Just started watching the auction. Prices seem high to me, but I haven't purchased working machines in a while...

    Lot #2 Superman wide-body sold for $3700.
Lot #3 Sky Rocket EM sold for $2600
Lot #4 Nitro Gound Shaker sold for $2300

    #2 43 days ago

That's bonkers. I guess there will be few bargains at that shindig.

    Insane.

Don’t forget to add about 20-25 percent in taxes and fees. Plus shipping costs, which will likely be astronomical for people who use the auction’s suggested shipper instead of Navl. I won Dio’s couch at auction and they tried to charge me $1400 to have it shipped from LA.

Prices will be absolutely stupid for this action. Like most of you 10 people I know who don’t know anything at all about pinball except that I’m into it texted me about this auction. Another 5 texted my girlfriend about it.

They’ve done a killer job promoting this thing so it won’t just be pinball people bidding on games.

I refuse to believe these are real prices. There is no way someone is really buying a Big House for $5300, not to mention the fees and taxes on top of that.

Gotta be a money laundering scheme or something.

    #8 43 days ago

Keep posting prices please. It’s fun to see

So far Rocky selling for 10,000 is the big surprise. (The hammer price is the sale price, right?)

Someone in the other thread called it a "white cabinet Rocky". Does that just mean the cabinet isn't the original cabinet, or has been painted over?

Does anyone know if there's anything special about this particular Rocky?

Edit: I checked it out and there's not, they would have mentioned it in the description.

    #19 43 days ago
    Quoted from mark532011:

Bronco - Pinball Machine Gottlieb EM $4,200

WTF??? Seriously?? I refuse to believe this one. My co-worker's father passed away and gave me Bronco for free. This price is more than 3x regular price.

Wow.... I really wanted to bid on Abra Ca Dabra... but if these prices continue... I'm NOT Biding on ANY.

This auction has received national media coverage ex: The Today Show, maybe these are truly uninformed buyers? Great notoriety for the hobby however.

    #21 43 days ago

yeah some of these are just ridiculous, I havent seen any actual deals mostly just insane prices

    #22 43 days ago

Only game that seemed "low" to me was that spirit for 6300. Usually those go for more even when not at a big auction

    No.

Add 18% Buyers Premium on top of hammer price, plus 7.75% CA Sales Tax.

The Rocky cost the buyer $12,700 bucks.

Double of what it sits for right now on ebay, As with most of those prices.

These prices are all on the high end. I bet it's a combination of:

    (1) People have pinball money to burn but few NIB in 2021 means extra funds to use up.
    (2) From a museum, bidders are expecting top quality per machine.
    (3) The publicity for this auction was off the charts. Everyone is watching this thing, and it only takes two people to want the same pin to make prices go up.

Anyone else feel like this auction is the beginning of the end? I can’t help but think that there is going to be some unintended consequences from all of this. These are my morning toilet thoughts.

    The end of what?

    #36 42 days ago
    Quoted from Methos:

    The end of what?

The demand and pinball craze? Not for people around here necessarily, but for the general public.

Right now it’s cool to have a pinball machine in your house. I haven’t been around the hobby long enough but I get the impression that 20 years ago that might not have been the case.

Even my wife had heard about it over here .
So sad , it was on my bucket list to get to 1 day

    #39 42 days ago

I recently helped some friends auction off their metal fab business. Afterwards, there were lots of mysteries. People who bid on scrap steel sheets and paid MORE for them than new prices. People who bid, and paid, thousands of dollars for machines they NEVER picked up. Then, some machines worth $50K easily were rushed through the auction (the auctioneer didn't do the old going-going-gone and hammered almost right away) and sold for $4,000.

The fact that these machines were at a 'museum' adds panache for a lot of people. For the rest of their lives, they'll be able to confide, "It came out of a museum...."

    #40 42 days ago

Maybe celebrities and people with obscene amounts of money wanted in on the fun. Why is it hard to believe that people other than broke Pinsiders who nickel and dime every for sale ad are buying these games? There are probably also a few fluff bids going on, but that's been going on since the SuperAuctions from days of yore.

I think many pinsiders are far from broke. I think it’s hard for some of us with knowledge of historical price values and gameplay value to see some of these titles going for so much. It’s probably a multitude of variables at play.

    A fool and their money.....

    #43 42 days ago

Saw some of the selling prices in above posts....

I think I am going to hire the auction company to sell my collection. Lmk if anyone interested. I am kidding but only half way.

    #44 42 days ago

For the wealthy it's a convenient one stop shop to fill a home arcade.

"The boss gave me $200k to buy them 50 games"

They don't care if they're good deals or not. It doesn't matter.

The goal is to fill their arcades not find bargains.

    #45 42 days ago

My question is, who gets the money from this? I thought the majority of the machines were donated\purchased with donated money. Unless I missed something somewhere.

    #46 42 days ago

You missed something. All these games are/were owned by John Weeks.

    #47 42 days ago

hammer prices add up to over $420K so far, only about 10% of the way through the auction, about $3200 average. I feel like it's gotta cool off a little for the next segments, and definitely next weekend.

With the New York Times specifically mentioning that POTC could go for $35K I bet that will get close (and if there's a Stern POTC there I bet it gets wrapped up in the same hype). For some reason different media outlets reported the whole collection was $8MM for 1300 games, $6100 average, NYT reported $7MM for 1700 games, $4100 average (there are only 1386 lots in the catalog).

I doubt it, it may get worse... the guy who bid 9900 on Rocky and lost to the guy who bid 10k is gonna realize he better step up his game if he wants to win something..
When Baywatch (or whatever the next pin he is interested in is) comes up for sale, well goddamnit nobodys gonna beat him this time...
