lol, it's been like 10 years since season one. If you still haven't watched The Wire, you kind of deserved it!

Sorry for the necro-reply, but it just so happened that I read this thread and your spoiler just as I was about to watch that episode! Now, granted I was way overdue for watching The Wire, but what about those who were too young to watch it when it was new? But mainly I have to wonder why the spoiler in the first place, did you think anyone would think he was playing Whirlwind AFTER he was killed?

Season 1 of the Wire! WW. This guy was enjoying it moments before he was captured, tortured, and then murdered. :-/
Hopefully his last game was a good one.

Too funny. I just (https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/pinball-in-movies-or-tv-shows-name-a-game-you-have-seen-in-the-background/page/8#post-2892952) yelled at someone for making the same unnecessary spoiler like three years ago (https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/pinball-in-movies-or-tv-shows-name-a-game-you-have-seen-in-the-background/page/2#post-470274), back when the thread was new!

And again, I must ask: why the spoiler, were you afraid someone might think he was playing it after he died?

Actually, you at least used it to set up the "last game" comment.

The first guy had a much better pic, though!

In last night's new episode of "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" (Season 12, episode 4), there were two games visible in a mirror. One was a BK2K with replacement backglass art saying "Knight's Lair." A decal, probably, since most of the art was standard, just the middle was covered, and although the game was on the bg was unlit. The other had only the left edge visible and I could not identify it, but someone might recognize it.

Didn't have time to read this whole thread so not sure if anyone's mentioned this before but in the Steven Segal movie "Out for justice" when he's in the basement after hours club asking "Anybody know why Ritchie did Bobby Lupo?' There is an EBD 81 version in the place.

I had time (20 seconds) to SEARCH the thread and it was indeed mentioned 3 years ago. Don't feel bad, it was mentioned again just a week after that! And you did add the version info, that's cool.

That same Galaxy has shown up in several shows (and pictures of it are thruout this topic).
Forceflow posted a picture of it in an episode of Agents of Sheild a while back (post #461) and Darkwizard posted a picture of it in an episode of Criminal Minds (post # 216).

Interesting, and I guess I never read through this thread, I just post after doing a search to avoid sighting dupes.

Must be owned by a prop shop, ready to go with no licensing issues! Might be fun to hunt it down, find out who owns it and what it makes, maybe get a selfie with it. It's a celebrity!

Boxes piled on top of it, for shame!

Thanks, I got tired of all the work trying to find it on my phone. (Fat fingers!)

That side art face the other kid was blocking would have been pretty recognizable, so I have to wonder if that and the boxes were deliberate to avoid licensing issues, even on this old a game.

Just noticed in reruns, on TBS's The Guest Book, the titty bar Chubbys has, appropriately enough, a Williams Swinger.

Not sure in which episode it was revealed, I didn't catch it until the recap at the beginning of the season finale.

Found a couple in an old Law and Order SVU rerun from 2005 ("Identity"). Two rethemed pins, "Muerte y Destrución" which means "death and destruction" (but ought to have two c's) and another we don't get to see except for a dinosaur on the side. Sorry, my Tivo buffer ran out before I got a shot of the second.

I note there have been pins sighted in four episodes of That 70's Show, but I just found the That 70's Show mother lode!

In Season One, Episode One, the pilot, no less! Their local hangout, The Hub, originally had four, count 'em, four(!) pins, and a bat game besides!

I recognize Little Chief, Flip Flop, and Travel Time, as well as Deluxe Official Baseball, but the second one from the left has me stumped.

Update: I got really clever and did a regexp search on ipdb for games that end in three letter words and voila! Found it! It's one I never heard of, Op-Pop-Pop.

If anyone has some time to kill and a keen eye to go with their 80s pinball knowledge, there must be something like eight pins in the arcade in the first episode of Halt and Catch Fire, currently available on Netflix.

They're in the background and blurry, though. I'm pretty sure one is a Silverball Mania. I could noodle out more, probably, but someone with instant recognition of that era's games could do it faster.

There are two scenes in the arcade to work with, so that should help. Another one I recognized was Eight Ball Deluxe.

Quoted from schudel5:

Haha! Several days later they had another Gottlieb Volcano in a showcase showdown. They must have been desperate to sell those things by any means necessary. So far those were the only 2 pinball machines I've seen on TPIR and both were a GTB Volcano.

My best CL find ever was supposed to be a NIB Whirlwind that the guy's father had won years previously on TPIR, but I noticed the box looked opened on the pic he sent, so I asked for a pic of the game front in the box (which was a Williams WW box), and it turned out to be a Gottlieb Rock! I wonder how that happened. Was the show's crew rotating prize pins through their breakroom? Did someone swap them where he had it stored for 20 years? Or maybe someone was funnin' me, it was a strange non-deal however it happened.

@schudel5, if you ever see that WW on a TPIR rerun, I'd love to know about it, just to know someone wasn't trying to make a fool out of me.

Obligatory on-topic material: Came here to post about a dark TAF, barely noticable in a dingy bar on the Sopranos, but I was not the first to spot it.

There's a particular second-season episode of Star Trek TOS called "A Piece of the Action" where Kirk and co. are being held captive in the storeroom on a planet run by gangsters and they have a variety of pinball machines in there in various states of disrepair... but I have no idea which pins they are. Most of them seem to be identical save for one. Here's a couple screencaps:
[quoted image]
[quoted image]
Anyone have any idea which pins these are?

