Quoted from matt_adams:

I took that photo in April. I can't say where it is as its part of a large horde we are trying to do a deal on, here's another taster......

Please, please save them! No matter how bad they are at least salvage some parts!
I'm of the folks who love digging through and finding wrecks like that!

It's a great feeling knowing that even though those games have suffered a fate worse than death, they can save other games and pieces of it can still live on.

I, as well as others in this thread I'm sure, enjoy the fun and excitement that comes with buying some junk and picking out gems.

Also a bit of a side note, but you should try recording any serial numbers of those games you can and putting them on the IPSND. I notice not many people do this it seems, even when they have games in great shape for years. I have come across just a few games that were just scraps and parts, and I record their numbers and try to indicate "yep it existed and now it's gone."
Not sure how anyone else feels about that, I'd love to hear some opinions.

Quoted from toddtuckey:

Video was filmed in 2004 and posted in 2011....this is explained in titles on screen and in description that people never seem to read...no one wanted these games back then

Todd is a hero! Even when I first started a few months ago I saw that video and was like "WTF?!!?1"
and now I watch TNT every day and love them! Those guys fight the hard fight with the games they get in and Todd's running a business to make money!! He could take a dump in every cabinet he gives away if he wanted to! But he doesn't because he knows that nowadays people will fight for just the scraps and he helps out when he can!

At least it was a lot of crapper games too, nothing horribly rare. Not like those guys who smashed up the Star-Jet!

Here is another parts machine
Give me $400 and its yours

OMFG SPACE JAM! Gimme! :b Who wants the JP? we can split shipping

Quoted from benheck:

Whoever is holding a bunch of cheap Space Jam pins once the millennials start collecting is gonna hit pay dirt.

Very guilty. I don't get why people hate that movie. It was really corny and charming!

Yep, I already talked him In to selling it to me. That flight 2000 will fly again!

Thank you for saving it! If you don't want that BG let me know, it would make decent wall art

This is depressingly funny because that naval base was actually on my list of leads to pursue... I didn't know anyone and I had no way to get the Newfoundland but there were some YouTube videos and other Urban Exploring websites that had mentioned this place and it's stash of arcade machines. Due to its disused nature, lots of people were breaking in and such, (Mostly Vandalism but some Urbex) so I'd take a small bit of solace from the fact a great deal of those games WERE destroyed because they'd already BEEN destroyed by vandals... not terribly comforting but I mean hey, they weren't as much of a holy grail as that old ship raid in England.

Quoted from songofsixpence:

I had just finished resurrecting this HH, and had returned it to my customer, when it had an unfortunate meeting with a garage door.

Quoted from songofsixpence:

I wanted to show this story has a happy ending...
Ratchet straps and glue.

Pry out the nails

Replaced the back with luan

Cast fiberglass resin on the missing corner

My wife touched up the paint

All we need is a backglass (the glass was already ruined, it wasn't broken in this accident)

A great opportunity for the age old wisdom: NEVER TRANSPORT YOUR GAMES WITH THE HEADS ON!!
and
ALWAYS KNOW THE HEIGHT OF YOUR FREIGHT AND THE CLEARANCE!

My Dad drove tractor trailers for nearly a decade and more than once told me stories and showed pictures of guys who make it halfway across the country, then do something stupid like rip off the top of their trailer pulling into taco bell.

Glad you are a wizard and teleported that head back to a time before it met the garage door.

I was invited to make an offer on this a couple days back. I declined.

Definitely looks like it was in proximity to a fire, ash and probably some smoldering embers burned the playfield.

It’s not pinball but, still a ugly site!

Is that local to you?! If it's all out for free/scrap I'm sure lots of guys could use parts! I'd see if there are ang useful control panels for fighting games! Looks like there are some newish ones like Time Crisis and one of those Tekken tournement machines

Quoted from toyotaboy:

This still happens at TNT all the time. They claim stuff sits outside for months and nobody wants it
» YouTube video

They show their free stuff in all their videos. They always say "Look at the stuff being recycled this week!" and lots of people know about it but don't bother going. Eventually some scrapers come and take it

Comic relief aside, that is horrible really, and I feel bad for this guy. That’s a true nightmare...
I actually moved all my power tools to my outdoor garage because a friend just lost his entire house all because he had an old DeWalt battery charging and it shorted, exploded and burned down his entire house along with his antique firearm collection.

One of the leading causes of house fires are those 12v/18v battery chargers. That’s extremely eye-opening. The manufactures get away with it with those little tags that say “never charge unattended”

DON’T LET IT HAPPEN TO YOU! CHARGE THEM OUTSIDE, IN A SHED, ANYWHERE THAT’S NOT INSIDE! Even if you must charge inside, put them in the middle of a concrete floor away from any flammable materials.

Stay safe!

