Quoted from Colsond3:

Not sure if this was thrown out there before...end of Goodfellas when Deniro is going to have Karen whacked (Liotta's wife), but she senses it and gets the hell outta dodge. Nitro Ground Shaker and...can't remember the other and the name is sprayed over. And is that a NIB in the crate? LOL

Pretty sure that one in the first pic is a Gottleib Astro.

In Scott Pilgrim vs the World, there's 4 pins in the background of the arcade. THREE of them are World Poker Tour, and I think the 4th is Austin Powers, but can't be sure (it's blurry). Sounds like the vendor supplying the pins for the scene had a lot of WPT on hand.

SNL had a Williams Olympic Hockey in one skit the last week of Jan.

Pics of the Scott Pilgrim I was talking about:

3 WPT Machines and another that I couldn't make out but may be Austin Powers

Caught this on The Golden Girls this morning. Can’t make out the game though.

That's a Delta Queen pin.

His Dark Materials has a made-up pinball machine that looks like a cross between a bingo and an old woodrail called PinballTrollMan. It's a weird detail for a northern outpost saloon in a fantasy show. I was surprised to see it.

Silicon Valley Season 6 Episode 5 also had what looked like a reworked Gottlieb in the background. EDIT: Freeze-framing to take this picture, it's definitely a SHAQ ATTACK. Sorry it's a little blurry, but it was never in focus since it's in the background.

In Netflix Tiger King episode 2 there's a partial shot of a Stern Metallica in the office of the drug dealer guy, Mario.

Quoted from dirkdiggler:

Police Academy has been mentioned before but no one has named all three games. Always funny watching a pin going down the street[quoted image][quoted image]

The bowling one is Williams Triple Strike.

I think Key Posts are the best way to at least break out a listing of the titles covered. I started indexing them just now and will work back through the whole thread this week so we end up with a listing of every movie/tv show in the thread in one easy place.

Next step would be having the OP take that kep post index, sort it by alpha, and post the updated list to the OP on a regular basis so there's an alphabetical list.

EDIT:Here's the alpha-sorted list with everything in as of 4/21 with most duplicates removed. The only duplicates that remain are episodes of shows like Tanked and American Pickers, and The Liquidator where I don't have season and episode numbers so I can't tell if it's a duplicate. If anyone knows what the correct season/episode numbers are for those shows in the index, let me know and I'll update it. When I have them all for a particular show, I can remove duplicates for that show, if any.

Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:

This sounds like a royal pain to me. Not sure if OP (or anyone) would want to keep up with it. Just not a simple way to track such a thing in the forums as far as I can tell. I just request that people keyword search for the show/movie to see if anyone else has already posted before they do.

It's really not that bad once the initial ones are keyposted. Probably 5 minutes once a week, or a minute or two each time a new one shows up. I have no problem doing it. I do it for the HEP thread and that's worked out well.

#1922 4 years ago
Quoted from Jackontherocks:

Appreciated any help and thanks for above, I am not the computer tech wiz so anyone please feel free to organize etc

I have a script set up that can take the index, break out the titles and sort it in two steps, so pretty easy to maintain once I get all the posts keyposted.

Also, in general (some exceptions) if someone doesn't post a picture of the incident, I don't keypost it. There are only a few like that, but text only isn't super great for a thread like this.

#1927 4 years ago
Quoted from BMHouze:

Elektra the pool hall scene.
Alien Poker
Striker Extreme

FYI, if there's no picture, these won't be included in the index.

#1929 4 years ago
Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:

BTW, I am impressed. Your Index idea is great.

Yeah, me and my big mouth.

That said, I already have about 25% done.

#1932 4 years ago
Quoted from sohchx:

Add X-Files S01 Episode 7, and there is a Spy Hunter Pin in almost every episode of Game Shakers on Nickelodeon

Without a picture, I'm not adding posts to the index in the interests of keeping the list clean. Just with the ones with pictures, we're likely going to have around 400 references. I have no way (I'm going to take MORE time to do) of independently verifying there's a pin actually in ones that have no picture, and part of the fun of this thread (as I see it) is people identifing which pin is in the picture and what scene it's in. So please post a pic with your sighting. For TV if people can post the episode name or season/episode numbers it would be helpful.

It's not that hard to take a picture if you're streaming Hulu/Netflix/youtube/CBS/HBO, etc. On a PC, make it full screen then hit Alt+Prt Sc (Printscreen) to capture the selected window. Load up paint or photoshop or any graphics program and hit CTRL-V to paste it in there and then save as a jpg to your local machine. Then you can upload the jpg.

