20171103_121353_resized (resized).jpg20171103_121353_resized (resized).jpgWhile I am not a fan of many pin mods, I always wanted to upgrade the inadequate speakers in my Big Hurt machine. In my research, I found that Pinball Pro does not sell a kit for these machines so I thought I would share the speaker mods I made in order to make a Pinball Pro kit to work on a system3 machine. I purchased 2 SP-48 speakers from Pinball Pro, for $75 shipped from Greg at Pinball Pro, a great guy to deal with. He warned me that these speakers would not fit, but I was sure that I could make them work. The speakers fit without modification in the left side. However, the right side required me to bore a 3-1/2" hole in the display panel to accommodate the larger speaker. Once I enlarged the speaker hole, I drilled and counter-sunk (4) 6/32” t-nuts to match the factory appearance of the left speaker. After a test fit, I painted the display panel black to again match the factory appearance of the left side. I then re-attached the speaker grill with a staple gun. I also opted change the wire gauge of the factory wire to a lower gauge to ensure optimum performance. Greg at Pinball Pro included some heavier gauge wire with the speaker purchase, which is used in many of the kits available for other pinball machines. I then used a mini-fit pin removal tool to remove the factory wire and crimped new female ends onto the new speaker wire which would plug into the factory connector. The Pinball Pro speakers are rated for 8 ohms while the factory speakers are rated at 4 ohms, but this was not a problem. The Pinball Pro speakers are not as sensitive as the factory 4 ohm speakers which required me to turn up the volume control slightly to achieve the same volume level that I am accustomed to. The speakers sound great with much improved audio presents and dynamics across the frequency range. These speakers also emit less distortion when turned up and much of the usual “HMMM” background noise is now gone. Overall the speaker required about an hour to install and I would definitely do it again.