Funhouse with raised inserts, barn dust. Might take ball guides and wire harness and build up a funhouse with nicer parts
[quoted image]

Wow, was the whole game in a barn or just an old playfield? At least it can be a wallhanger

#1423 5 years ago
Quoted from ForceFlow:

Or, just don't leave them unattended...

True but typically you're not going to spend all the time in a room with the battery as it charges, it can take hours! Plus if it does explode and let's say you're sitting watching tv, you still need a fire extinguisher handy and will probably suffer some fire damage regardless! I'd say the true safe bet is a concrete floor away from flammable materials

I went and bought a Maximum Force from this really crappy, somewhat cryptic letgo ad. They mentioned other arcade machines but I wasn’t able to get out there for over a month.
This place was quite literally the middle of nowhere. No cell service, an EIGHT MILE DEAD END ROAD. All the signs of “you’re going to get murdered out here”
7D1D003B-2551-4619-B056-0AF256B51643.jpeg7D1D003B-2551-4619-B056-0AF256B51643.jpeg
Finally I get to this hillbilly heaven of a few ramshackle houses and folks having big bonfires on their front lawns.

On the side of the house there’s a pile stacked to the roof of absolutely destroyed games: Super Hang-On, a dual Time Crisis, two Silent Scopes, some Konami flying games. All smashed to pieces.

The only two games left are Maximum force and an abortion of an X-men vs Street Fighter (with a Big Buck Hunter gun attached for some reason)

When I asked WHY they destroyed the games, this was the pearl of wisdom I received: “Well they wasn’t working right so we’s figured tuh scrap em”

I asked if they had anymore pieces or any pinball parts and they said those had already been destroyed.
F41518C8-18E1-401F-9432-EF99A58818F0.jpegF41518C8-18E1-401F-9432-EF99A58818F0.jpeg
I was looking around the piles of arcade tragedy and found this poor, pathetic Seawitch burned beneath a flight simulator. I wanted to save what was left immediately and they told me “well that’s ‘er burn pit, but if yous really wannit, it’s yers”

If I had just came in a month sooner I could have saved even more.
3D0B8270-4C35-4189-8A52-742B9FE7428F.jpeg3D0B8270-4C35-4189-8A52-742B9FE7428F.jpeg
They smashed up over 30 arcade machines and a few pinball machines because they didn’t work and they figured nobody wanted them so they never even offered. I heard that several other brave souls ventured out before me and grabbed a game or two, but they weren’t as explorative as myself. Which is completely understandable because they also had a small pack of pit-bulls roaming the backyard and they weren’t terribly happy to see me.

All in all I never thought I’d be in this thread but here I am and let me tell you seeing this in personal was abysmal.

Now I understand the feeling. I could have possibly saved some more bits and pieces, but digging through all the destroyed cabs was just so damn disheartening.

#1447 5 years ago
Quoted from Colsond3:

^^ Kudos on saving what you did.
Playfield doesn’t look horrendous. Was it outside and rained on / exposed to the elements? Looks like the plastics and some other parts might be salvageable if the bottom and mechs are all rusted out.

It was outside in the rain and elements under the burn pile for a few weeks. They weren't sure exactly what they threw out when...
I tried to gently explain the whole concept to them but... these people only speak "Banjo"

They destroyed the other games because "they didn't work" and I was able to fix 2 of them simply by adjusting the v-sync and other adjustments on the monitors...

The Seawitch is in pretty good shape for the whole ordeal and I'm happy I was able to save it. I've gotten a surprising number of PMs so I'll have to take a closer look tonight. I was absolutely exhausted yesterday when I got it

I’ve seen this a few times... the light switch hack is so weird. It’s only like 4 inches from the stock position?? What’s the point?

#1535 5 years ago
Quoted from Colsond3:

Not at all. Obviously easier if one person holds the game up and another one slides the horse under the back legs. But it’s also simple to hold the game up with one hand and/or your knee briefly and slide it into place with your other hand or foot.
You’re really only holding the game up for a few seconds. I’ve seen old-school guys and operators that hold the damn game on their knee the entire time they are bolting in or unbolting the legs.

Recently did the knee thing, got one leg on, mid-way through screwing the second leg on, the leg fasteners in the cab gave out and I was stuck there with a 3 legged machine on my knee. Eventually I was able to reach into the neck and hold the fastener in and screw it in, which was very tricky. I was so sore after!

Quoted from epeabs:

Not exactly horror, but definately hacked. Just found this in my Flash Gordon I picked up. One bolt semi holding it and the rest duct taped in place somewhat. Supposed to be two of the speakers on the right side.

Sorry don't know if this is posted before? Im in schock

I like that they took out all the mechs in the backbox and cab for the EM, but then for some reason they cut a brand new NBA in half???
Someone in production was clearly an EM collector, gave them his old cab and trashed playfield but took the valuable parts needed for later repairs. Then saw the NBA gave it the stink eye :b

In December 2018, I took a road trip to Lloyd's Coin-Op Warehouse. Along the way, I stopped at 3 other ops. One of them had really filthy dirty em playfields sitting in their basement just rotting away.
Check out this web page I just made for the trip and scroll past Lloyd's pictures, there will be a heading saying "end of Coin-Op Warehouse pics", just a little past half way.