#1937 4 years ago
Quoted from sohchx:

My mistake, I meant to say Ghost in the machine Season 1 EP 7[quoted image]

Someone else already had posted that pic, but they put it in with an additional pic from S01 E08 (Black Knight). So I tagged theirs as E08 and yours as E07 even though they had both.

(Not for you, a general request)

From here on out, it would be great to limit each post to 1 movie/tv episode/music video, etc. Multiple shows in one post aren't index-friendly. Multiple PICTURES from the same episode, movie, etc are great, though.

#1950 4 years ago
Quoted from ImNotNorm:

Watching Grown Ups and saw some pins. Did a thread search to see if it's been mentioned, and it had. But no pics....so here you go.
[quoted image][quoted image]

Topic Index lists it and has a link with a pic:

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/pinball-in-movies-or-tv-shows-name-a-game-you-have-seen-in-the-background/page/23#post-4504467

#1952 4 years ago
Quoted from ImNotNorm:

I searched for the name of the movie . Not 'grow ups'

That's why using the thread topic index at the top of each page is the most reliable way to find what's in the thread. Grown Ups is in the topic index, correctly spelled. In a few more days it will have everything in it and be more accurate than searches, as you have experienced.

#1958 4 years ago
Quoted from SkyKing2301:

Let's give our gracious index-builder a chance to get caught up, shall we? He's working his way back from current to previous ... (which unfortunately credits re-posters who didn't bother searching first, if anyone cares about fake internet bragging rights)
X-Files S1 E7 was first identified wayyyy back in Post 340:
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/pinball-in-movies-or-tv-shows-name-a-game-you-have-seen-in-the-background/page/7#post-2687726

That will be fixed when everything's in and the duplicates are removed.

#1979 4 years ago
Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:

BTW, this brings up the question that if a video is posted instead of a photo (as was the case here), does that count? I vote is that it should, and the OP should index the post.

There are a bunch of procedural questions that will have to be addressed moving forward so it's consistent. In general, I have been valuing screenshots over video, because screenshots are stored locally on pinside, and video is external on youtube. If you go back through the thread, there are quite a few videos that no longer work at all - the youtube video is deleted or blocked, whereas ALL the screenshots are here and still work.

So, based on what I've seen working through this thread, video is nice but unreliable long-term (until/unless pinside starts allowing uploaded video, which I don't think is happening), so I say screenshots are king for pinside posterity.

BTW, If we have a post with an image but we don't see it in the index, should we alert you or are you still working on it?

I'm almost 80% done. I'll clean up any issues once I have everything in and can see all the duplicates, etc. The current sorted list is on page 39 of this thread. There are a lot of duplicates.

Yes, I was quoting someone else who saw if first but didn't post a pic.

Yeah, I missed the name of the show because you just called back to the quoted text instead of putting the show name above the picture. It's easy to do when you're blasting through the thread to get almost 2000 posts indexed.

Just added it.

That's how I missed the Forged in Fire video. Not in the key post and not word searchable. I don't know how you're going through this entire thread to make these key post's, but it's appreciated. That's a lot of work.
Back on topic....here's an old CTV News clip my wife did in 2017 about the pinball scene here in Edmonton. I completely forgot about it. She talks about the resurgence of competitive pinball and interviews a collector at his home. She ends up putting a high score on the guys new Hobbit pin, lol.
Video link & a few screenshots.
https://www.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=1220911[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

I have 32 of the 40 pages of posts indexed. Forged in Fire is indexed now also. Click Topic Index and then click "show all" at the bottom of the short summary and it will show the 400+ indexed posts so far.

Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:

Did you get that machine gun barrage of all those French films/shows nobody else has ever heard of several pages back? Technically, I'm sure they qualify but I prefer games in movies and TV shows that most people are familiar with.

Look at the in-progress alphabetized list on page 39 or the topic index at the top of the page. The foreign stuff is there, too. It not like people can't find those movies if they want to see them, so important for completion's sake.

Quoted from Rolls-Royce:

Vireland, this is an amazing help for this Thread brother!... I think that each new "50" page we should copy/paste the list.

I've asked Robin if it's possible to implement an alpha sort on a key post index as an option. IF that's done, problem solved, the key post index will always have an alpha sort option and be current in real time.

6 more pages to go and I'll have everything indexed and I can start cleaning up the duplicates, etc.

Quoted from Jackontherocks:

Thanks, looks like I started a good topic years ago

A 7 year thread is a pretty great accomplishment.

EDIT: Over 500 entries posted through 4/12 are now in the topic index - that's everything. The alpha-sorted list is in my post on page 39. Now I just have to clean up duplicates, which is probably 5%-10% or so of the total list.