Quoted from HighVoltage:

Caught some of the Star Trek marathon this weekend. On episode "A Piece of the Action" there's a bunch of woodrails in Okmyx's place, can't make them out though...

Quoted from bob_e:

STAR TREK S2 E17 A Piece of the Action. Kirk Spock and McCoy are being held in a store room. There are several wood rail pins and a slot machine in the back ground. I could not read the titles. But the story had them on a planet that used a book about the Chicago Mobsters as a basis for their society. The cars were from the late 20s and early 30s Pins were not period correct.

Quoted from LeChuck:

Old post, but I just noticed these and saw that they weren’t ID’d yet:
Majors - 1941 (Chicago Coin 1941) - there are three of these in the room
Twenty Grand (Williams 1952)
I wonder if that SUPER JACKPOT game by the door is real or not.
PS - We actually have two Star Trek keyposts for this same episode/scene. Can we get the extra one removed?
PPS - It’s more work but it would be neat to have some way to tag games as needing an ID. With all this time at home it’s fun to hunt these down.

Quoted from gjm:

This episode of "Star Trek" was named " A Piece of the Action". Kirk, McCoy & Spock are being held captive by the gangsters in this picture.
Hard to tell what the names of the pins are and the machine off to the right...??
[quoted image]

Wow. Just spent an hour searching ipdb, freaking nailed the IDs, then searched the thread for "twenty" just in case and there they were, buried in post 2062. (Next to last quoted post.)

There's got to be a better way.

Ah well, got in some IDing practice, anyway! It was fun finding them, even if someone else did first.

#2609 3 years ago
Quoted from PinMonk:

I think we're pretty much at the limits of what this board can do without significant changes. A year ago there was no way to see what shows had pinball machines on them - the index wasn't ordered by show. Robin made that change and it really is great, but I don't see the whole board functionality getting changed even more to satisfy the wants of one thread on it.

One little ol' flag (e.g. *, though a check mark might be better), to indicate whether the noted game(s) have been identified, could simply be added to the already free-form text field with absolutely zero board functionality modification required, much less "the whole board functionality getting changed even more to satisfy the wants of one thread on it."

#2611 3 years ago
Quoted from PinMonk:

Find the volunteer that's going to find that information for 600 games already indexed. I indexed them all, but I'm not doing this because it's still not very useful beyond what's here now. Even if there's a check mark, you would still have to go through the thread to find what the games actually were, same as now.

So everyone with time to kill who wants to go hunting should have to dig through each entry that way, searching whether the games are identified? Like I thought I did earlier, only to find them too late in a post that didn't even name the episode (due to quotes not counting as hits)?

Are we trying to identify the games, or not?

#2614 3 years ago

Do birdwatchers only care where they saw a bird, not what bird?

Quoted from PinMonk:

That's a question for the other people in this thread. I think it's more of just a running list of where pinball is seen in media, with the identification of the games being a secondary mini-game that happens around the time of the original posted pictures.

"Pinball in movies or TV shows? Name a game you have seen in the background?"

Does that look familiar? (It's the thread title.) To me, that does not say "Name a show or movie you have seen a game in, we don't care what the game is." It says name the game.

Quoted from gjm:

Hard to tell what the names of the pins are and the machine off to the right...??

See? That's half the fun of it. gjm specifically lamented the non-identification when posting about Star Trek earlier, and you helpfully posted "already in the index." So, in good faith, I looked at the Key Post. No game names. So I diligently searched for "piece action" and none of the posts about the episode have the game names, either! Oh, cool! I can contribute! (And I love TOS! I couldn't believe the sighting was incomplete!) So I proceed to spend an hour discovering the game names for myself, which was in itself satisfying, and only my double-checking search for "twenty" in the thread revealed that I had wasted my time, someone beat me to it soon after the LAST time someone reposted the episode.

So having wasted my time thus, I sort of lost the satisfaction from finding them. Kinda sucked. Then I come up with a brilliant idea to do something to save people (who just want to help by the way) time digging for sightings to ID, no site functionality modifications required. You blew it off.

It only makes sense to save people time searching for themselves whether a show's games have been identified.

I do realize that this set of circumstances might be rare; maybe the vast majority have complete IDs. I think it's worth going through the thread one more time to find out, and give others the courtesy of knowing, too. I volunteered to do just that, we'll see what Robin says.

Understandable, we've all been there. Just change your flow from "get excited -> post" to "get excited -> check topic index -> if not there, post"

Well, ideally check the key posts first, but sometimes you can sneak a duplicate past the bouncers like someone did a year ago, getting a key post for the pins in "Grown Ups" despite it being already keyposted three years ago.

Not saying you should! But I just happened to discover the dupe when checking whether I was first, as I just spotted the pins in the movie myself, after David Spade mentioned it in his new special and I realized I had never seen it.

(I wasn't going to say anything, but that recent post gave me the perfect opening.)

Heh.. I only went back a page or two. Must have missed it. Doh!

Yes, you missed it two pages back.

Being a new show, of course one can't be expected to look through 72 pages first. Even for old shows or movies that's excessive.

That's why we have a key post index. But even that takes multiple clicks to open up, then you get to wade through 900 entries. True, it's in alphabetical order, but it's still a slog.