That’s awesome! The rotting playfields and games are sad though, did you bother even asking what they wanted for them? I mean I’d buy them to possibly help out another collector, but knowing ops, they probably wanted silly money for ‘em

[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Why on earth...
Just the front panel??? I don’t understand the reasoning?! I’d tried kicking one out before when I had to rebuild a rotten cabinet, and also for a cabinet that exploded.
Both times those panels were really damn hard to separate from the sides. I mean full body weight would not break them. Took pry bars and half an hour of working it over to break them off!!

#1750 5 years ago
Quoted from hazmat7719:

I have had to get rid of a few cabinets that were just too far gone as well. I wish that I had the time to make stencils of the artwork before they went to the dump.

I actually used the sides of a rotten cab as wall art, looks kinda cool if you clean it up decently. Seal it and nail it up, now you can have even more pinball machines, on your walls!

Basically yes, the games were parted out for one reason or another and I bought the cabinet/side panel so I could make up to nine of these...which is what I had the space for. The artwork lives on. Pinball Horror??? You decide.

That’s amazing! LOVE THOSE!

#1763 5 years ago
Quoted from Dayhuff:

Nope. It was all either a electric jig saw to get the most of it cut off and in the tight corners and detailed areas it was a little hand powered scroll saw. Each one takes about a hour depending on the detailing involved. I'm bringing a Secret Service cabinet side to the Ohio show that would be prefect for this if anyone wants to make there own.
John

Just a single side? I have a secret service head and playfield if anyone wants to build their own :b

Follow up for forceflow and gdonovan
I'm a new member, never even looked inside a pinball machine before this week. I just made an account to read up on my brand new Trade Winds pinball machine I bought off LetGo. It was the same one you guys were laughing at back in 2017, in this thread.
The photo posted is from the day the seller bought it. The "crack-house" people mentioned was an abandoned clubhouse owned by an elderly man who bought the machine brand new in 1962. About 20 years ago this man had to be put in a nursing home, where he lived for 15 years (maintaining the property taxes and even electricity for his clubhouse the whole time) until his death, when the gentleman I purchased it from bought the machine from the deceased man's family. He brought it home, his wife didn't want it in the house, and so he put it in storage in a community garage and never looked at it again.
He mentioned in 2017 that he had never turned the machine on, and had no idea its condition. The photos on the posting had the final score the original owner ever got, 739.
The score that was on the machine when I brought it home and plugged it in for the first time was the same 739. The seller never plugged it in, in all the years he had it.
Here's a video of it being plugged in for the first time in at least 20 years:

The ball shooter was rusted shut and wouldn't shoot the ball, but everything else seems to be in working order. I just wanted to give a little bit of perspective on this machine, even thought I know it likely isn't even remembered by anyone here.
EDIT: It still has the original schematics and instruction manual, and all of the little tickets/tags for the display cards on pricing, plays, etc.

Oh shoot!! You bought that? I had no idea it’s been listed for almost 3 years! I was talking to that guy in February and I had negotiated a deal but I was unable to make the time to go pick it up. I figured it would be a decent game since it looked pretty untouched aside from being in a disgusting garage setting.
I’m so surprised it had everything with it and I’m kicking myself for not setting aside the time to go make the trip.

Congrats on the pickup, and congrats that it was actually in working condition, what a score! Backglass is ruined but otherwise that’s great pickup, and Trade Winds is an interesting EM in my opinion.

How many pins in total?
That’s depressing...
now for the obligatory, “It’s not too late, you can save them!! Restore it!!!” Just to annoy some folks :b

I see Flash, Meteor and Firepower? But I’m pretty sure there are a few others also. Meteor looks to be the only salvageable game. At least there are some great parts to be harvested, always good when you can, at the very least, use the guts to save other machines.

Quoted from Marvin:

Driving to close and not paying attention.

She was, I hope you’re not implying I was not paying attention because I was and I was slowing down as was traffic. You can’t come to a complete stop in 2 seconds, even the trooper and the car that was hit first said that she hit him without any attempt to stop. I hit my brakes but brakes can’t stop you as fast as stationary object does!

I didn’t take pictures of the first car she hit, but she hit him pretty squarely and I had swerved as best I could so it was mostly the passenger side that took the blow

#1848 4 years ago
Quoted from Darcy:

You could be in pain for a week or two. Will you replace your Subaru with another?
Hopefully the insurance inspectors will be able to prove you just hit the Honda. That you did not create the 3 vehicle pile up.

Well based on the story of the BWM driver who was hit by the Honda, he claims he was standing still and saw the whole thing happen and watched her hit him and saw that we didn’t have any chance to stop. Thankfully he told that to the troopers too. I wouldn’t have known since I couldn’t see around the huge Honda.

