    Years ago, the small local library in my hometown was a social center, thanks to the librarian who ran it at the time. She had all sorts of activities and classes going throughout the year, and encouraged people to host activities of their own, including sharing their hobbies. It helped get people in the door.

    Showcasing interesting things beyond books and media helps breathe some life into libraries, and introduces patrons to things they wouldn't normally encounter.
