a retheme and that it did not live up to the stature of the Beatles. It was like Stern went and took a dump on these folks dead grandma. It is what it is. Buy, don’t buy. That is up to the individual. But people take this way to personally. I am excited about a Jaws pin but if it does not interest me when it comes out, no big deal. Not long to lose sleep over it.

This is my whole point though.

I'm thinking Spooky embraces it because they have to and maybe want to because they care about sales and don't take people for granted?

Most people here are passionate about pinball and support ALL of the manufacturers, designers, artists, modders, etc.....

Some people may get their panties in a wad but all the masses are really doing is crying out for a little LOVE!

I'll say it again and they better digest this, "when Pinside ceases to exist and others stop talking about pinball, good or bad, that's when you better start F ing worrying".....

    think about that Taco Bell

    Quoted from DBLM:

Not disagreeing with you at all. I do think that some of the more zealous hyper posters and personalities though take things too far though sometimes and drive people away. As an outsider looking in, I think that these folks feel entitled to things, which makes me shake my head. There are a few that I have seen that are like this in pretty much all threads, but then you have others that jus pop up in certain threads.
Whether the manufactures are posting or not, it is obvious that they pay attention. I would assume in some cases that companies want to control their own marketing and messaging, so that is why you are seeing things like the Stern of the Union communications. It makes sense, although I am sure that I will rankle some.

No doubt. Of course they pay attention while they say they don't.

The whole "taking things too far" is the world we live in today and its pathetic honestly.

And there are a few whacko nut jobs everywhere in all walks of life. Have we not seen it?

I'd say come in here and make your case instead of calling people a "cancer" and "stupid".

Either way it doesn't matter, people are going to discuss what they like, good or bad, love or hate and I don't see what's wrong with that as long as WE are talking about it.

    Quoted from DBLM:

As for trends, I think we will see the following:
Most themes will be based on properties that are 30-50 years old to target the pinball market with disposable income (not a knock, just a matching of things that remind people of their childhood through early adulthood). This 41 year old is begging for Jaws!
Further market segmentation (standard editions and higher cost vanity pins). I think you are finally going to see people test the waters on higher cost limited runs to cater to the higher end market.
Higher focus on sound and light shows. The past few years, companies focused on artwork. I think sound and lights will be next because those can be addresses relatively inexpensively but brings more value and profits.
A move away from some of the more complex “math chess” rule sets to something a littl more approachable.
Stern using another legacy design as a basis for a new game or re-release.
Deep Root represents a wild card. I think with just the sheer amount of talent that they have that the odds of something interesting coming out of them is high. Interesting good or interesting meh remains to be seen.

Agreed on the higher cost TRUE LE's. They are coming and will be gobbled up IF there is some differentiation.

Yes on the "chess pins" but deep fun like Lyman delivers is big in a HUO environment.

Deeproot hired Jpop, as bad as it seems, because they saw people like myself and other buy into rarity, perceived innovation and sexy themes.

How much did he pay for Magic Girl, Retro Zombies and Alice in Wonderland? Nada.....

Yet, DR might sell a shit ton of those games despite Jpop if the price is right.

I'd also say take a cue from Heighway pinball and Alien, that game is AWESOME all the way around.

The fact that David Thiel is working for DR is a HUGE plus.

Why do you think these manufacturers take jabs at each other all the time? Just listen to Franchi and Kaminkow selling simplicity over complexity when it suits them. It's hilarious.

    Quoted from Aurich:

If your attitude is "look at these entitled jerks who expect quality and thoughtfulness when they spend nine thousand dollars on a game" then maybe the problem isn't Pinside, it's you.

And of course, I'll take a game that plays like Ac/dc with Ritchie/Lyman over artwork all day. Yet, I want the artwork too because we are paying big bucks for it now.!

GOT is arguably the ugliest pin ever, TWD ain't no beauty either and Ac/dc is a pig artwork wise.