#1850 4 years ago
Quoted from JayDee:

Glad you’re ok after that. Good thing you went under the van and not had the engine block in your lap.

Actually happened to my friend I went to school with last year. Kid has a suped up WRX and the engine landed in his lap. Still in a wheelchair and probably won’t walk again.
Not gonna lie the thought briefly went through my mind when we crashed and I was amazed how the cabin wasn’t compromised at all by the impact

#1853 4 years ago
Quoted from Marvin:

Both were, if you didn't have time to stop you were to close.

Figured I’d find the idiot here. Have you ever been in rush hour traffic? You don’t get to have a large gap between the cars. Someone cuts in front of you.

#1855 4 years ago
Quoted from pacmanretro:

I always get flustered and upset with that....I dont handle traffic well always, but I try to give more space than I need to feel less stressed and more comfortable; but, it's inevitable that, every time you do that, someone fills in your "comfort buffer".
If you are in a smaller vehicle than the one in front of you and can't see past it well, trying to give more distance sometimes works.....sometimes doesn't.
As a person not on the scene, I don't have a right to judge. I would, however, certainly give you a benefit of the doubt. I mean, if a vehicle in front of you slows/brakes (showing tail lights) etc....you should be able to slow in time or else YES you are too close. But, if a vehicle in front of you smashes into something causing it to near instant stop with no warning, tail lights, etc.....well, I don't feel I could say it was something easily reactable (made up word?) to at all, potentially...
Not starting a super big debate. Just my feeling on it.
Like I said, doesn't even matter at this point; versus health of the people involved.

That’s completely understandable and my feelings as well. I was pretty upset as I was actually paying attention, of all the times I’ve been a less-than-attentive driver, I was most frustrated that I had been scanning traffic and just started slowing down accordingly and still hit this woman. When I got out I was confused by this until I saw the other car she had hit, who had moved further up the road about 50 yards or so.

I did state in my original post too, that she didn’t apply her brakes at all so there were no tail lights or any typical warning signs. The car in front of me was driving and then hit the car in front of her causing her to come to a complete stop without ever hitting her brakes.

Allow me to put us back on track here. Here's some shots from a recent warehouse raid in Wisconsin, there was a hole in the roof that had eaten through a couple of the floors. The building also got hit by lightning last year and was partially on fire. Lots of games covered in filth, bird shit, and some we're getting leaked on. Tons of boxes of EM parts. Found it! It was 6 months ago. But the video you posted is much higher quality! Thanks for that. Also it turns out the melting arcade machines from Sleighton had not been posted here before. I think it was in another thread about abandoned pinball machines and such. I will find my pictures from the school and post them! The machines have since completely disintegrated into the floor. It was kind of insane. A very surreal experience.

Quoted from PinJim:

I’m glad they removed the rabbit pic.

The hell did I miss?!

Quoted from Adrian:

Picked this up today $125 Aussie plenty of good parts. The guy I bought it off said he was going to restore it as he was in the printing business and it would be an easy job.To good to dismantle if I had the room I'd place it with my other machines as a conversation piece it's also an Australian delivered machine.[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Some folks had been pissing on me for saying “oh wow you can save that!” To some of the worst basket cases.
My opinion is that if the playfield is at least decent, a machine can be brought back, the playfield is truly the heart of a game. In this case that playfield looks like it suffered excessive exposure to the elements and has been absolutely ruined. These are common enough that I’d purchase a new one. The wood must be pitted, chipped and warped beyond repair. The rest of the game and cab looks like with dedication it can be an playable game.

So I picked this up to snag some parts, and after seeing it in person the first time, some laughs.
All I can say is wow. And WTH is this wired in lightswitch?
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]
Forgot to mention in its former life it was a GTB Grand Slam.....

The ol’ lightswitch on/off switch trick. I assume the other turns it to freeplay somehow. You see them a ton for some reason and they’re all stupid when the original switch was pretty damn simple to begin with

#2028 4 years ago
Quoted from LynnInDenver:

It could also be to switch the bells off.

I considered that, but with the location of the box in the picture, it seems like an odd place if you were trying to turn the chimes off. Also could a simple lightswitch actually work in that manner? I wasn’t sure if that would actually work or not.

Assume that anything you want or any closed operators have been picked clean about 10 years ago haha
I remember I was the same way when I joined 3 years ago. Nothing beats local contacts you make along the way.
Most longtime operators are also extremely miserable old men who never want to sell unless you pay NIB prices. Make friends with their wives just for future reference...