On Disney+ ENCORE show, the Fiddler on the Roof episode, one of the participants is a "tenured pinball tech" (which clearly means route tech since the targets on the Funhouse they show him wiping are FILTHY) at Walt's in Highland Park, CA.

https://pinside.com/pinball/map/where-to-play/11193-walt-s-bar-los-angeles-ca

In the show, they show a Funhouse, Earthshaker, Fathom and some Gottlieb EMs. The pins on pin map have changed since then, though. The show is TERRIBLE from what I've seen, but my daughter watches it and was excited to see pinball pop up in that episode unexpectedly.
disney-encore1 (resized).jpgdisney-encore1 (resized).jpgdisney-encore2jpg (resized).jpgdisney-encore2jpg (resized).jpg

Quoted from Mardi-Gras-Man:

Here's one more picture (see post #1197) from the 1967 german movie "69 Liebesspiele" featurig Williams' 1958 Soccer "Kick-Off"[quoted image]

If you break out the movies and screenshots I did NOT index in post 1197, I can index the other ones. It needs to be one movie and pictures per post so I can keypost them separately. With this one I've keyposted two from that post, but there were like 5 in that one post and I can only key post one, so you have three that are unreported as far as the index is concerned.

#2026 4 years ago

So, some good news from Robin here on Pinside. He thinks he should be able to implement an alpha sort option for the topic index, meaning the movie/tv show Topic Index will always be available in alphabetical order once he gets it in.

So, Charles Bronson in The Mechanic with a Tropic Isle is not worth highlighting or adding to the list.
OK, I'll keep posting oddball ones as I see them, and you can keep on ignoring them.

Did you post a picture? Picture is required to be keyposted to the index. I didn't see a post for The Mechanic with a picture.

There's probably 10-20% more games than are keyposted simply because no one posted a picture with the callout to verify that there was a pin and what it was. If that bothers people, they can be a hero and go back through all those text-only posts then make a post with a picture, but that hero is not me. Keyposting this whole thread to index the 500 games with pictures was my contribution.

PS - We actually have two Star Trek keyposts for this same episode/scene. Can we get the extra one removed?

Left that Star Trek Voyager alone for now. The oldest instance has much better explanation, but a small picture. The one from a couple months ago has much better pictures, but no text/explanation. Which to delete? Ideally, I could merge the posts, but that's not possible. So I have left it alone. Anyone have an opinion about how to proceed in cases like this?

Actually this is for Star Trek (the original series). Posts 209 and 841 are both about the exact same episode/scene (S2E17).
While I'm at it, I notice the Twin Peaks entry has question marks for the season/episode. The shots are from S2E9 (Arbitrary Law) and S2E19 (Variations on Relations). I suspect those games show up in bunch more episodes since that's a frequent location in the show.

Fixed those, thanks.

It was episode 1 of Season 3, "Manchester - Part 1". It was in the foreground of a long tracking shot in a bar, and then could be seen in the background a couple of other times.

It was Season 3 Episode 2, according to Netflix. Got the shot, but it's really a dark shot so the translite is blown out.

Taking the shotgun away from Elmer Fudd in the new Looney Tunes on HBO is a PERFECT example of going too far. He's a HUNTER, for god's sake. It's not like he's hunting with an AR-15.

So Elmer's shotgun is bad, but dynamite in the mouth is ok? It makes no sense. Same thing with the ET re-edit where they took the guns away from the government guys and it was ridiculous, so they put them back.

Editors, are we not going to add this one for some reason?

Distracted by the boobies and forgot to add it. It's there now.

Prior mentions were likely not added due to lack of pictures. No pictures, no index entry.

This isn't my thread (I just did the work to add all the entries and make the index) so I can't say concretely, but I think the picture rule should be limited to just pictures because they are stored here. Links to videos often break later when they're taken down or moved whereever they're linked to. If only pictures are allowed, there will never be broken links to videos and if you want to look up a video there will be a picture and enough information to look it up on google as needed. So, I need to ask the OP about this change that I think makes sense.

#2379 3 years ago
Quoted from pinwiztom:

I think you need to add posts #2358 and #2364 to the Bad News Bear key posts list
as they have different view perspectives with more games shown and also posts surrounding
those posts have actual pin ID info. Whereas post #799 has no pin ID info.

One entry in the index, usually the first mention with a picture. If we're changing the rules to the best mention (clearest picture, most detail), then that needs to be agreed upon. Multiple entries for the same movie/tv/video/whatever will get too confusing and make the index too large over time. I know there are likely still some dupes I didn't catch in the index, but they're accidental and will be removed if I run across them.