And btw, you guys did a phenomenal job on Alien given the circumstances. Truly amazing.

We are paying Franchi, Donny and Yeti to deliver great art. Yes i mean "Pinside" and others worldwide.

    Quit crying.

    #18 5 years ago

I agree with all but this.

Yes its expensive as shit to build pins today and 2019, we understand that.

Higher prices will be tough to deliver i think regardless of whatever "formula" they are using. They better figure out how to curb that trend AND still provide great pinball at a profit.

If it can't be done then new pinball dies.

    Quoted from o-din:

2019 will be the last year of licensed themes from 40- 50 years ago, as that fad is nearing the end of it's lifespan.
Come 2020, pinball takes a big leap forward and most themes are from the '90s.

I agree old fart. After the Munsters and Beverly Hillbilly pins we will move into things like Seinfeld and Big Bang Theory!

    Quoted from Pinphila:

American Pinball does a great job of interacting on here. The thread is pretty positive too. Its a good example of how manufacturers can deal with pinside. There is constructive criticism and some immature petulant behavior but they stay above it. It would be nice to see DR and JJP do the same. (not like Homepin)

Instead of whining about whatever on some podcast, which for the most part only Pinside listens to, make your points here as well.

Yeah i know its hard, so is making pinball.

Pinside or no Pinside there is gonna be criticism. Pinball isn't an everybody gets a trophy business.

    2019

Pinball machines cost more than the Smart Cars that Odiner and the Cali's love!

    Quoted from LTG:

    Interesting thread.
Got me to thinking with games we know are coming. Rumors of games that are coming.
I wonder what tech support will be like in 2019 ?
    Keep the trends coming, please.
    LTG : )

I thinking we need to clone more Lloyd's in 2019!

    Quoted from Sinestro:

    2019 - JJP announces a new title.
2020 - Said JJP title is released.

I'm going out on a limb here but i believe 2019 is the year JJP will announce a pin AND ship it in the same year!

    #41 5 years ago
    Quoted from Sinestro:

If they reskin WOZ to Willy Wonka, then yes.
    A new game? No way.

    Lol...

I'm hopeful this time. Why? Not sure but practice makes perfect and I can't imagine they will show another game again without being ready to ship it shortly thereafter, 3 months max.

    #44 5 years ago
    Quoted from benheck:

2019 will be the "Year of the Original Theme".
Steve Ritchie, Scott's next game, stuff from Deeproot.
Question is will people buy them?

Interesting. Looks like High Roller Casino and Sharkey's Shootout back in 2000 and 2001 were the last Stern "original themes". And not sure how creative those games were.

If its a cool layout like WH20 I could be enticed for sure.

    What about MG and/or Raza?

    #57 5 years ago
    Quoted from Metaluna5:

If I like wearing panties, that's MY business!

You and me both, Lacey style. Wife loves it!

    #71 5 years ago

In 2019 Kman will take a math class and figure out what COGS versus "wholesale/net margins" on a pin means. Yes, "fixed overhead" is a real thing that gets applied to every single pin!!! Stick to marketing and what you know.

That's questionable too, "pinside has zero impact on who buys what pins but i do with my podcast"! Seriously, are you really in marketing, see below?

And Brenda will make him see a doctor to cure his overwhelming narcissism. Not....Love you man

Hey Brenda, its still not too late!

    #74 5 years ago
    Quoted from NeilMcRae:

Spooky will do what spooky always do, make greatness.

American Pinball look like they have a huge hit with Ocktoberfest its a super fun game.

Totally agree with both of these statements!

I will be getting an Oktoberfest pin in 2019. And hopefully Acnc arrives by January

    #76 5 years ago
    Quoted from NeilMcRae:

Here in the UK its already happening - several really nice examples of big BW games (Totan, CV MM AFM MB TZ) have sold for well below what you might expect.

In with the new and out with the old as they say.