I can leave you a “hypothetical” situation (for legal reasons): if you find old rundown buildings that house old coin op you want, sometimes slipping the groundskeeper a Grant will allow you to do some impromptu “Junk Removal”

Quoted from cottonm4:

I never heard that term before. Interesting.
Google to the rescue:
Why is it called a Donk?
"Because of the exaggerated look gained from installing a lifted suspension and enormous wheels, donks are also known as "hi-risers" or "sky-scrapers." ... They were given this name because the "Impala" logo was referred to as a "donkey" by owners, or "donk" for short."
"A true “donk” car refers specifically to 1971-1976 full-size Chevrolet cars. The term “donk” actually comes from the Chevy Impala. ... To many, this jumping creature resembled a donkey, so when this particular Chevy model started gaining traction in the custom-car industry, people started referring to them as “donks.”

Hey, just doing my job, keeping you young and hip

Yes, I used legit industrial mold release. The mountains are intricate and thin, and when making a deep cavity mold like this, they tend to get stuck easier. So for funsies I powered it up last night. I don't have the speakers connected so I didn't test sound, but game goes into attract mode. DMD took a minute to come on. Has a single line out at the bottom, guessing broken lead on the glass. Coins up and does the ball search. So really aside from the bad cabinet this is just a shop job away from playing. Sad thing is its probably going to sit for a good year before I get to it.

Thank you for saving it! The Shadow deserves it!
Too many people parting out totally worthwhile games that just need serious TLC but otherwise they work.
Reminds me of the City Slicker I nabbed from ForceFlow a while back.
Thing fell off a truck of some sort and was in pieces. I plugged it all in and sure as shit it went into attracted mode and I was able to “play” it! Just the leaves and severely rotted rubbers kept getting in the way.

I’m actually almost done with that. It sat for way, way, WAY too long to be scanned, an outside party is apparently working on a VP table and needed scans of the playfield so I figured I’d help them out.

Quoted from Skarv:

Not too too bad, but really a testament to these machines. I got this AFM as a gift after our local bar changed hands. It was an old college hangout, but the bar had actually been in operation as a roadhouse since the 1850s. Old decrepit place and literally, the pin rested against the wall because there was a hole in the floor where the right rear leg would punch through.
I got to know the old owner, she was the widow of the guy that bought the place back in the 60s and she ran it like a little family business. She was always sitting at the end of the bar running the cash register. She did that until she was 85. After she retired, the place hobbled for a few years, and then when she passed, her kids sold the place. I had many times offered to buy the machine, but she refused saying it was part of the bar.
The new owner rebuilt the place from the bottom up, but given its california and space is at a premium, so he didn't want pinball. One of the last places in the area with a real pin. So he gave me the machine as he knew of my collection.
So here are a couple of pix of an old soldier that took quarters for around 25 years. Some hacks in there, and these target switches that I can't imagine why they repair dude didn't use the proper ones. But hey. It actually essentially worked. As you can see, the right martian target had broken away, and the wood gotten shredded, but what was interesting was that the void behind under the plastic had filled up with balls. There were about 4 so I guess the tech would just add balls to do a quick and dirty. But this worked as it would take the blow from shots to this target. Apologies that I didn't get pix of the balls in there. Anyway, the pops barely worked and you can see why. One of the brackets had fatigued and broken so it just made magnetic waves and the wafers had almost worn away! Anyway... Tribute to an old soldier. And tribute to AFM that even with most of the GI out, the dark playfield still got quarters. She's an old favorite so I'm going to fix her up and sell my already restored AFM.
And... it has this I would guess california warning about epilepsy. I had never seen.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

40 years ago, this little road side location in Maine closed its doors in the fall. It never reopened. I have been following this thread and went there today to snap a couple of pics. I was there 6 or 7 years ago. At that time there was still an unknown Bally playfield outdoors and 2 CC machines( motorcycle and race drivers). It was putt putt golf, batting cages and a small arcade.

That’s sad, but a cool photo op. Where in Maine is that? Drag a couple of scrap cabinets out there and MAKE some pinball horror pics!

Not pinball but arcade horror. Was shutting down the arcade tonight and noticed this weird blue dust on Target Terror...

This is why arcades are shitty now. Kids destroy EVERYTHING and have no respect.
Imagine how long this POS must have been sitting there doing this?

I tried it to see what happened, the screen goes wonky so apparently it causes some sort of signal disturbance, not entirely sure what the root cause is, but yeah, grinding down the gun and holster by hand just to make the game go funky and wavy.

Quoted from pinballslave:

I'm puzzled... is that threaded bar in the holster supposed to be there? If so, it looks like it's that that's worn the gun down... is the blue gun always used in a 1 player game?

No, as I said this was done YESTERDAY. This game has sat in this arcade for a decade without issue and never got ground down. The spacer was ripped off and the kid sat there doing this for several hours apparently. You can clearly see the wear is brand new.

Quoted from gdonovan:

Threads from a bolt like that will grind down plastic fast, either wrong part for job or there was a tube spacer around bolt originally.

It doesn’t grind it down in 12 hours, this isn’t the 90s were arcades were packed. As I said some kid came in and was beating the hell out of the game and taking the gun and jamming it up and down in the holster for hours. Mall security noticed and decided to do nothing as usual.