After discussion with the OP, from here forward, only picture posts local to pinside (uploaded with the post) will be added to the index so we don't end up with broken links in the thread when outside links are changed/removed.

Also, I don't think that is a Tornado foosball table (the best, IMO), but definitely the style I grew up on with a single goalie and elevated corners (they also had glass playfields). Quoted from DanQverymuch:

There's got to be a better way.

I think we're pretty much at the limits of what this board can do without significant changes. A year ago there was no way to see what shows had pinball machines on them - the index wasn't ordered by show. Robin made that change and it really is great, but I don't see the whole board functionality getting changed even more to satisfy the wants of one thread on it.

#2610 3 years ago
Quoted from DanQverymuch:

One little ol' flag (e.g. *, though a check mark might be better), to indicate whether the noted game(s) have been identified, could simply be added to the already free-form text field with absolutely zero board functionality modification required, much less "the whole board functionality getting changed even more to satisfy the wants of one thread on it."

Find the volunteer that's going to find that information for 600 games already indexed. I indexed them all, but I'm not doing this because it's still not very useful beyond what's here now. Even if there's a check mark, you would still have to go through the thread to find what the games actually were, same as now.

#2612 3 years ago
Quoted from DanQverymuch:

Are we trying to identify the games, or not?

That's a question for the other people in this thread. I think it's more of just a running list of where pinball is seen in media, with the identification of the games being a secondary mini-game that happens around the time of the original posted pictures.

#2616 3 years ago
Quoted from DanQverymuch:

So having wasted my time thus, I sort of lost the satisfaction from finding them. Kinda sucked. Then I come up with a brilliant idea to do something to save people (who just want to help by the way) time digging for sightings to ID, no site functionality modifications required. You blew it off.
It only makes sense to save people time searching for themselves whether a show's games have been identified.
I do realize that this set of circumstances might be rare; maybe the vast majority have complete IDs. I think it's worth going through the thread one more time to find out, and give others the courtesy of knowing, too. I volunteered to do just that, we'll see what Robin says.

I asked the OP before I volunteered to index the whole thread, because it was his thread, after all. He was cool with it, so I did. But that's the line for me. I've kept the index current, but that's as much as I'm doing here.

No one's stopping you from spending the time to do what you said you think will be beneficial here. So, as long as it's cool with the OP of this thread, pin on your badge and go to work.

I always wondered about this also. I did some searching, it’s hard to find out a lot about it. I found this web page, I think the answer is in there somewhere if you are willing to slog through it all. The Conclusion at the very end is interesting.
https://rodriqueslaw.com/blog/how-use-brands-and-products-film/

Or, if people want to save the extreme amount of scrolling on that page to even get to the bottom, here's the summary:

"In general, it is not necessary to blur the logos and products of brands in films. There are several limitations on a trademark holder’s ability to successfully assert its trademark rights to prevent the unauthorized use of its trademark in a works of art. How the product is portrayed makes a huge difference for trademark owners, but it does not require filmmakers to seek consent for every use of a mark in his film. The motion picture industry would be severely crippled if trademark owners can use their marks to stop real products being shown in films, or even just in films which are not to their liking.

When you do see producers blurring out logos or brand names, it may be because they are trying to avoid an uncertain, lengthy, and expensive trademark litigation between competing parties that have unequal resources. But this can have disastrous chilling effects on artistic freedom. So sometimes it is worth the risk to leave the brands and products in, especially if a particular trademark is central to your character and plot, and if the mark is essential to the message you want to convey in your film."

Well, ideally check the key posts first, but sometimes you can sneak a duplicate past the bouncers like someone did a year ago, getting a key post for the pins in "Grown Ups" despite it being already keyposted three years ago.

(I wasn't going to say anything, but that recent post gave me the perfect opening.)

If you see a duplicate in the index, let me know and I'll take out the newer one. SOMETIMES if the older one has a really crappy screen grab and the newer dup has a pristine one, I'll delete the crappier one. But I try to keep the oldest one as the one that gets keyposted.

At the top of any page in this thread, click on "Topic Index" then click on "keypost summary" and it makes a sorted list alphabetized with every pin that has a picture that's been posted. Very easy to scan that before posting.

#3727 1 year ago
Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:

By 6 minutes - come on dude!

The only thing missing was after clicking "TOPIC INDEX" to click on "KEYPOST SUMMARY" to sort the list alphabetically. If they've never used any topic index, it won't be sorted alphabetically by default unless they do that the first time.

#3735 1 year ago
Quoted from Manhattan:

I think the easiest way to confirm previous submissions is to enter the show/movie into the "search key words in topic" tool located just below and to the right of the thread title on every page. This way submissions that have not been added to the index show up as well.

