I apologize for humblebragging, BUT I just had a surreal experience.

Last weekend I took the game me and my kids restored last year, to the Louisville Arcade Expo. It was filmed by a local news crew and we gave a short interview which aired on the Louisville CBS affiliate last Sunday night. Cute!

Then yesterday (Thursday) I was on Skynet News and in the "personalized algorithm" section (which I mostly ignore so as not to let them figure anything else out) a thumbnail caught my eye for looking oddly familiar. Except it was in Omaha. But then on refresh it went to Boston. And I've been told NY State and California.... so oooooops, it seems MY pinball machine was put on national TV news syndication. Yay?!

https://www.watchstitch.com/article/its-the-nostalgia-arcade-expo-gives-parents-kids-chance-to-bond-over-classic-games/26743074

Despite this, I won't let it go to my head. Although I guess I can't fix that scratch in the backglass now because it PROVES my machine is the same "as seen on TV"

Not a humblebrag at all. I only loosely followed your restore thread and it was great to see your progress and even better to see you guys interviewed with your Bad Cats.

There was a pin in last week's episode of The Walking Dead when they were sneaking into a theater to steal a projection bulb.

girloveswaffles = master pinball machine identifier

#1422 2 years ago
Quoted from gliebig:

I forgot to watch it.

I saw part of it. the game was "stocked" with flat steel in the playfield area and there was W-1 round stock inside the legs.
The cabinet of the game was repainted white.

I just saw Rick Alverson's new film THE MOUNTAIN. Jeff Goldblum plays a doctor in the 1950s that performs lobotomies at mental institutions. There's a scene where he's playing a 1947 Ballyhoo with a Coed next to it. Makes me happy when production designers / set decorators actually take the time to find era-appropriate games.

#1424 2 years ago

Watching Carnival of Souls(1962), the Rifftrax version, noticed this in the background. It shows up halfway to the end of movie. This is the only picture I could find. In the colorized version I watched it was mostly green. You only see this end of the machine. Trippy flick.

Too bad they weren’t playing Attack from Mars - that irony would have been quite the Easter Egg for us pinheads.

The game in the notorious scene was a Space Invaders, but re-themed by the production with a basketball theme. Can't imagine Bally (or Atari) would ever want their license seen in that setting.

They used a Gottlieb Sunset 1962 which has the 5 captive balls in the center of the playfield like the much hated Williams Darling/Jubliee
Playfield platics were replaced with bars of 5160 steel
Legs were cut and then W-1 steel welded in them.
The game itself took no real damage.

That is a great film. Only seen it once or twice. But, its worth the watch. I just want to rewatch the classics with a girlfriend... Sadly the last few I had hated horror movies. That's almost as big of a no no for me as if they hated pinball.

#1435 2 years ago

Woh woh, well here's an obscure one(more like super obscure)that I noticed about three or four years ago. In what is probably the only time anime is ever going to be mentioned in this thread(I can think of maybe one other instance, but it's more of a reference to the directors other work and the machine's not even real). And what is also probably the only time on the internet this has ever even been pointed out about this particular show before. I give you an anime from the mid to late 80s that features a scene in an arcade with no less then four references to real pinball machines in the background. I'll let you guys figure them out yourself. The one on the left is obviously the easiest. With the one on the right taking me a good half an hour to figure and then feeling stupid when I finally did get it. Bonus points if you can name the show(f-ing impossible).

The guy who drew this background was probably having a good time (or more likely just working off a reference photo). Lawyers probably would have had something funny to say about this too if it was pointed out to them back then.

I'm no fan of gore filled horror (unless it's over the top and so bad/it's funny type). I really appreciate the atmospheric suspense type movies, which this definitely is. I love Hitchcock's work and you can certainly see this movie's influence on other films like Suspiria. I go out of my way around Halloween time to find movies like this. They certainly stick with you. In this case, I've been binge watching MST & Rifftrax and it came on.

The show? I think the subtitles says it all. But it looks vaguely familiar.

I hate goreno. I hate it. Its morally reprehensible. And a good horror movie at its core is still a morality tale. Friday the 13th, Halloween. Can make the case that they're showing what teen sex and drug use does. Gets ya killed by a maniac with a huge knife... Also the Freddy movies are a bit old testament sins of the father. I'm just lightly touching on the subject here... But, there is more to it.
But, I find films like saw and hostel to lack morals and suspense. And just exist to shock. I love gore. Big fan of Tom Savini. In my youth I wanted to be a horror fx artist... But, the medium is dying and basically dead. So I love monster and horror effects and to a certain extent GORE! But, it has to have its context. And just butchery for the sake of it. No thank you.

If you like those films great. More power to you. You can watch them all you want. I will not.
I love the classic Hammer films as peter cushing and mr Lee(a man who loved heavy metal btw) are two of my favorite actors of all time. I own most of their work. And all of Hammer's classics. I'm excited that Quartermass and the Pit is coming to bluray. Can't wait. As I only got a bad bootleg dvd of it.

Might want to check out Horror Hotel if you never saw it. Just great atmosphere in that film. But, truth be told one of my all time favorite horror movies with horror in the title is Horror Express. Film is a gonzo horror film that feels like a hammer film on steroids. Just a great film.

The latest season of Arrested Development has 3 reskinned machines. Here's one of them. They put in the EM sound effects even when nobody is playing them.

No idea what the "Wrench" is. Not sure if it's a reference to something within AD.

WHOA! I am literally watching this right now. "Wrench" is a show-within-the-show sitcom about a detective named "Frank Wrench" (played by Rob Corddry) who has a huge weapon; it's a parody of the awesome show "Sledgehammer" from the 80s

I swear they switched machines around in the episodes.

I'm also convinced Flight 2000 is one of a handful machines the prop department of tv shows have.

Quoted from xTheBlackKnightx:

The new AMC Series, "Lodge 49", has an Aztec dominantly displayed and another pinball game "Out of Order" covered in the tavern room. The mystery cabinet is clearly visible (only backbox is covered with a sheet), but I would have to research which game, as it looks original.

I sold those 2 games to them back in 11/2017. I could tell you what the other game is but I'd have to kill you. It does work but they "finally fix it" in a future episode.

Couple movies I've seen recently. Not sure if they've been mentioned already?

The Toy with Richard Pryor and Jackie Gleason. The kid has a Volcano, Haunted House and a Mars God of War in his bedroom

The Rose with Bette Midler. Towards the end of the movie she stops at a honky tonk bar and there's a unidentified pin in the background.