Quoted from pinballslave:

Just to get the record straight, you did not say that.

You also didn't say that

Uh yes I clearly did when I stated it. Reading would help.

Quoted from Isochronic_Frost:

Was shutting down the arcade tonight and noticed this weird blue dust on Target Terror...

Now with simple reading comprehension skills, you can see I wrote “tonight” meaning that time is when it occurred. Usually you don’t need an entire biography or schedule explaining this but here we are after your insistence at being so wrong and loud about it

Quoted from gdonovan:

If it had the correct fastener, it would not be ground down.
There is no way it was shipped from the factory with a piece of threaded rod with no protective covering on it. Bare threads will cut through anything in a short period of time.
There is clearly suppose to be a tube around the bolt.
I'm not excusing the kid, but the protective sleeve isn't there and it was there from the factory for a reason. [quoted image]

I’m not sure what part of “kids destroy everything” you guys are struggling so badly with? They rip/cut off the tubing. They break the brackets. Like lol open your games up to the public and get back to me about the condition.
This isn’t a hard concept, tubing was there, tubing was removed/broken off, the bolt thread was exposed, and that night I came in it was vandalized, it was not like that in the morning. The jam the guns into the holster and twist them sideways to shatter the plastic and break the holster. It’s happened more than once. Yes, plastic can bend mental, it shocked me too.

Quoted from Isochronic_Frost:

This is why arcades are shitty now. Kids destroy EVERYTHING and have no respect.
Imagine how long this POS must have been sitting there doing this?
...grinding down the gun and holster by hand just to make the game go funky and wavy.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Someone clearly explains why arcades go to shit, you guys SEE THE DAMAGE PEOPLE DO, and still act really rude about it? Guess what, people destroy things lol I can call the factory and get small tubing for a 13 year old game and they will tell me screw off.

I would be very concerned about accepting a game with the cabinet split at the corner. I agree. I generally replace those old school little leg brackets that look like a stick of gum with 2 holes in them with the modern version that spans both sides in each corner. Much sturdier I imagine.

Will they work on older games? I’ve got to replace all the brackets on my WCS I got from an operator would moved them with the legs on, and boy watching him “help me” move was horrifying and I had to tell him to stop.

Quoted from cottonm4:

This settles it for me. I have been thinking about hammering some nylon slide buttons to the long walls of my cabinets. It would stop this drag and rip-apart action. And in general, just make it easier to load a pin for transport.
I may be going to pick up a pin in near future. These buttons are going to be part of my travel tool box. Just pull the legs and knock one of these in on each corner. With the legs on, it will never be seen.
[quoted image]

Quoted from Riefepeters:

When I transport, I use four of these cardboard corners to protect the head and cab and use a lashing strap to strap the head down. These corners are then on the bottom of the cab and used as sleds going in and out of the vehicle.
[quoted image]

I use the tennis ball method now.
Take 3 or 4 tennis balls, put them under the front of the machine, push it forward and let it slide easily on top of the tennis balls! It works incredibly well and prevents snags. The cardboard corners method got hung up a lot in my car.
Best part is you leave them there, and just reverse the process taking the machine out! It is so smooth and simple you’re gonna be kicking yourself!

What on earth game is this?!

Quoted from pinballslave:

I asked the seller of the Home Run if he could send pics of the playfield and cabinet since I might be interested in buying it... eventually, after sending a pic of the playfield where it was impossible to even see the playfield due to reflections from, and dust on, the glass, which I had to point out to him, he eventually sent pics where the playfield is actually visible... I told him that my artistic skills are not sufficient to re-paint the missig artwork and he should sell it to a guy he said had already offered $500 for it... apparently this guy had not seen the playfield pics he sent me, but did know the condition because the seller told him "it needs refurbishment"... to the seller, that phrase is all that's needed to tell a potential buyer that there is virtually no paint left on the playfield!
I would love to see what happens if someone turns up to buy this without actually seeing these pics!![quoted image][quoted image]

Looks like the glass was off it and it had a severe rat infestation. In the very first picture inside the game, you can see a massive rat nest. 306B3D4A-5D50-4376-AD19-C003A1833111.jpeg306B3D4A-5D50-4376-AD19-C003A1833111.jpeg

#3709 2 years ago
Quoted from pinballslave:

I didn't notice that! So that dark red mound inside the cab, that's a rat's nest? Scary!
The guy still hasn't replied to my request for him to wipe the dirt off... I think I'll push him again, saying if the guy bought it for $500 then I understand... I'm gonna guess he'll say it's sold... at which point it would be cool if someone else from here can ask him if it's still for sale

The pink, fluffy mound is fiberglass insulation which mice/rats LOVE to make nests from. It’s extremely common in North America, because buildings are made from wood. Probably not so much in Europe due to their concrete and solid construction methods, so not as much need for the fiberglass insulation when the building is rock solid concrete!