This is a bad idea because there are many cases where a show is called out without a photo, or with a video that's a no-no, and if that happens it's not added to the index. So you may get a hit on the show, but it's not indexed (for a reason). Best to use the index.

EDIT: Beaten

#3740 1 year ago
Quoted from screaminr:

"Find in topic " is quicker and easier and more accurate than key post-index .
If you get a " hit " on a game , you scroll through the posts and see if there is a picture of the game you have .
There are many pins that are named and pictured but not listed in the key index .
Key index only shows you the first pin posted but in find in topic , you can see all the photos related to the movie or show .
For example , if I use the key post to look up Goodfellas , you only see one picture but if I use the find in topic , I can see there's a second machine pictured . So I wouldn't bother posting that , even though it's not a key post.
[quoted image][quoted image]

It really depends on your goal.

If you're just needing to know if a show is posted with a picture already, index is the way to go.

Quoted from screaminr:

There are many pins that are named and pictured but not listed in the key index.

The only pins named or pictured but not in the index should be posts about shows without pictures, and posts with pictures after the first post for show with a picture or pictures.

#3743 1 year ago
Quoted from screaminr:

No it's not .
For example , if you look up index ,sorority babes , you'll see one picture .
But if look at , find in topic , you will see another .[quoted image][quoted image]

No it's not what? The fact that someone posted ANOTHER picture later is irrelevant if you just want to see if a particular show has already been called out and listed.

If you want to see all potential posts about a particular movie or show episode, then search is fine. But I don't think that's the majority of people coming to this thread.

#3748 1 year ago
Quoted from screaminr:

So are you saying that don't it doesn't matter if there are different pins shown in a movie or show.
You don't want to see all the pins in a movie or show .
You're only interested that a pinball machine was mentioned in whatever show / movie and it's irrelevant if there's more than one .

Pretty much. I mean, doubles could be added to allow for different pics in the same move in different posts, but I think that would be pretty cluttered relative to the value it adds to the thread. Dunno. It really depends on what users in the thread want. There's certainly nothing technical preventing it.

Quoted from girloveswaffles:

However, you can easily miss a movie or TV title because it listed under T (for "The...").
And it's not consistent. Even in the picture of the list you posted, "The Fugitive is listed as "Fugitive", but there's a lot of titles listed under "The"
[quoted image]
So if I go to look up "The Enforcer" (which I have listed) Where do I look? Under THE Enforcer, or Enforcer?
Anything that starts with The should be listed more like this: (Enforcer, The) , or else half the list would end up under "The".

I'm gradually converting the list over to "title, the" for affected titles. That's why the list seems inconsistent. It's a work in progress.

Quoted from ourdave76:

PinMonk
Now that the index is current what is the best approach to searching for a pin or movie title to eliminate duplicate posting?

Once you're on the topic index, just click on keypost summary to sort the list alphabetically (once, it remembers every time after that), then look for the title. Or, once you are showing the whole index, you can also CTRL-F search for part of the name of the show to jump to that spot on the list if it's there.

Overall it's gotten much better with duplicates as people get used to checking the list first. Also, way less posts of links to youtube videos, OR if people do, they also include a screenshot which will persist even if the youtube disappears in the future. Just a screenshot is the best plan. However, I will keypost ones with both, I will not keypost ones with just youtube because having posts with broken links in the future is no fun/more work. Also once I get all the "The" titles corrected with ", The" that will help, too.

Less clean way of doing it. If you use the topic index the shows are grouped together without the clutter of the posts that may not be the one you're looking for. Topic Index is the fastest way to see if a show you're looking for is there, especially if there are a lot of hits like American Pickers, etc, where topic search could be much more cluttered to scan.

Search American Pickers using topic search, then compare that to using the Topic Index, sorted by Keypost summary. Night and day difference in terms of finding whether the episode you're considering adding is already there.

Quoted from Manhattan:

What is the purpose of changing backglass for movie/tv show?

I think it's overkill (especially for companies that are LONG GONE), but basically to eliminate any copyright/trademark issues from manufacturers that may not want their named product featured in a certain show or affiliated with certain storylines (serial killer that's a fan of Stern pinball and has pins in his dungeon, etc). Just avoids any after-shooting headaches and legal issues.

#4184 1 year ago
Quoted from sparky672:

Not only that, but bigger companies usually want to get a license fee if their logo or brand is shown. That's why you're more likely to see real brands/logos in big-budget movie productions (more realism) vs. lower budget TV shows littered with generic products.

Product placement works the opposite way, though. The product maker pays to be in the show. But generic-izing products is way more common.
