Howdy peeps,

I'm from So. Cal but working in KC for a few days, so of course, I checked out the pinmap and see that I am near a dive bar...."403 Club". Gonna check it out! Ghostbusters and Full Throttle plus about 8 more games. If anyone reads this and is there tonight and sees a dude that looks like "he ain't from around here", that will probably be me

Please report back how it is. My company's HQ is there and that's what I'll be looking for if I have to go out.

403 Club in KCK and Pizza West/Knub's Pub in Shawnee are the spots to hit.

#4 7 years ago

The owner of both places are Pinsiders who keep their pins in great shape both on and off route.

Up-down has 10 machines. It's fun if you like to spend very little money to play. Machines are not the quality of either of the two other places but for me that presents a nice challenge. Only local place that has an AFM to play as well.

403 is a pinball spot that happens to be a bar; good people running 403 and also the pins out at Pizza West / Knubs Pub. The brothers who run PW and Knub's are also very good dudes. Up/Down is very popular as a bar / arcade and can be very crowded at times. Plan accordingly.

Reporting back> Went to 403 Club. The lineup and condition of the machines was GREAT!! Got to play GB, Full Throttle, Mustang, and Avatar for the first time. Now I see what the hype is about with GB.....that game is freakin' SWEET! So is Full Throttle. Avatar was a lot of fun too, had blue superbands that I thought looked really nice and it played great as well...fun machine IMO. Mustang was pretty cool too.
I went to Up Down last night and it is as what has been mentioned. I have an AFM at home but played the one there anyways... love that game. Nice that all the games are a quarter. Also nice eye candy! Lot's of babes. if I was a single dude I'd have to get my game on! The other places around town I still need to check out.
On a side note, my peeps in Ca. of course were saying "get some bbq while your there". I did, went to Gates BBQ. As soon as you walk in, someone shouts to you from behind the counter..loudly.."can I help you??", at first I didn't even know she was talking to me. Long story short, I thought it SUCKED...I get MUCH better BBQ in Ca. then from Gates.

Gates can be hit or miss. Try Kansas City joes Very good quality. And as stated get to pizza west and knubs. Enjoy

Glad you enjoyed the Full Throttle, that is my machine.

403 is where most of the tournament players in KC play. We have weekly wednesday night league as well as a double elimination tournament that starts at 9:00 every week. They also do a large tournament the first Saturday of every month.

There is about 4 of us that own games at 403, all pinsiders, and we strive to keep the rotation constantly moving, with good and new games always coming in.

We should have a Hobbit Smaug edition coming in to replace Metallica in a couple of weeks. When they release the GB premium, the owner of that machine will be swapping the pro out for the premium. We have an Alien coming sometime in the fall, as well as a Big Lebowski and a Rob Zombie.

Gates is... not anyone's favorite that I know. Gates has tradition, but Joe's Kansas City, Jack Stack, Woodyard, Roscoe's or nearly anywhere else has better BBQ in my opinion.

I was lucky enough to attend the World Series of BBQ with Jayhawkai a few years ago, was awesome!!!!

I am a Jack Stack guy myself which is influenced by my wife enjoying it as well. I went to this new place last month off of a tip from a friend and it might be the best BBQ I have ever had. It is called Q39 and is about 10 minutes away from up-down off of the rainbow exit on I-35. Head to 39th street and take a left. About a mile and half down the road on the left hand side. Best ribs I have ever eaten. The sauce is so good that I would shoot it out of the saucer .

The AFM at up-down has a lean to it which I think makes it harder but I have never played a good one. I agree with your other assessment, where was this place when I was single? Anyway, good people and decent machines with prices that can't be beat.

Any word on when TBL will be there? I will definitely make an appearance for that

There will be another soon.

Welcome to Kansas City! You've checked out some good places so far. I agree with others that Gates can be really hit or miss. Over not too far from 403 is Slaps BBQ. They run out of food so go for lunch and get the ribs. I live out close to Pizza West/Knubs. If you have a car and don't mind a 30 minute drive they have a great pin lineup between the two places, which are in the same strip mall. They also have pretty good food. I've been going to Pizza West to play Ghostbusters a decent amount lately to survive until my Premium arrives.

Let us know if you have any other city-related questions. Happy to help.

Oh how I miss Zarda's bbq ribs in KC....

#17 7 years ago

I really like Gates sauce as well as Bryant's and Joe's, but there's nothing at Gates that's the best IMO. I think Joe's has the best pulled pork and fries, Jack Stack has the best beans, Bryant's for the brisket, and maybe McGonigle's for ribs. Because of that I don't find myself going to Gates often.

I think it's a rule in KC to be an asshole if you work @ a BBQ restaurant

Same thing happened to me & the Arthur Bryants.

Some dude yells "what u want" as soon as I step in the F'n place.

The food was average

They just started shipping the LE preorders. I am in on a standard, so I am thinking maybe sometime in the fall? We will definitely advertise it once it comes in though

Recently discovered the 403 Club and it's the best! All the machines are in near perfect condition and many are modded with color DMDs as well. Spent all yesterday afternoon playing Iron Man, Rob Zombie, and Tron.

Thinking about going to a monthly tournament some time even though I have no skills.