Quoted from truemagoo102:

Totally agree- I believe every game can be salvaged, especially a paragon (and ironically I have a spare playfield for it) but the game was sold when I got there, for much more than $50.

The only time I have ever broke my belief was that old meteor I had with termites throughout the entire cabinet, backbox, light box and playfield.

There was no salvaging that for restoration, but the parts fixed 3 other meteors.

That’s the ONLY time I ever found a pin that couldn’t be saved!

I'm so over nasty animal infested games. Piss shit and disease.
My most recent barn find is extremely rare, but I feel digusting every time I work on it, spraying it to clean it and the piss smell comes back out.

Guy in one of the local arcade groupd posted pics of some really grungy places he had picked today and I spotted this picture of a Gameplan Captain Hook. He didn't take it home with him so i presume it's still there rotting away. Sadly no other pictures and the location is unknown
[quoted image]

As one of the rare Captain Hook owners, I can safely say that is Game Plan’s best machine behind Cyclopes. Gameplay is awesome, the strategy of having to manually reset the drop targets is very unique, and the sounds are just so damn cool!!!!

Please save it!!

I suppose I should be thankful that this one didn't get pitched into the dumpster. The story goes, the previous owner was aware the head folded down, but either didn't care, or was not inclined to remove the head bolts first.
the good news is he was ultimately successful in folding down the head.

At least it’s complete? Unlike an old post where they bought the body but the head was thrown in the dumpster for some bizarre reason!

Quoted from aamauzy:

You think one of the units with a net or cage over the "playfield" would be a good middle ground that? When I was a kid, most arcades had wised up and put cages over the playfields. I assumed at the time it was to prevent cheating ("oh no the kids may get 5 extra tickets!!") but as an adult I realize it may have been to stop ball hurling, more than anything.
As a former 7 or 8 year old boy who thought throwing darts directly into the drywall and ceiling tiles was WAY more fun than using the dart board, there's no way in hell I'd put a skeeball near anything valuable
Something like this:
[quoted image]

I run an arcade. Kids are always hurling the ball overhand at the metal net as hard as possible. It’s annoying as hell.

I caught a full grown woman (40s) doing it, I ran out and yelled at her and she just smiled sheepishly and shrugged.

People are assholes!

Not sure why so many down votes.
Students are able to take out loans in excess of tuition - they stay on campus until the final disbursement then stop showing up to classes. This was (probably still is) a very popular scam for gangs and the drug trade. Fortunately, it can only be done once and the moment you catch a felony the Stafford loans go bye bye.
Though not pinball horror, still horrible.

How is this a scam, aren’t you still obligated to pay the loan back? Maybe I missed something and I can let my sister know her loans are forgiven! Lol.

Personally, I went to work instead, found a job that pays for college, and have money in the bank and no loan debt. That’s why I am drowning in pinball

In the future if someone comes across an abandoned building with pins, feel free to tag me, I’ll make a point to go get them. It’s better than letting them rot like that... just sad. I’ve saved a few games from abandoned places, but those would have been the best so far!

They should revise the urbex code to "Take nothing but pictures and pinball machines. Leave nothing but footprints."

I make sure to contact the building/property owners to ensure it’s at least legal. Sometimes you get lucky. I know the Urbex code, but believe that sometimes preserving history (and kickass games) supersedes the code! Besides the only thing that will happen is vandals will make it worse

Agree. Hard to say. My son was playing it and his ball got stuck, the game went into ball search and that’s when it went dark. I powered off, came back later and powered on, heard a weird sound and smelled plastic melting maybe 15-20 seconds later. I saw an image online of another board with the exact chip melted. So maybe these boards have a vulnerability? My new board solved the problem. If it lasts 6 years again and I have to replace it I can live with that.

I believe that same thing happened to @jaymach1’s GotG.

You should have crowdsourced on Pinside to make the deal work! Although, 2017, prices were so much better, not a lot of meat for that deal. Sad.
Now that the world went nuts, we can all look back with, “WOW WTF!!!”

Hence, my motto of never ever turning stuff down and trying to make it work somehow. If I can’t use it, someone else can! Rather not regret a pin because 5 years later it finally became “worth it” to restore.

The translight inside Demo Man isn’t even melted. New cabs and plastics and endless hours of work, you’ll have a flipping game again. I’ve seen people posting in this website buying games like this and restoring them!

I wouldn’t, but it appears the damage must have been mostly limited to the cab and the heads.

#4929 8 months ago

Gameplan must have bought some of the shittiest batteries in the industry because they always seem to go nuclear when they leak!

Quoted from ForceFlow:

Boards are gently sprayed with an alkaline discharge solution and left to ferment in a historic wooden barn while placed under blue fringed tarps for 10 years and then harvested only by the most skilled Himalayan monks.

