Finally had a little dad time today. Got the head done on my Centaur, so easy with Jeff's stencils. Also tried Molotow spray paint instead of the HVLP gun...not bad at all.

It would be cool if you could do the Bally Midway generic side art. There's a lot of different applications for that with 9 different games using that side art.

These are pics of my neighbors PinBot. He did mine as well but without the custom paint job. He used Pimp stencils on his and an old set from another guy on mine and he won't use non-pimp stencils again.PART_1470766473580_IMG_1291 (resized).jpgPART_1470766473580_IMG_1291 (resized).jpgPART_1470766473538_IMG_9394 (resized).jpgPART_1470766473538_IMG_9394 (resized).jpg

Very cool paint job.

I will only us Pimp stencils from now on. Registration is spot on, shapes are perfect, material is pliable and sticks as it should. The photos above are of my Pin•Bot.

Amazing quality, I just ordered stencils for Buckaroo and Gottlieb's "Pin Up what recommendations do you have for splatter effect like you did on your Target Alpha?

Special tip on the end of my airbrush which collects paint, then spits it out a small hole rather than a fine mist

Wow, The F2000 cabinet looks AWESOME! I love seeing my stencils in PAINT rather than digital art on my screen!

I bought the Strikes and Spares set. They look great. I have them unrolled (per the instructions) and plan to do them later this year.

The youtube.com video really helps me understand the process.

So when painting the stencil area, do folks usually lay the cabinet on its side and paint one side at a time, or do they apply the stencils for the whole cabinet, sit it upright (like as it would be in its legs), and spray all sides at once?

#35 7 years ago

Can't wait for GTB to be available. Needing Atlantis, Strange World and Jacks Open.

#36 7 years ago

When ordering the medusa stencil kit you are given this choice: PLEASE SELECT HEAD DEPTH: HINGED / NON-HINGED. You may be looking for future trouble as bally made heads with hinges in both depths.

I install the 3 stencils to the cab one at a time. Doing like I show in the video allow GRAVITY to be your BEST FRIEND. Once both sides and front are applied, I spray the entire cabinet at once with first color sitting on a dolly, just without legs. repeat for 2nd stencils

I just finished Eight Ball Deluxe and was AMAZED at how well it turned out! I can't say enough about the product! Some suggestions for anyone using the stencils...

1. Obviously, preparation is 95% of the job. Especially with high gloss enamel paints, any imperfection will show through. Take your time! I started with 80 then 120 then 220 grit and patched imperfections along the way. I also used a lot of tack clothes to get any dust & debris off the surface right before I painted.

2. The registrations marks align the 2nd stencil over the 1st. Once you have the first stencil in place, mask the registration mark, especially if you're painting a dark color. On EBD, I masked the marks and after spaying gloss black on the head, it made it much easier to align the X's to the 2nd stencil.

3. I painted all three sides of the cabinet at once with the cabinet sitting on saw horses. So assuming that you kept the cabinet and head piece in its natural orientation, once you finishing painting and are ready to pull the stencil, start from the bottom up. My first attempt was from the top and some of the removed stencil touched the fresh paint below. Not a huge issue, but it required a small artist paintbrush to touch-up. Working from the bottom up, using an Exacto knife made it easier to lift the stencil and cut away the excess as I went.

4. I used a cheap Harbor Freight HVLP sprayer hooked to my pancake air compressor and latex enamel paints from Lowes and had excellent results. The compressor could barley keep up, but you won't be throwing that much paint that it will really matter. I was really nervous about the cabinet as I had to spray a pale yellow over black which took several coats in a short amount of time (instructions say no more than 5-10 minutes of painting before you lift the stencil). I practiced a LOT on a scrap of plywood (coated with the same black paint as a base) to ensure that the paint was flowing at a consistent rate so that I could get the yellow down without runs.

5. I had a pile of latex exam gloves that I constantly changed. You'll be removing the stencils while the paint is still wet and the gloves kept my hands clean during that process.

In the images below, I had everything sanded down to bare wood before priming and painting.
