Those urban abandonded pictures looks like those pins were staged for a legit horror film. Damn, does that fit the thread title to a "T".

Clever girl.
I'm in the process of stripping the playfield for a cleaning and waxing. All posts and rubbers getting changed out, as well as going all LED. The Pop bumpers will get broken down with new skirts added.
As far as the "Cliffy Protectors", don't those tear up the balls due to the raised metal edge?

The edge is so thin I don't think it would be a concern. And it is really not an impact type of collision where the ball is being bounced back. The ball is contacting the edge and rolling over the top.
However, you could always run a file along the edge the ball contacts and make it a "knife edge" to reduce the possibility of the ball being cut by the Cliffy.

Quoted from Coindork:I’ve owned a couple of EM pins that had a really big metal plate attached to the bottom of the cabinet. I guess people would try to kick in the bottom of the cab to remove the cash box.
Quoted from ForceFlow:Some early solid states have the plate installed too. Gottlieb system 1 games do.
The Magic Castle I just picked up had those plates bolted into the goddamn cabinet. And they were heavy as shit.
And they were nice enough to move the toggle switch and drill it through the metal for access. It looked like they had just ripped the toggle switch out, wooden block and all.
Luckily I had a few parts laying around, and cut a new block. All repaired now.

"Billy" really didn't have any tools or parts when he was maintaining this machine over the years. Points for keeping it working on location (I assume).

They came at very reasonable price points! Fire is wild. My Shadow was in a building that was on fire, the head was trashed, melted decals, soot all over the (working) boards. The cabinet and playfield were all fine!
Yes they were priced right and everyone was worth it for the parts under
I had a lah that was on fire at some point the head inside was charred and someone poked all the vent metal holes in rear
But the rest of game looked awesome

Wow. A Munsters destroyed and laying on its side. I used to live in Bonita Springs, about 20 mins from there.

To further prove that theory, I found a Revlon nail file in the coin box lol. Must have been used to clean switches. I wonder if this was just some random guy operating it in his bar BITD, not an established operator.
Looking at very crispy L1... must have been quite serious short circuit on the CPU board + oversized fuse.
Perhaps battery isolation diode got shorted and then the 5V went straight to batteries, exploding them and burning L1. Those Vartas have a best before date 2029, and I have never had any problems with Vartas leaking.

That’s acid corrosion. They always look like that once a bit of battery goodness hits the coating on the choke
That makes sense. The LM323 regulator has a current limit, and L1 is quite heavy wire so it burning due to overcurrent is unlikely. Anyway, still might be because of battery charging attempt due to shorted diode.
Maybe I have never had bad enough battery damage to affect L1. Hope I never will

Really shocked we aren’t seeing more people go pick these up after Hurricanes and storms to try and fix them like we see with old pins
Quoted from Isochronic_Frost:Really shocked we aren’t seeing more people go pick these up after Hurricanes and storms to try and fix them like we see with old pins
That was my initial thought too, then I quickly remembered how devastated those areas can get after storms like that. Anyone who was close enough to salvage any machines was probably helping rebuild homes, businesses and infrastructure.

Damn! Well, that dc voltage is stable anyhow? Surprised the inrush current didn’t fry something, or maybe it did.
Nice work mat. I have a similar one for a cz75b.
Quoted from PinJim:Damn! Well, that dc voltage is stable anyhow? Surprised the inrush current didn’t fry something, or maybe it did.
The hot rectifiers dry out the capacitor fast, so its ESR soon rises to a level where inrush current stays pretty low...
I once ran a simulation on the WPC 5 volt supply. With a 25000 uF cap at C5, the peak current at every half-cycle is about 25 amp, due to the cap charging only at peaks of cycles. With 10000 uF, much lower current and the ripple at 2 amp load was still well within LM323 regulators operating range.