#4937 8 months ago
Quoted from ViperTim:

Imagine the humidity inside that storage for days or week after the fire has been extinguished with water.
I’m sure they are all FUBAR. Even if they look OK.
Plus fire smoke is corrosive, it’s shit to all metal parts and boards.

There have been dozens of threads of machines restored after fires and floods. It’s not impossible. It’s not even that uncommon! Example:

Quoted from Electronmagic:

A few years back I restored a machine that had been in a fire and was in the same shape as the demo man. Turned out good. Had to replace the translight, paint was bubbled on the top of the head. Afterwords when you opened the coin door there was still a hint of smoke smell but otherwise it was fine.
That demo man is desirable. Maybe the Jurassic Park too.

These are commercial machines made of wood and metal, if the parts are available, you can rebuild anything. Cheaper than a scratch build and you’d be surprised how well the cabinet protects the internals!

Quoted from DanMarino:

Wow. Bally Space Invaders looks terrible/no fun to play. Even if the artwork was all there, why bother playing it?

Quoted from SantaEatsCheese:

I can't stand space invaders, but if I were a kid in 1980 I would have absolutely dropped a quarter in in to try it out. The infinity mirror backglass with running lights, the awesome artwork that resulted in a lawsuit for ripping off Alien, the oversize package, the ability to win free games on that horseshoe shot... it has it all. Now... I'd only drop 1 quarter in it but it looks super cool. This is probably a top 10 game if you are looking for a pinball machine that just looks cool for your basement.
And yes... its not a pin the majority of players would find fun (should have played it at York!).

I’ve played it many times and just recently at York! It really does suck.
Most widebody pins suck, only Williams was able to get it right with the Super Pins.

Not long ago people used to be trying to give away Space Invaders. Crazy how even they are desirable now

It was a bad day, its on the path to recovery now though. Strap broke as I was going around a 90 deg corner.

I took me a bit to warm up to it but I really enjoy it now. We had one local and the more I played the more I enjoyed it.

I had 2 straps. The machine was standing on end cause i was hauling 2 machines and had dropped one off. So i had a strap over the top and another around the belly holding it forward.

Damn! That really sucks it still went flying and got ruined. Good luck on the rebuild!

Personally I told her to stop paying it completely because she’s in her 80s and realistically has between 1 day to 15 years left on this earth. The debt collector can try, but there’s literally nothing they can touch. Nothing is in her name anymore, so aside from her credit tanking, she has nothing to fear! Even the lawyer said so!
Why does a little old lady even need credit when she just tells me to buy her anything she wants anyway??

Pool tables:
[quoted image]

Went there not long after those pictures were taken. After they hit the Internet that place became a hotspot of activity.
Dumbasses destroying the place and filming music videos. It used to be beautiful!

Went back several times, took photos and it got worse and worse. Very, very sad. Nothing is left of them really. All the cabs were destroyed and rotten, mushy wood. Pool tables shared the same fate.

Can’t get into details too much, but don’t worry about saving those machines and useful parts. The Vidiot board and the MPU actually worked right off the bat. The rust and corrosion was gnarly, so it was stunning. The Tetris board worked too! The basement floods annually so those boards have been sitting in water through freeze/thaw cycles for over 15 years!

Ever since then I ignore the whole “be careful of handling boards they’re sensitive!”

The Sleighton boards beg to differ.

PS: It took a lot of legwork but after many calls, was able to speak to the rightful owners of the property and everything done legally and with permission. One day there’ll be a video and photos.

If anyone ever comes across abandoned pins or arcades in videos, feel free to @ me or reach out.

I’ll do my usual work to rescue them and will gladly cut you in on some pieces if successful and the legal owners oblige.

It’s a huge PITA, but I’ve been able to rescue machines like that a couple times. Usually they’re not salvageable, but many parts and pieces are. Using them to save other machines is important, rather than letting them waste away

#5303 3 months ago
Quoted from mc300baud:

some old pics from the mid-to-late 90's from an operator's farm/dumping ground, i believe on Whidbey Island north of Seattle. a group of collectors went up there and managed to salvage some of the games stored inside the barn and maybe a few of the parts on the cabs outside, but this was before values shot up and what they didn't save was slated for the dump.
i think these pictures came from Jonathan Morrison, who's still active in the area and collects both video games and pins. he and a number of other local guys had a ring of linked personal websites back around 2000, which helped inspire me when i was becoming more serious about collecting and repairing games. i believe i saved these to repost to KLOV once and never got around to deleting; now i'm glad i still have them.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

We do this with redemption games and cranes now. Just threw out 14 dumpsters worth of machines.
I implored my operator friend to sell them; but I didn’t have space nor did I have any use and he didn’t want to take the time to list them. It was a huge bummer. Next time we empty the warehouse I may try listing them on Pinside but I doubt there will be any interest.

Obviously not! He’s just joking, but I’ve seen crazy fixes like that too. Tore them right out of the wood!! Game was trashed, a lot of wood filler and hours of work later it’s good as new!
